I have to agree with GreyAcumen, echo granite sounds much more at home in the caverns of the nether then in the wide open aether. but the idea itself sounds cool! (ooh maybe they could be used to hear the sound of creepers creeping so they wouldn't keep coming up form behind, unnoticed, and scaring the ***** out of me) ;D

I think it sounds more Aether-like myself, the mountains of the Aether would harbor Echoes. But, I guess it does fit in the Nether better.
I am trying to think up a mob for this, what do you think of it so far?
Catling
Mountain Cat Spirits. Catlings are transparent, blue floating cats with piercing yellow eyes and happy expressions. Catlings live in small groups, floating around casually, scavenging meat from Cockatrice and Swet kills. Although they are completely benevolent, Catlings greatly pity the living, and, thinking they are doing a favor, will doggedly try to kill the player. They usually do this by picking you up and dropping you, but they will also drop Medium Swets on you and sometimes push energy charged Floatsand at you if available. They can be 'damaged' by all weapons, but Gold is the most effective. They can go through blocks and open doors, so houses will be no use (they can't pass through pure Gold or Admintite though).
Opinions? How can I make it better? Should it be a pig? It's just that there are already pigs in the Aether...
Flying whales are fail. Flying pigs are recognizable. I prefer things that I can recognize. Zombies and skeletons are cliche and we love them more for that reason. If they were called dignorts or something weird like that, the game wouldn't be nearly as popular.
I'm going to post this over here, since the thread for the Aether Mod is filled with crap right now, and I haven't seen a serious discussion of any actual aspects of the mod for close to half a dozen pages now. It's only pats on teh back and petty bickering.

Bronze-Level Sentries are not directly hostile. Instead of literally damaging their enemies, the Sentries fire blue beams of light towards the player, pushing them back far away from the treasure the Sentries are protecting. These beams will "phase out" blocks that they hit, making them disappear for a short period of time. For the Sentries appearance we wanted them to feel like "Living Blocks of Ancient Stone". We are going to further improve the model though, adding several other details.
I notice that you specify that "Bronze level" sentries will not directly damage the player. I just want to maintain my stance that nothing in the Aether should directly damage the player. If there is a higher level of sentry, it should only add a "blind/daze" effect to hitting the player with its beam, which would cause a distortion+coloration effect over the player's vision, making it hard for them to see for a few seconds.
Also, higher level sentries should be able to permanently destroy blocks that the player places within the dungeon area.(except for select blocks, like mossy cobblestone, or crystal)

Remember, you need walls for things to echo. Aether is wide open, there's not enough physical structure to bounce an echo off properly. the Nether is perfect for echoes.

I could obviously be wrong here, but this feels like you took an idea that has nothing to do with the Aether, and then you tried to shoehorn it into fitting into the Aether. Sorry.

All levels of Sentries will do 0 direct damage towards the player. However, the Silver/Gold level sentries will use much more powerful methods of indirectly attacking the player. I'm thinking hallucinations which make you think you're dieing, blindness/daze (as you suggested), and even teleporting the player out of the dungeon (this is a rare ability used by the gold level Sentries, and can be dodged).
By the way, I took your advice of changing the texture to the Sky Moa variant, there's a new update on the mod thread where you can check them out.

Oh. Any advice?
I was trying to be creative. Whales have nothing to do with the Aether, so I was trying to get something creative like that. It did seem a bit far fetched after a few hours, but at the moment I thought it up and the moment I posted it, it seemed like a great idea.
I know this must seem really annoying, but I'm just a bit jealous of the people who CAN make models, while the people like me who have no talent for modeling or skinning, are just ignored. I guess my ideas aren't just ideas, but statements as well.
Also, I think either the Gold or Silver (probably the Silver) should be able to temporarily paralyze the player.

Whales actually have more grounding for mythological flying animals than you'd think. Zelda implements a wale with tiny wings and refers to it as a Wind Fish, and Fantasia 2000 has an entire scene where whales are swimming and then take to the night skies. I'm pretty sure it's connected to the way whales and other sea creatures glide through water, and the idea of applying that to the sky looks very dramatic. Cats tend to stalk more, which doesn't really lend well to evoking a sense of flight.
I do applaud the attempt to think outside of the norm though.

