Only that... I think the Aether should be above the clouds, so it's not visible in the Overworld, unless if you build up to the limit maybe of height? So maybe it can be a bit higher up in the clouds. Dunno, who like idea?
WOW. THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO EXPRESS HOW AWESOME THIS IS THIS IS DA BOOOOMB

It is going to be a heavenly realm, not heaven. Notch (as well as most people) want to steer away from the whole religion thing, which is why the Nether is the Nether.
OI!! why not make it so you do need a hot air baloon, airship, ect.
then when you get above 150 blocks(or some higher number than 128) everything gets cloudy(instead of purple and shakey)after a few seconds the same old "MINECRAFT IS LOADING" screen pops up and poof...your in the aether
love the sheepuffs ...LMFAO i wouldnt ever be able to resist punching them while they are flying!!!!!!!!!!!!

It does not exist in the physical world!!!! If you have to go into a portal to get there, then it isn't following the natural laws of physics and thus has to be another dimension that appears to be high over the Minecraft world.
Think of Heaven and Earth, Aether and the Overworld as a one-way mirror. In the Aether you look down at the overworld and you can see everything through the mirror, but in the Overworld you just look right through the Aether. It does not physically exist in that world so it cannot be seen. It doesn't matter if clouds are presumably blocking it or not.
Besides the concept that the sky blocks it is ridiculous since you can see the moon and the stars and enough of the sky that you couldn't possibly be obscuring huge pieces of floating land.
"It's not like Heaven." ORLY? That's like saying the Nether isn't like Hell. It resembles what people think of Hell and it was intended to be thought of that way. Notch isn't trying to incur religion in Minecraft, but he is taking notes from religion if you even consider depictions of hell true religion since it was completely fabricated by the Church to scare people into supporting them and not commit sins. The Heaven doesn't have a description either.
If the Nether was designed like Hell and the Aether is going to be the opposite of the Nether. What's the opposite of a Hellish design? That's right.! A heavenly design. Clouds have ALWAYS been associated with Heaven. It's been that way for thousands of years. The current Aether design will nearly fit a heavenly description.
If Notch desides to design the Aether like what is described in this thread, then it will resemble more like a Heaven, than if he cut out some of the frills included here.
Incresed Light: Haven't you heard of the "Walk into the light" cliche? Making the area brighter than day is directly relating the Aether to Heaven. The Nether is not abnormally dark and the Nether doesn't have a day/night cycle. Increased light is a stretch to consider it a true opposite to the Nether.
Increased peaceful mobs: An indirect relation to heaven. The Aether is intended to be less hostile than the other worlds. Well the Nether isn't more hostile in its current state. So it isn't an exact opposite unless you were comparing the concept of the Nether to Hell, which would indicate more hostility. So don't try to deny that you weren't thinking of the realms as such.
Falling into the Overworld: "Falling from heaven." Another cliche!!! This probably wouldn't work in Minecraft anyways. You wouldn't just fall 100s of meters and appear unscathed in a portal. If there was a portal there, then you wouldn't have sky below the floating islands, just a sea of portal blocks underneath and Notch would need to create a separate flat portal block just for the effect. (I'm aware that this isn't a completely supported feature of the Aether.) (Note: It would also make return portals to the Overworld pointless)
Water would also stop at a portal block and spread out in thin air above the portal block. It wouldn't work that way.
So my mirror hypothesis is the most plasible.
If Minecraft does have a religion, then the God would be Notch and the players would be the angels. I guess the trolls would be demons? This would have no direct connection to standard survival mode. It would make for some great dialogue and story elements in Adventure mode. Think if Notch(or herobrine) (Maybe fighting against each other in a great war?) appeared in the game possibly in one of the realms. Minecraft just reached a new depth of meaning right there and I think that alone would add 10 dollars to the game.
On a more unrelated note, if temples exist in the Aether then someone had to have gone to the Nether to make a portal to the Aether to build the temples. Unless you are trying to sell the Aether with its own history of beings advanced enough to construct buildings to protect standard built chests and place immovable sentries that fire lasers.
That reminds me of the Ancients in Stargate SG-1. They are an advanced alien civilization that created the stargate systems and I think they could see into the future. They left behind all sorts of starships and stuff. Stargates = portals in this case. In the series the Ancients were viewed to some of the many races as Gods and part of their religion.
Another thing that reminds me of is the Chozo from Metroid Prime. Samus Aran explores huge Chozo ruins that have immovable creatures that shoot lasers. They didn't build them as far as I know, but the concept is similar.
This idea is so cliched. Temples are designed to worship something and if there are temples in the Aether, what do you think they were worshipping? If the temples weren't build to worship, and were used to protect something, then why were they protecting it? Why would beings in a passive world have the need to include laser defense systems to protect their stuff? How can you say none of this had a religion associated with it. So what if there isn't a specific defined religion in the game, it is most definitely implied if Notch plans to make Minecraft sensible.
No association with the Nether?
If someone went into the Aether to build these things long ago, then they had to have gone to the Nether to get the portal material. This debunks the idea that you are the first person to discover the Nether. Well maybe you are the first "person" by definition, but still someone or something had to be there before you. This would associate the Nether with everything that was ever made in the Aether.
Side Logic: Anyone who didn't have an existing religion would consider a Heaven/Hell like experience if they discovered the Nether/Aether. One is unpleaseant and barren and the other is abundant with food, peaceful, and pristine. Considering that these two realms have opposing features anyone just coming upon them would relate them to a religion. Our own society has proven this true.
If beings existed there, then one must assume they were advanced enough to create portals to the Overworld. This is the start of a religion right there. The beings of the Aether came to the Overworld to jumpstart the intelligent life in the Overworld. Try to explain to me how a race capable of sentries didn't figure out how to get a portal to work? I mean they had to explain why their land masses are floating to begin with? Do we even have an explanation of that? I think that is another reference to Heaven and more reason the Minecraft lore would be deeply trodden in a religious like beginning.
Any beings entering this world would need to explain a lot of impossible things. Unexplanable things are easily contributed to a higher power. That is the most basic belief and considering the time period (Yes, I'm pressing the time period against this argument) it would be the most logical conclusion at that time.
It doesn't matter if the game states it or not. That is the most logical conclusion that someone would have and there is no reason not to believe that way.
My favorite stuff in all of this is the Hoverglass, Floatsand and Quicksoil. it just sounds so romantic in a Kid Iccarus fashion. I really hope something like this gets implemented into a later beta build or the complete game.
Hoverglass, it's what floatsand smelts into. Functions the same as Floatsand, except it's more fragile, and functions as a group when touching any other hoverglass.
It does not exist in the physical world!!!! Think of Heaven and Earth, Aether and the Overworld as a one-way mirror.
In the Aether you look down at the overworld and you can see everything through the mirror, but in the Overworld you just look right through the Aether. It does not physically exist in that world so it cannot be seen.

