just like the poll option says, i really like the sky islands idea, (and anti-nether to an extent) but i feel you have gone in the wrong direction. all the new types of blocks and items and mobs is just overcomplicated to me, and i can't see how it develops the gameplay. i think you should keep it simple.
Like the quote from Notch says, Nether needs developed or it'll be boring. Same for the Aether. Every one of the blocks in the list has unique features that will make new types of structures and features possible for building, while at the same time being a possible threat to the player when found naturally in the Aether. It develops the gameplay by actually HAVING gameplay, and not just idly wandering around from island to island.
Aether is skylands, accept to get there you have to craft a glowstone staircase and put it above the clouds. This would solve the "should it be a portal or be above the level" argument, by being a portal that only works above the level!
I don't see how that would solve anything. The problem is that it SHOULDN'T be physically above the overworld. Also, needing to build above the cloud layer would be restrictive, you don't need to build the Nether Portal at Bedrock Layer.
I like the new pigasaus and sheepuff mobs and mabey the whale one too, but thats it! the others seem annoying and pointless to me.
Their point is to be a threat, so that traveling around in the Aether isn't just a matter of holding the Sneak button to never die. Hence why you find them annoying.
I like the day and night thing, but it wouldn't be fun to have to shelter from the sunlight every day, and it's always night in the nether, so why not make it constant day?
It's not always night in Nether. It's neither day nor night. And why would you need to take shelter during the Daey cycle? It's just hard to see. It doesn't damage you or anything. (unless you're standing under crystal blocks, but it's not like those will try to track you down.
there should only be 2 new blocks. Aether sand (which should be called cloud block) and gale block. Aether sand should only move sideways 5 blocks or so, or it would become incredibly annoying, especially if you were standing on it and it was floating away. Also Aether sand should not be triggered, instead gale blocks should be triggered and will push sand in ANY direction 5 blocks per gale block. and thats all Aether needs! the amount of features in this post is about equal to the amount the nether has, what you guys have come up with justifies a whole new game mode!
That would be rather silly. The Nether isn't going to stay dull, why should the Aether stay dull, when the Nether is going to need developed before developing the Aether?
However enjoyable this debate is, does it actually have anything to offer or detract from what we were originally talking about? I.E. A new realm that has floating stuff and is very VERY bright?
If nothing more can be refined then carry on in your quest for entertaining philisophical banter.
I'm sure it could be... But I enjoy debate more.
If I bribe you with a concept, may I be allowed to continue my Philisophical bantering?
Concept: Crystal Torches:
Same effect as a regular torch, but a glimmering crystal effect instead of the .
However, ATTRACTS Zephyrs, and possibly Aerwhales.
I believe I already posted an idea for Crystal Torches a long time ago:

Another idea. This idea is useless at the moment, but wouldn't be once Notch adds in the whole Lantern aspect.
Crystal Torches:
(Possible design)
[] []
= Diamond = Crystal
The way it would work, is that the Crystal Torch emits no light on it's own, but when placed in Sun light (Day or Daey), not Torch or Lightstone light, Sunlight, it would absorb the light, with the Crystal on top changing colour depending on how much it has, with it being white when it has none, and a bright blue when at full. The light would be used when in an area below a certain amount of light, with the amount it uses depending on when it was charged (Day or Daey) and for how long.
The Crystal Torch would be able to absorb slightly lower than Daey light level of light, with the range the light reaching about double that of a torch when at this level. To reach this level, the Torch would have to lay in the Sunlight during day time for the entire day, but if you don't pick it up by night fall, it would use release the light, wasting it if you wanted to use it for cave exploration. However, if the torch was placed in Daey light, it would take half the time to reach it, however, leaving it in Daey light for the whole day will burn it out, making it unusable, and a waist of resources. If kept in the light for a little less than a full Daey, it will still be at what you'd have had at half. This makes it quicker to charge it in daeylight, but far more dangerous of losing the torch. If the Torch is fully charged, then placed in Daylight for another day, it will break it as if it was in a full Daey cycle.
A fully charged Crystal Torch would last for a full day/night/Daey, with the level of light slowly dropping, until it reaches Daylight levels, a which time the light and range will go down. The light it makes is not coloured, it is pure sunlight. Obviously when in your inventory, it does not use up it's sunlight, only when placed in dark enough areas. The light it makes (although sunlight) will not harm mobs, but when the light is Day level or higher, they will not enter the light of the can help it.
EDIT:They are stackable, but not to 64, to something lower like 35 or something.
EDIT2: It could also make sense if they could emit any light that hits them when they are out or are lower than that light, but they would not retain the light, the would just produce the same amount of light hitting them, it wouldn't help you much, but it would still help you a little, and make it so they aren't totally useless when they run out and you're stuck in a cave, just make sure to bring Flint and Steel, and some real torches along with them.
These Crystal-infused stairs will become a great timesaver in your unbelievably oversized Castle, as they can speedily push you upward in the direction of the Stair! And yes, they are still considered stairs, even though they look like a ramp! Build a fancy new Mob trap, make that secret Base just a little more accessible, (Wheelchair access.) and even Build a conveyor belt of Pigs! All with the new, Crystal Staair!
I know we are killing Notch with all these ideas but then again how hard can it be?
Killing Notch with ideas implies he does anything more than occasionally skim, if that.