Lets face it, I have no real talent for modeling either. All of my stuff is either 2d, or stuff that I've photoshopped from existing 3d models. it's always going to be the deal. A picture is worth 1000 words, and when the internet's standard response is "tl;dr" being able to convey those 1000 words without using any words at all is just generally the only way to go. If you want to convey ideas, you need to invest the time into learning the skills needed to convey those ideas properly.
Also, I think either the Gold or Silver (probably the Silver) should be able to temporarily paralyze the player.
Sentries? That would really only work well if there was also a bunch of environmental hazards that could only kill the player if the player stopped moving, like if one sentry paralyzed you, and the other one broke some blocks in teh ceiling to let a bunch of send blocks collapse down onto your head.

The "think you're dying" one seems a little goofy, but if all you're talking about is knocking the player to their side and making the screen go red for a second or two then that wouldn't be too unreasonable. The teleportation is actually something I had suggested for the Chinese Style Dragons that Firehazurd had mocked up, and so you have my full approval on all of these being higher level sentry abilities.
I'm still not fully convinced on the idea of there being dungeons in the Aether, but I'm definitely feeling much less opposed to the idea than what I used to.

Would you like it if I just left this thread alone?
Also, I haven't tried modeling in ages, I might be able to make a simple model.
I have also got some inspiration: Hot Air Balloons and Dandylion Fluff. The only problem is I think in one of two ways:
* I think in scientifically accurate (or at least partially) fictional creatures, animals with actual adaptations that help them survive, not very mythical, they usually look like something from a SciFi thing.
* Usually though, I think in Anime-like Characters (most likely from playing too much Kirby), no mouth, no neck, no legs, just a round ball with huge eyes
The second one is the problem with my newer mob ideas.
I don't mind you posting ideas at all, but I'm going to point out any problems I see with the idea. I tend to be ruthless in my criticism even when I'm trying to be nice. Heck, even when I like the idea I still sometimes end up picking it apart. It's up to you if you want to subject your ideas to that.
Wouldn't it be a little more obtainable(not requiring a trip to the Nether), yet not 'easily' obtainable(requiring a lot of mining and good mining equipment) to make the Aether portal out of gold block?(gold bar as gold block, I couldn't find the emote);
[] [] [] []
Just thought about that.
By the way, I absolutely LOVE the idea of greek architecture as temples, possibly made of marble(If it was already said, disregard that.). There could also be pegasus mobs (or just use the pigasus mobs) and with a saddle that you would find in temples, you could use them as transport, and you could hitch them at your house, with a hitching post(something with the look of a fence).

No, that is what I want. Opinions and problems.

Gold has been suggested and rejected before. Using this method for Aether portals would actually make the Aether far LESS accessible than using Glowstone, and that's even without adding Glowstone Sand to the equation.

Did you actually read the description for Pigasus? You already can saddle and ride them. Why should they be found in temples? they're just part of the natural mobs that exist in the Aether.
I'm glad someone else thought of this idea before I did.
Well done on the idea! I love it.
Before I googled "Aether" (not knowing it was an actual word), I personally liked the name Elysium better for this kind of heavenly realm.
I also think differently about the portal.
I think the blocks should be laying down on the ground in a 2x2 position (not requiring as many as the obsidian, but also knowing it wouldn't be as easy to create a portal on the spot in the Nether, meaning players will have to actually destroy the glowstone in the Nether and recreate it elsewhere.)
The animation for going to Aether would be different than going to the Nether. As you stand in the portal, A beam of light will shoot upwards, then you will start to head upwards at an exponential speed. Then it will render the Aether.
I thought the Aether portal should be made out of a slightly stronger material. When I thought about the portal to Aether, I thought it should be made in that 2x2 laying down position out of Diamond blocks. But the idea of glowstone is cool and actually might be the best current kind of material considering it emits light, and like you said, it forces the player to access the Nether in order to get to the Aether. Progressing in stages.
Besides those, everything flows almost exactly how I envisioned it. :smile.gif:
I'm better at mobs I think, but I'm not sure if I should post them anyway, because they're not very good.
I'll spend a few days thinking about it, I'll try and think up a mob, possibly make a sketch of it too.
EDIT: the only reason I made it collapse when stepped on is that would give it a use for traps, otherwise it would be completely useless.