First off, Bravo Sir, this was an Excellent post, and a Joy to Read. Now, to the Philosiphy.

5.)Holy ****, it's like... An episode of Southpark... In Swedish... Or... It's like a... Hang on, Someone needs to call Variede. "MineCraft, The End Times." Holy ****, that would Work!
6.) Eh, Temples are always a nice touch in a Godly Realm. Cliche, perhaps, but good all the same.
7.) I have voiced my opposition to the "Hell's Gold" portal for a while now, and I think it creates a good deal of problems. I think the Temples could have been placed there by a Heavenly Entity, so you are the First Mortal in the Realm. That's pretty Nice.
8.) This is where I doubt you. You cannot assert that your conclusion is the "One true Way". You must allow for the fact that are inferior and superior Theories, Philosiphies, and Beliefs. Now, I will put this Statement up to pure ignorance, and not forceful arrogance. Please do not make a broad, over-reaching statement of this fashion again, as I would be Irate.

I beleive the aether, if made, should have its own block types just like the nether, for example, instead of dirt being abundant, dirt is only in little oasis under tree generation and water generation, while the actual islands in the sky are made of a cloud like material. The catch to the aether should be there is no lava at all. It makes sense because it rains on earth... it doesn't fire unless a volcano goes off. Pigs with golden wings... Brilliant. Things in heaven should include, all blocks emit some sort of "glow" on them. Heaven should have easy to mine ore inside cloud like blocks, making it very different from the norm, but, should also not be able to make a portal to hell directly from heaven. For every 8 chunks in aether, it should be the equivalent to one chunk on earth.
Hi everyone :smile.gif:
I'm sorry if this idea was already suggested but i would like to show my idea.
as at nether we have Glowstones that make light while it dark in the nether, which apear at the top of the nether,
why dont make Duskstones that make shadow while it's light in the aether, which apear at the bottom of the aether, bottom of each floating islands, beside the darkwoods.
here is a picture:
please tell me what you're thinking. it will look just like glowstones but with dark blue shades.
It will also act like glowstone, each duskstone drop 1 duskstone dust, and 9 duskstones at crafting table will produce back one duskstone.
it will do the same affect as the darkwood but more darkness(like torch do 14 levels of light and glowstone does 15, darkwood will do 14 levels or darkness(or more) and duskstone will do 15(or more) levels of darkness).
thanks for reading,
Shaked =)
