Has a diamond ever been consumed by lava?happen all the time?many people get melted after they mine diamonds(the lava gets to them).now let's say that theres lava under some valuable ore.you mine the ore and it falls in the lava.hopefully theres more ore nearby.you go back to the surface and build a vacuum tube generator.
like this image below this text
= 1 vacuum tube generator
then you build the actual tubes
 =8 tubes
you build enough of them and connect them to each(they connect like minecart tracks)other until the end of the tube reaches where you want it.it sucks ITEMS(mini sized block/ore/dust/item that you can pick up)up the tube to a box(or it dumps it on the floor)in the generator.it's range is 5x5x5 and half second after the item drops the tube will suck it up if its in range.but every thing needs a flaw...you can suck yourself up in it if you jump in it,BUT,you will start to lose half a heart per 2 and a half second after 8 blocks.this is the same for any other mob.and dirt based block would be destroyed in the tube if it is 10 blocks long.
it would work like this...

*update of 11/2/10*
fluids can come through, but you need a pump.im not really sure how you would make it,but maybe like this...
you pump it,and the fluid comes toward the pump 3 blocks, then flows back 1,so its pretty much actually flowing 2 blocks(btw,im all that sure how pumps work(other then air pressure and pumping a handle)or would work in this game).if you leave the pump the fluid would just keep flowing backwards(im pretty sure thats unrealistic...).just left click the pump to pump it.
i actually think that this is a great idea. i have a mob trap and i am tired of having to go down to my collection point every single time that there is even one item there, thinking that there is more. a chest that automatically sucked them in would be a great addition to any mob trap fans out there.
