A few quick points, but first let me say this. This idea is needed, and the ideas compiled here are mostly of a very high qaulity.
Now, to my Points.
-"Aether" is not the Opposite of the "Nether", such as "Light" is the Opposite of "Dark". Rather, Aether is a Mediating element drawing energy from the natural spheres, and from the havenly elements aswell. Aether is extremely difficult to define in standard terms, however it is by no means a polar opposite. I can understand how the monkier "Aether" would catch on however, and Am not willing to argue this for long.
-"Through the fires of hell ye shall travel, o' worried soul, before ye at last reach the land to which ye were promised" ~Unknown. I appreciate the Lightstone element here, but I believe that there should also be a way to ascend to the Aether through more Natural means, without the evil taints of glowstone, the hell's gold.
-Floating Islands, This is what should be any form of Heaven, Aether, or any such Over-realm.
-As far as Ice is considered, The Aether seems to elevated significantly. This would make for two factors: A very high chance for the "quickfreeze", the high altitude making things very cold. It also allows any light to have a significant impact over time, quickly heating things. Due to this, The "Daey" Idea is plausible by any means.
-Aetherock, it is Deceptive in Nature. Such would be more a trick of the Nether than any other, but the Golden boots allows for the Chosen to walk unharmed. This makes for a very nice effect.
-Galestone, provides an interesting element. Makes the islands seem almost capable of being man-made... "Castle in the Sky". Wonderful movie.
-Floatsand, God knows what purple sand is doing flying every which way, but it probably won't subtract much.
-Quicksoil, Good god, you really are trying to parallel this with the Nether in every concievable way, aren't you? *Sigh* Well, again, it probably won't subtract much.
-Crystal, Interesting. Definetly adds to the "Aether" effect.
-Darkwood, Allright, several issues with this one. The Nether is a place of fire and brimstone, truly a sort of hell. What are trees doing here, therefore? Rather, Trees belong much more to the Aether element and to any sort of Havenly realm. Also, It makes things cold? Yet the Nether is very hot? I find issue with this. I suggest re-coloring it, and placing it in the Aether.
-Mobs in General, All done in the fashion of the Roman Bathes. Not a bad idea, quiet a nice effect. Temples done in the same style would greatly add to the effect.
-Aerwhale, Quite a nice Idea, all said and done. Whales fit well with the Peaceful, slow Aspects of the Aether. However, it should be pronounced "A-er-whale", due to the Ae.
-Zephyr, As a Fauna incarnation of Wind spirits, relativly simple. However, I think they should be passive, and at most curious about players, not malicious by any means, and fleeing quickly when attacked.
-Swet, I am opposed to the Idea of anything malicious in the Aether, as Aether is a more-or-less innatly peaceful element. Perhaps if replaced by some sort of water-dwelling Faery, which would be territorial about it's lake, and would push the player away by jets of water. Could fufill the same sort of purpose.
-Phygs, Hmmm, actually quite a nice parallel to the Nether-pigs. I think if their color was altered slightly, perhaps a slightly light-blue tone or aquamarine as the other mobs, and it was able to remain aloft for extended periods of time, then it would be a *very* nice addition.
-Sheepuffs, Again in the Roman theme, would make a nice mob for passive effect. I suggest they also only puff up when jumping between islands, so there are not these spammish blimps of sheep rocketing up every 12 seconds.
-Sentries, Placed well within large scenic temples, as statues or the like, would make Temples both challenging and aesthetically wonderful.
-Airships. Again, Castle in the Sky. A very good idea, all said and done. I can see people going very far with that.
-Gliders, A crude but effective way to traverse to lower islands. Perhaps a rope that can be thrown to reach higher islands.
And that's it for my Critique in Brief. I will not even bother to make Suggestions, as I have already typed so much.
-I forgot to express my profound Gratitude for everyone who has contributed to this Idea, as this is the sort of thing that Only Minecraft could capture. I have high Hopes, and I am confident that through much development, Minecrafters could succeed in creating this Elysium.
I appreciate the Lightstone element here, but I believe that there should also be a way to ascend to the Aether through more Natural means, without the evil taints of glowstone, the hell's gold.
First off, I love that reference.
Second, Thank you sir. You've successfully put out a compelling arguement against several points made. At least by my standards. Which, in turn, will make everyone else start thinking over the whole topic all over again.
I can't offer any other input to help this idea. I'm hoping everyone chews over your post.

