Quite a simple concept, a portalion is at first glance another compass like object. Basically, it points at the closest active portal, and works in both realms. If there are no active portals however, it will randomly spin. (That's always cute :tongue.gif:)
It would be made either by:

Where is redstone, or:

[] []
where is flint and steel.
It would have a portal block like background, or possibly have water and lava, telling you whether you are in the nether or the real world.
I can't think of anything wrong with this concept, and a lot of people are crying out for it, so...yeah.

It's a lot like a weaker mesh of my Diamond and Obsidian Compass ideas. and no, it's not easy. Obsidian Portals can be made with lava a form, and water, but crafting with obsidian REQUIRES a diamond pickaxe.
Since the main advantage to going to the Nether is being able to set up waypoints for fast travel in the Overworld, being able to navigate should be possible. At the very least the basic NSEW should be doable (and can already be done by placing redstone dust on the ground and looking at its pattern)
