Mob: Trapsnap
Art description: A Venus Flytrap as tall as the player. Has an orangish-pink mouth, with a green head. The stem is a shade a little darker than lime. Might have a leafy collar around the head, maybe have two smaller mouths as "hands" along it's stem.
Spawn: Spawns on Grassy Soil, within 40 blocks of water across the surface of the overworld, and 20 blocks of water downwards. Only spawns during the day. MUST spawn in an area that gets sunlight.
Behaviour: Hostile, but rooted to te block it spawned on. Easily avoided, but the longer it lives, the larger the likelihood of it spawning an adjacent companion...
Attacking: It can snap it's head over an adjacent block. The head then snaps back, and this is a good time to hit it. You'll have to dance around it, lunge when it's open, and jump back when it strikes.
Drops: .... got any ideas?
Special Quirks: When it spawns, it makes the block directly below it a "root" block. You have to hit this block with a shovel 15 times to kill it from below, but each hit counts as 1 use.
Health: Root Block: 15 Trapsnap: 5
So, I suppose you could let them grow and then kill certain ones, so that you'd have protection around your base from creepers and skelies and such, because mobs can hurt each other...
It should drop seeds, so you can place them around your base. Also, would other mobs attack them on sight? You'd think that a signle skeleton could easily kill one.
No, they don't get attacked on sight. But if another mob got too close, the Trapsnap would attack the other mob.
The seeds are kinda meh, but I suppose it could work if you wanted to make some good traps.
The only problem with stationary mobs is what happens when they move out of view? do they dissapear or what. They would have to be loaded as terrain and they mans that either they will hav to stop growing or the chunk will have to stay loaded in memory. It could work as other plants grow but I don't know how they work when you'r not around
So this would be a mix of a cactus and a mob? I like it, a nice way to put semi-intelligent defenses. They should rarely drop seeds, but make them 1% make it real hard to get them. Of course if it's possible to make them reproduce to adjacent blocks things would get easier after u get them.
Interesting idea, although I think it shouldn't be capable of spawning adjacent companions; you're not going to be very happy when they decide to spawn all over the island. I also think they might be better off in deep watery caverns, provides a little more of a challenge to acquire them.
Deep Watery Caverns is a no. We don't even have good underwater caverns yet anyway.
Also, you have no reasoning to back up your statement of "oh they shouldn't spawn companions." Honestly, I don't think these guys would be TOO hard to kill, and if you kill one before it makes buddies, it's all over.
@Tuqui, I don't think I really like the seeds idea, but if it was super low, like 2% I guess it would be balanced enough. The effect I was going for was that you could kind of landscape them and push them back and reroute them to make your own defences, instead of just planting them.
@Stushla, they would just stop. While you were out of the chunk, they wouldn't spawn any buddies, but just out of view they would go on their merry life.
spreading could lead to an area full of nothing but them.....
also... gives me an idea....
a big bally thing all rocks and teeth and stuff kinda a rock slime.... bounces around at night
at day it baries itself in the closest grass being hard to see and attacks anything in the 9 squares around it....
hehe

Players would just kill the root with fists to avoid damaging there shovel. Maybe the root could do damage like cactus. they should not spread because then you would HAVE to kill any you see or there will be a forest of them. I think they could drop seeds that could be used to grow more as a defense against .
First, I think it should have a cap to how many one can spawn. If one spawns regularly, it should have an indication
(like markings) and that would be the "boss". Then it can spawn up to five "workers".

Markus Persson: I have been instructed not to reply to this question, so here's a picture of a sheep instead.
I would friggin love a hostile plant mob!!!! it would make the daytime forest you so calmly walk through just ever so slightly in need of caution witch i think fits in with the rest of the world of minecraft berry nicely ^^
That no-brain piggies thing explains a lot.
1-Explains why they are so morrons
2-Explains why they come to us when we kill them
3-Explains where do zombie pigmen come from
4-Doesn't explain why this guy has sig'd me

also I think it can drop poison for weapon crafting to make weapons do more damage
or the root can be harvested to make sth else!
WHERE DO YOU PEOPLE FIND POISON IN THIS IDEA
But yeah, making the root into something would be interesting.
