The original name for the Aether was just "Ether" I suggested a long time ago that the name be changed to Aether. I had no idea what that word meant till someone posted a wiki link. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Aether was some sort of Greek heaven of some sort. I can't remember ANY of the details from the wiki, but it went hand-in-hand with this realm of floating islands/continants and general pleasantness.
You seem stuck on what the Aether LITERALLY means. We (they/he/to-whom-it-may-concern, I'm not sure I can use "we" but I feel invested in this idea too) just want to use the name for an idea that Chromee came up with near the end of October last year. I think a few days(hours?) after the Holloween update.
Now before you go off on some gung-ho "Aether means balance" thing again (oh yes, I've seen it several times now) so does Yin-Yang, so does Libra, so does a million other freakin' oddities of our world. We're NOT trying to disprove what Aether means, just applying it's name to something else.
Well, when I first saw this idea, I pretty much thought it sucked. Really hard. But I must admit, it has improved a great deal, and I am now pro-aether. Also, someone should make a trailer with this song:
If someone makes a (makeshift) texture pack, I could do it myself...
Yeah, that pretty much has absolutely nothing with the current concept of the Aether, but as long as you quit trying to correct people for referring to Nether and Aether as Hell and Heaven as if this was all somehow your idea, then I wont tell you that you can't continue thinking of it in your own excessively capitalized manner.
Simply because your current take on Aether is different, it does not Invalidate the mainstream Philosophical approach. The "Current Concept" as you put it is the one I have described earlier.
You also seem to be assuming that I am asserting that It was my Idea. I had made the assumption that you were using the "Current Concept" of Aether, as most of your Ideas seemed In-line with It. I did not anticipate you having a different concept of it.
Yet again, I'll bring this to your attention: (and I found my post this time!)

How about comparing the Aether to the definition of the word:
"the ancient Greek personification of the clear upper air of the sky" or "the upper pure, bright air"
Or even go by the etymology of Aether:
from aithein "to burn, shine" or from aither "upper air"
You may compare it to heaven, but I will compare it to this.
Though instead of heaven, referring to ether.

I once saw a chicken push a creeper off of a cliff. I never looked at chickens the same way ever again. That is of course until I needed feathers.
Pretty much exactly. Aether is open for interpretation, and just isn't going to specifically align itself with any specific philosophy, but leave itself open to draw on any applicable philosophies for inspiration, as long as they benefit the overall gameplay experience, and creative development of the idea.

That's actually my point. You are perfectly free to view the Aether as your own thing, but so are people who view Nether/Aether as a straight Hell/Heaven analogy.
You also seem to be assuming that I am asserting that It was my Idea. I had made the assumption that you were using the "Current Concept" of Aether, as most of your Ideas seemed In-line with It. I did not anticipate you having a different concept of it.
I didn't say that you were asserting it as your idea. I said that you were "correcting" other people as if it was your idea.
Note: I have often been critiscized for capitalization habits. If it Irks you, then I apolagize in advance, for every post I make from here on will most likely have the same affliction.
I don't mind. It was more of an observation that you felt those particular words warranted capitalization and noting my speculation about the importance with which you view those particular concepts.

One idea for aether. All the enemies you killin the last day or so should appear there with halos.
Halleluja!
Yeah, see, this is the type of thing that wont be getting included because it SPECIFICALLY ties down the concept Aether being "Heaven"

Oh Notch, is someone has a mob grinder in their save, they would be flooded with skeletons, spiders, and creepers the moment they leave the portal.
Actually, I'd be MORE likely to implement it just for this purpose, but no.
I shee. So you are trying not to align it to any one concept of Aether. Rather, you want everyone to cast their own inflection upon it.
This seems very Wise.
And as Glyph put it, The greek touch is tolerable, to say the least.
Now, on to Glyph's post. I unfortunatly cannot remember much of my studies, but I shall try.
"Aether is the force which unites and controlls all of the natural elements such as Earth, Wind, Fire, Water."
"Yin-Yang is the Two opposing forces of Dark and Light keeping each other in check. The two small dots within each of the symbolic 'koi' are also statements of the content of evil within light, and vice versa."
I cannot say anything for Libra, but there Is a distinct difference here.
Aether is a natural Element, and many religions which did not accept a light/dark system could still use Aether as a means of conceptualizing their Haven.
EDIT: Also, Libra is a theoretical designation based upon time of birth, less a philosophical concept then an astrological one.

Libra is "The Scales of Balance". And that's all I know of the Zodiac signs.
wait. The normal block of the nether is netherrack. Netherack means "heckish suffering" roughly. So instead of aether rock aether is the opposite of nether. so, instead of netherrack, aetherchara. That means "aether joy" in greek because aether is the opposite of nether.

No. Aether is opposite of Nether, AetheROCK is not "opposite" of NetherRACK. Nor does it need to be. Fitting in with that type of logic, we'll also say that pressing the forward button should make the player walk backwards, since it makes you walk forwards in the nether. Or that we should make a 2x3 rectangle of glowstone and the portal blocks will form around the edges since the Nether portal you have to make the border and the portals appear inside.

That's the goal. I consider the primary feature of Minecraft to be how open it is to interpretation. Even though there are "magical" elements, they are those elements which also still have potential scientific (or at least scifi) explanations, so those who like magic and those who like the steampunk science can enjoy it. Similarly, Aether and Nether can be treated from the scifi stance as being simply different dimensions, philosophically, Aether and Nether can be viewed under your guidelines, but even then, it can also be fit into religious views of Heaven and Hell.
I'm actually Christian myself, so my personal take on the Aether/Nether relation is actually closer aligned to Heaven/Hell, but at the same time, I feel that saying "you can go wreak havoc in heaven" to be rather crass, so while I'll say that the Aether is HeavenLY and draw parallels to how the Aether and Nether are related compared to Heaven and Hell, but I wont set anything that establishes Aether as Heaven or Nether as Hell.
And as Glyph put it, The greek touch is tolerable, to say the least.
I rather like it myself. Mostly for the sense of ancient and abandoned, yet functional and aesthetic, ruins.

Actually, I think rather than yin-yang, the more accurate terminology would be Nirvana and Tao. Nirvana is the absence of all things(Nether), where Tao is suppose to be the balance(or path) of all things (Aether) at that point you can get into the idea that "only by becoming nothing can we become one with everything" line.
Yet the Nether is not the Absence of things, you must observe. Indeed, The "Void" is the absence of all things. Rather, the Nether is simply a selection a few very select elements. I.e, "Darkness/Evil" and "Fire" and perhaps "Necros".
However, the Aether does meet the description of being a place where all is in Balance, I cannot dispute you there.
However enjoyable this debate is, does it actually have anything to offer or detract from what we were originally talking about? I.E. A new realm that has floating stuff and is very VERY bright?
If nothing more can be refined then carry on in your quest for entertaining philisophical banter.

Those'd probably work better as a portable (or even more economical) representation of Light extension.

So really useful to spelunk but horrible to light your house with (atleast the outside).