Glowstone is one of the primary, and perhaps only, reasons to venture into the Nether at all. It is therefore the allure of Hell. Quite simple, really. >.>
I try to make in-depth posts when I can, and to contribute to ideas as Wonderful as this one.
Well, I'm going to go off and get some more Tea, for I'm going to attempt a "Suggestions" post of similar qaulity.
After a few minutes of Research, I came up with this little Gem. It describes in light detail the premise of Aether.
"You must feel the force around you;
here, between you, me, the tree, the rock, everywhere."
-Yoda, "Star Wars"
The Force...Prana...Aether...they all refer to the same thing: The
Vital Energy, The Vital Life Force, the Divine Essence which holds
everything together and provides the Spiritual Energy, which we
call Life, to all things in all realms and dimensions.
Prana is the Ancient Sanskrit term used to refer to this Vital
Spiritual Energy. Later on, Prana became known as Aether by the
Alchemists, Metaphysicians and Astrologers. Aether is the term
that is normally used to describe this Vital Life Force today. The
Jedi Masters of the Star Wars episodes provided a much Simpler
term to this Vital Spiritual Energy: they Simply referred to it as
The Force.
Whether we call this Vital Spiritual Energy Prana, The Force, or
Aether, these names all refer to the same thing. Aether is the
Essential Spiritual Energy which enables life, in all of its forms, to
exist, function and interact in Harmony within all realms and
dimensions. Aether is the "Spiritual Breath" of Divinity. Aether is
the Divine Life Force that exists within the Air that we breathe.
Aether is the Divine Life Force that holds the heavens together and
allows the stars, planets, solar systems, galaxies, and universes, to
co-exist and interact in Harmony with each other.
Aether is the Sacred and Secret Fifth-Element that was held in such
high-esteem by Pythagoras and his students. The Pythagoreans
understood that Aether was the invisible Life Force that enabled the
Four Elements of Creation (Fire, Earth, Air and Water) to function,
interact and create. The Pythagoreans honored Aether by embracing
the Five-Pointed-Star as their most sacred Symbol. The five points
of the Five-Pointed-Star represented Fire, Earth, Air, Water, and
Aether. The Fifth Point of the Star, along with the number Five,
represented the Spiritual Breath of Divinity: Aether.
On our planet, oxygen is necessary for human and animal life to
survive. Each time we inhale we ingest the element of oxygen into
ourselves. But, how often do we consider the Universal Life Force,
the Spiritual Essence, which is contained within the element of
oxygen that we are inhaling?
Oxygen is simply an earthly element. However, within this earthly
element of oxygen is contained the Vital Spiritual Life Force of
Aether. And it is this Spiritual Essence of Aether, contained within
the physical element of oxygen, which gives us life and enables us
to function and interact here in the material realm. With each
breath we take, we are inhaling both oxygen and Aether.
And as Aether is the Universal Spiritual Life Force that connects
and flows through all things, it is through Aether that we, too, are
part of, and are able to interact with, all things in all realms and
dimensions...including Divinity!
I think that should help clear up a few misconceptions.
EDIT: Going to go play around with a few temple ideas in Classic mode, If I can find it.

A classic example of why you shouldn't ingest hallucinogens before attempting philosophy.
Tsk Tsk Tsk. If you are not a "Believer" so to speak, in Aether as an element, that is your place. However, do not critiscize the Theory without cause, as it has been accepted by *Many* major Religions, most Philisophical groups, Etc. For a very long time.
Such behavior could easily be mistaken for Trolling. If you want to have a Philosophical Discussion, then that's another matter.
Not trying to start a religious/philosophical discussion, and I'm sorry if I offended you. (and anyone else)
I feel that I am getting off-topic, though I feel the need to apologize for that one.
You seemed to be mocking the Theory of Aether, and I took offense. Now, I suppose you were only saying it in Jest, and I can remove this from your porch.
I love the idea of Floatsand-- if only they could hurt players. I can just imagine huge battles of Floatsand wars in SMP. Haha. Maybe you could make it so that when Floatsand was in a dispenser, it shot out at it's same speed, but would injure mobs like arrows. Would there be biomes in Aether?

Most of your Ideas I dismissed as "For teh Lolz". Then I saw your Biomes Idea. Now I Deeply Respect you.
Hmmm... Glacial Islands, Forest Islands, Waterfall islands that drop off the edges, Etc. I will elaborate upon this.