"Survival" is a film/literature/video game genre about survival and self-sufficiency in the wild.
"Survival of the fittest" is a phrase used to paraphrase natural selection.

I have not, and although the idea is, good, why Crystal? It'd make much more sense for them be made with Quicksoil.
I LOVE this idea, however(my two cents), it should be physically impossible to enter the original world (like how it works in the Nether). Instead, it should have the sky below it - with no visible sign of the original world. Falling just equals your doom after you passed 64 blocks from "sea level". There could also be a purple-ish sky above with stars and clouds, so it would be like the Aether is placed in the heavens.
It would be nice if other celestial phenoms could be seen from the Aether as well.
The concept of heaven/hell dimensions are just boring. To me, the Aether is just thematically flat; it's the sky, basically. I'd rather Notch just implement floating islands in the actual Minecraft world and then make those islands have unique parts to them, like the drifting sand idea you guys came up with, rather than making it some kind of isolated plane. The Nether is an alternate plane only because it's primary purpose is to be a quicktravel system, and unless the Aether has some practical quantity in regard to the primary world that necessitates such a schism, it's rather poor game design for a sandbox game to throw in a layer of disattached content for no reason. Design-wise, there are only two reasons that would make alternate dimensions a smart idea; either it allows unequal manipulation of the primary world (such as the Nether's quicktravel capabilities), or it represents a sharp dichotomy in regular gameplay and demands its own ruleset (such as an indestructible Adventure-mode world or a "liquid world" or something of the sort). The Aether does neither of these, and so it is a silly idea to make it its own plane.
So, to me, what can be garnered from this thread is that there should be more vertical content in the game. Floating islands, air mobs, unique biomes above only certain height levels, etc. Right now the game has you go down a whole lot -- I think it would be remarkably interesting if it required you to go up as well.
I recently got an idea for a different way to get to he aether once I saw that beds were added. I noticed that we're trying to stay away from all religious meanings, such as the whole heaven/hell dynamic and etc. Well, too me the Aether seems like a pretty dreamy world. Floating Islands, Mythical creatures, strange obj- you already know where I'm going with this.
Yes, basically treat the aether as a dream world that you access through a bed. Perhaps make it so that you craft a special bead with lightstone and that then takes you to the aether. It makes sense though. It's unlikely that you'd just die in the aether normally, and most things that try to kill, attempt to do so by making you fall. Haven't you ever fell in a dream? You wake up just before you hit the ground. Perhaps When you die the aether, you return to the real world, but lose everything you collected there, plus maybe a heart of health.
This would help get rid of the heaven/hell mentality, plus give a different means of accessing it instead of "magic-y portal thing." It also simplifies the problem of "what happens when you fall off" to simply, you wake up. Plus you don't have to worry about how it'll manage rendering a 2-d picture of the over-world quickly. You could still have the clouds and see space above and stuff like that, since those are commonly associated with dreams.
Also, when you appear in the aether, you would come out a lightstone portal that you can use to return to the real world without losing your stuff. Also, I feel that lightstone shouldn't break like glass in the aether so that the player doesn't get stranded there. For instance, in the nether you can always re use the obsidian you take out of the portal and light it with a ghast fireball. In the aether, perhaps lightstone should break like normal blocks do and be able to be replaced with a 1:1 ratio. The the portal would form automatically if its fixed.
= Lightstone = Bed
= (Golden Bed)
I don't know, it seems like a good idea to me, but then again, I'm writing this at 3AM and I tend to say pancakes a lot at this hour. Feel free to slap me with a piece of bacon and ignore me.

Now Featuring Something Quest! Also, quite a few Minecraft Creations.
A cannon is a creative idea for entry into the Aether. I think it might be a bit too comical. The lightstone gate is the best idea I've heard yet, but I love hearing new ideas.
It also sounds like a mario adventure world sorta thing but it would be better like a gate sorta thing that can only be made by glowstone
(sponge is glowstone block)
Everywhere needs to have a sensible light source. I don't care what time of day it is, if the light can't move through the blocks, it will be dark on the other side. If there is no light source, then there is no light. This is true for Minecraft.
Let's just think that Aether's blocks allows light to penetrate it without being transparent.
Golden Beds? pshhaw, Im banking on putting an aether portal right up again a nether portal.
floating in a sphere room made half obby and half glowstone.. in a swirly pattern, im totally into the whole magic aspect of Nether/Aether Portal travel. Golden beds suck.

I don't like the idea of EVERY fall from the Aether being instant death, and falling back into the overworld would still make instant death a likelihood, but also potentially survivable if they land in water. Having a Portal at the bottom of the Aether allows people to have a "not physically connected" explanation for how they end up back in the overworld.

You probably missed the philisophical discussion I had with Fionnbharr, but the goal isn't to stay away from ALL religious meaning, but to stay away from religious meaning that ties the Aether to a specific religion, or specifically to religion. I actually LIKE the fact that it's possible for people to draw parallels to Heaven and Hell, but it can also be viewed just as a scifi "they're just different dimensions" since the portals effectively operate under the same mechanics.

There are people working on underwater travel as well, by the way.
As long as you don't shove your picture of the world down my throat, I'm fine with that
Although I'd like to think that the Aether is on the opposite side of the Nether. With the Overworld in between.
