Prefer moving closer to the player, but no closer than 1 or 2 blocks. Strafe a bit. Get bored and move randomly.
If it poked into the player, it would not activate, but if the player is moving in its direction, it would inflate. It could also nudge the player around a bit just before getting bored; if the player nudged back, it inflates.
@TehOracle: The pixels on the side of the mob tell you how big it is. Drop frequency and damage are probably best adjusted after actually putting the fish into the game, though it should probably deal about as much as a cactus.
Yeah I would say cactus damage is appropriate. The fish is a little smaller than the 8x8 deflated (since I didn't want him to be a cube while deflated) and 16x16 (plus the tail and fins) when puffed. Drop frequency would be something to test when we could actually implement the mob, but I don't think the rate of pigs dropping ham would be a bad choice.
What about a poison variant? Many species of blowfish are poison. Also, is the 3-D modeling program you used free? Because I would like to use it if so to create some new mob and block type idea's.

Holy crap I can post things. Players should be able to create on a scale they they don't have the tools to right now. See what I mean :viewtopic.php?f=1&t=77448&p=1185259#p1185259
Poison variant could be nice... though I do have some other fish ideas that I will be adding soon.
I use 3D Studio Max 2010, which was not free. Blender, however, is a good free 3d modeling suite. No matter what you use, you will have to look up many tutorials and do lots of experimentation to learn the software. Don't give up if you get frustrated, there is a strong online presence of people willing to help out.

The meat it drops could heal a very high amount (about 6 hearts?) but has a chance of dropping an identical poison meat that instead damages you 1 half a heart every 3 seconds until you've instead LOST 6 hearts.
(6 damage in about half a minute sounds fair enough)
Drop rates for the poison meat would be about 1/4th of the time.
That could be nice, backwards from how blowfish actually work (most of their meat is poison if any is poison), but it works better for game-play.

If the meat was mostly poison and (unlike in Real Life) skill had no account as to how often you were poisoned by the meat, people simply would not use it.
The 25% gamble makes it a little more inviting to give it a try if you really want to test your luck, and the 6 heart healing is rewarding enough to buffer this further.
Erm, a ghast is only 4 by 4, and those are huge. A 16 by 16 would be the size of a house, and unless the player gets shot out like a bullet (which would be funny, and enter in a new age of fast travel/extreme sports), it will most likely become the most deadly mob in the game.
Offtopic: Well, for minecraft purposes, though, you don't neccessarily need to learn a lot about blender. I could make fully textured models day 3, with only 2 youtube tutorials. Anything fancy though, and your spot on.

~ I've thought about the phrase 'Money is the root of all evil' and I have to disagree. Evil isn't dependant on an object. I say that want is the root of all evil.
I like it. Fish in the update now don't actually swim around in the water, do they?
I've tried fishing in multi and it seems to just catch fish randomly.
It'd be better if the fish were actually swimming around in the water, like mobs.
@MrTorb - I apologize, yeah he's the size of a block when puffed. 1x1, which is 16x16 pixels. When he's deflated he's a little smaller than the character's head.
My fault for thinking in blocks. Excellent concept for a creature, still, though.

Thinking on this. I'm really wondering if 1x1 block when fully inflated is large enough. Chickens are a major pain in the ass to try to punch on purpose. Perhaps the fish should be 1x1x1 when deflated, and 2x2x2 when puffed up. Also, the Air Bubble would only be an issue if it took away a water block from the SURFACE of water that is either MORE than one block deep OR that is taken from a block that does not have water on more than one adjacent side. In that situation it will cause currents to form, but as long as it's below that level or in water than is only 1 block deep, then no currents will form and the air pocket will be filled in by surrounding water after just a few seconds.
You can't really verify this with the bucket, because you generally can't use it while underwater, but if you look closely when you break a block while underwater, for the instant after you break it, there will be an air pocket that gets almost immediately filled in. Essentially the same thing would happen for the fish, but he'd only remove the block of water when you punch him, instead of creating a block and breaking it, which would then get filled in by water.
Yeah, he'd be bigger than a chicken. He would be as big as a block of stone, and really the chicken just has a wonky bounding box. It (the bounding box for the chicken) should be a little bigger to fully encapsulate the chicken.
Now the deflated blowfish, he would be a little tough to hit as he'd basically be a tad smaller than the head of most mobs. But once he puffed, it would be pretty easy to hit him as long as you don't get poked by his spikes.
Beautiful, there should be a variant of on that swims in lava and i think it would drop poison/quiver? Poison could be crafting with a sword/arrow making one that poisons enemies (vice versa of fire basiclly ina nut-shell) and quivers could be craft with leather armor to make spikey armor? Spikey armor provides no cover but does .5 damage when a mob touches you?

Raw meat does 5 hearts.
Cooked meat heals 4.

Otherwise, so very cool. Definitely a good idea!