This is a .mine folder, it can only be opened in MC classic.
since using glowstone is "tainted" why not just be able to smelt out the "taint"?
Also ,your idea is amazing,i hope that more is implemented into the nether first. And if the aether is basically a falling hazard i believe a form of "anti gravity" should be rule here. Now to the post about there being temples to find, that shouldve been the case in the nether,i always go exploring and wish that just ONCE i would find some sort of "pre" made structure to explore that was not made by me !!!

You don't understand, do you? Pgup a little, I explained briefly why the Glowstone is tainted.
You don't understand, do you? Pgup a little, I explained briefly why the Glowstone is tainted.
I don't believe that the Nether is evil. It his a much more dangerous place then the overworld, but it isn't the land of suffering that we see when we envision hell. Just as the Aether wouldn't be the perfect peaceful place with singing angels and eternal bliss we envision Heaven.
Both worlds are places where we have to scrape and scavenge to survive, where things are still trying to kill us and we must tame the land to surpass it.
In the Nether, it is filled with a very dangerous and aggressive predator, the Ghast. However, it is also populated with the neutral tribal Pigmen-Zombies, which have on many occasions, took a bullet and saved me from a Ghast fireball.
The monsters in the Aether won't directly attack us, but they would still try and kill us, even passively.

This.
Also, Fionnbharr1, although I'm sure you probably realize this, the point of the portal being Glowstone is so that you must first traverse the difficulties of the Nether in order to rise to the Aether (Or something along this line). A purgatory, for you those of you who may be Catholic out there.
The Nether should be associated with evil. I think melted pig creatures are evil. If they weren't than the zombie mob should look more like the zombie pigman. However Notch's vision of a Hellish area is very lacking. He needs to triple the amount of lava, add new lava types, and new hellish versions of the normal world hostile mobs.
The Aether on the other hand should just be as hostile as any world. If Notch were to add new hostile flying mobs that don't look like flying blocks with faces on them, it would be here. He got pressured into confirming dragon mobs. Well they can be seen here and possibly a different version in the Nether.
The Aether would be dangerous with floating chunks of land everywhere. It's probably been mentioned before, but I suggest that a single larger pieces of floating land, be under many smaller floating chunks and as new chunks get created more variations of larger floating lands can appear.
Below the aether could be a cloud level. When falling into such a level it needs to kill you. Maybe the clouds down there are poisonous and kill you as you're falling? Once you're dead there would need to be some tricky camera changes to make it look realistic.
I think that Notch should use an infinite falling simulation. So when it finally kills you, it shows you continually falling in the background like it does in the void. The void should also be set up to kill you in this way. If Notch did this, it would cure both issues. Notch could leave the void down there and the void would kill you once you fall into it. However Notch would NEED to fix th lagpits opening up into the void.

Also, I did not declare the Nether directly Evil, instead I described it as place of "fire and brimstone" which would imply that it is very dangerous, and not at all pleasent. Yet we venture into it anyway in pursuit of, mainly, Glowstone. "Hell's Gold" is merely a reference, or metaphor.

I'm sorry, but I think a little bit of my point is being missed with the placement of that article on Aether earlier. It is not a parallel to the Nether's traits. Aether is a unifying and controlling element working in harmony with all the natural elements. Therefore, I believe it should be possible to achieve the Aether through natural means.

The Nether is not Distinctly Evil, as has been stated by many here before.
Other then that, your concept of the Aether sounds rather plausible.
He really needs to add this. I mean this topic has more views than the Read this before posting thread stickied at the top of the page. That's saying something.
He really needs to add this. I mean this topic has more views than the Read this before posting thread stickied at the top of the page. That's saying something.
That people just Don't read the Godamn Instructions?
Ahem, just to point this out, the feature implemented to make sure portals couldn't be created in the Aether oddly enough IS the loophole in which it could be done. All you would need is a mold built, and then pour the lava in. Presto, instant obsidian portal. Just turn the lava into cobblestone instead and that problem is solved.
Other than that, the idea is solid. I really like the idea of an opposite 'cheery' realm that contrasts the disturbing nature of the Nether, which now accounts fo 50% of my nightmares. Notch, add this now.
I must applaud you for catching that loophole, Yet I have an objection.
The Aether is not Cheery, if you bother to read that bit of Philosiphy I posted earlier.
