By using it as the fuel in a furnace, it will instead CHILL the material being "smelted"
This can be used with buckets of lava to create Obsidian (just like the Cake recipe, the empty buckets will be left in the smelting input grid) This will allow Obsidian to be gathered into the inventory without needing a Pickaxe to Mine it. This will not only make building portals easier (such as gathering obsidian for building portals without needing to leave the Nether) but will also provide alternate options for recipes to be proposed to craft things out of obsidian without ONLY being able to do it after getting a Diamond Pickaxe.
This can be used with buckets of water to create Snow blocks (just like the Cake recipe, the empty buckets will be left in the smelting input grid) This will allow Snow to be gathered without needing to specifically find a "winter" biome.
Also allows the potential for new food recipes like ICE CREAM.
Possibility to "chill" slime balls dropped from slimes to CREATE friendly slime mobs (jello needs to chill after mixing it in order to set) Also, don't forget the ability to dye the color of these friendly slimes to suit your tastes.
OMFG! if i knew where i could support this in my signiture i would! i lov this idea! a new world of floating islands and sheepclouds? cool! mimic blocks, floatsand, airships. wow! i'm overwhelmed! notch has to add this! has to, has to, has to!
:'( Love the idea! Check out my cloud ideas down below.
I ALREADY have clouds set to use buckets to mine. When they're solid, you have to first step on them or break them to turn them into insubstantial clouds, and when they turn insubstantial, you can scoop them up in a bucket like water. That's why the solid clouds are called Cold Cloud. And the idea that iron BLOCK boots would help you stand on a cloud is ridiculous. I'd be more likely to go with GOLD block boots. It's already been discussed that gold boots would allow you to keep from falling through the insubstantial Aetherock, so it wouldn't be unreasonable to extend the same effect to the Insubstantial cold cloud as well.
My opinion? Notch will add an Aether realm, but after his own idea of it, not the way it is described here. (And he did say he will add some extra realms like the Aether in the live-stream.)

Creepers: blowing stuff up since Survival Test.
Passive mobs that resemble jellyfish. They are large, docile, and their tentacles don't actually do any damage. They drift around the Aether in the same method that real world jellyfish use. (pulsing the bell) They aren't very fast, but they drop poofs of cold cloud when killed.
They make sounds similar to the sound of wind blowing through trees.
Maybe they're a bit too much like ghasts. Criticize as needed.
Due to how much demand for it there is I think Notch will almost definitely add the aether realm, but as others said, his own idea of it.
If we want him to use things on this thread, my opinion is that once he confirms that he is 100% sure he will be making one, we should make another thread listing the block/monster/gameplay ideas in this forum, and asking which ones we most want to see in the aether. That way, Notch can easily see what popular demand is, and perhaps add something he would not have normally added.

Could not agree more. We need to organize a way to decide which suggestions in this thread are most liked by people and make an entirely community-driven vision of the Aether. Notch will make his own vision, so it's up to him how much he wants to take inspiration from us, but this will stand as the official community suggestion for the Aether. To be honest, as much as I love the ideas here (this thread is like my favorite thing in the entire world right now, after my cat and my girlfriend), I'd be happy if Notch decided to take it off in a completely different direction and surprise us all.
In other news, what about an Aether mod? Has anyone already started work on that? There's already a mod that adds a new realm (the ice mod), so how hard would an aether mod be? Any Java gurus out there feel ambitious?
Since one of the main (justified) complaints is that the nether is greatly lacking in activities, has anyone considered making a suggestion thread for extra nether blocks/mobs/features? If not, we should have one

I suggest some kind of direct alternative to the Nether's Soul Sand in the Aether. Aerorock, maybe? A type of block that causes the player to move at 1.5-2.0 speed and jump twice as high. It can be found anywhere in the Aether, but it's somewhat rare and only comes in groups of 5-10.
Additionally, their function works on anything within the single block space above them. This means that minecarts traveling on tracks built over Aerorock also move faster, and if Aerorock is placed under water that's one block deep, boats will move faster above them as well (which presents a tiny bit of a hazard, since boats are fragile).
I have no mockup design yet, but if people like the idea, I might put one together.
With that said, I also have a second concept. Two (or four) Aerorock crafted with two (or four) Soul Sand would create some sort of anomaly. Something weird... but I don't know what yet. A black hole? Magnets? A block that randomly throws whatever touches it anywhere from 2 to 6 blocks away?
Oooh, and a black hole block could be used to create a gravity "gun" (a tool to grab things from further away than one normally would be able to).
Are people seriously posting in this thread and not even bothering to read the opening post? or even look at it? I know it's been a while since I've last updated it, but It still exists.
I must say that this would be a wonderful addition to Minecraft. I fully support it.
However, there are some things that I dislike (we all have these things. :tongue.gif:).
I don't really like how the majority of the items don't give anything off if punched. I really felt that maybe the speed sand (can't remember the name right now), or that kind of material, should have been something that you could collect with your bare hands.
Then again, I'm no one to go against what the majority want.
I like these ideas a lot! I was thinking of this kind of thing, but I never got around to really writing down the ideas.
Anyway, I thought I might voice my opinion on what might be beneficial for these ideas.
Mainly just one idea for the floatsand. Perhaps make it redstone activated. So you can use it as a door or something. Maybe a trap? I don't know.

When struck, (or activated via redstone dust) Floatsand will attempt to travel in the opposite direction from which it was struck. It's path will continue indefinitely until stopped by a physical block, or is stopped by reaching the ceiling in the sky or the edge of the currently loaded map section. NOTE: A moving Floatsand block will not change directions when struck.
When floatsand hits a block while moving, it will "strike" that block hard enough to break a sand block before stopping. If it "strikes" another Floatsand block, that block will then begin to move via the same rules.
Floatsand will break torches, ladders, flowers and other miscellaneous placed items, as well as water or lava, without stopping.

I didn't mean it like that. I meant something that would turn glass into sand, clay bricks into clay balls, charcoal into wood, etc.

I saw a guy working on it. It seemed kinda crappy so far but it's something.
