If the oceans size gets increased, then the size of landmasses should also be increased. It seems stupid to be dominated by water, when the game is focused more on land and gathering resources from it.

This. It doesn't make sense to have large bodies of water and small islands... Actually it kinda does. It's like island survival! But I do like land better so... No!

Hello? Eat my tarts? In this cosmic dance of bursting decadence, withheld permissions twist all our arms collectively. But if sweetness can win- and it can- then I'll still be here tomorrow to high five you yesterday my friend. Peace.

I find it hard to believe that you have run out of land. Is your save file over 10 gigs yet. Also look at earth. We have oceans that have continents dividing them and we still go about our lives like nothings wrong.
I never said that I ran out of land, I just don't want water covering the majority of my map....
Why not? Boats are by far THE fastest way to get around. When exploring, unbroken bodies of water would be excellent. And besides, majority ocean would be more realistic and add new challenges.
there code be different map modes. we already have peaceful mode, normal. and hard. So why not map types, such as land oriented (80% land 20% water), normal (about 65% land and 35% water) and water oriented ( 70% water and 30% land) .
that way people who get bored of the oceans can switch back or do other maps.

Or it could be just random, like sometimes you get a mostly snow world, or mostly desert, therefore sometimes you could get mostly ocean. If you don't like it, generate a new world. Easy sauce
Don't forget drift wood for when you need to make a crafting bench and aren't carrying extra wood with you. Maybe also be able to get wood back when you break boats for a little extra wood. And also could have sapplings randomly drifting in the ocean or dropped by birds [oh yeah thats only in mo-creatures mod - :tongue.gif:] So you could grow some trees in your new ocean base of operations.
EDIT: Now that you got me thinking about bodies of water and such it occured to me that the game just has one type of water. Maybe there should be two types. Fresh water and salt water?
The bottom and edges of Inland freshwater ponds and lakes should be lined with mud [the overworld version of slow-sand?] instead of sand, and there should be alot more stuff growing in and around them. Plants and maybe an amphibious mob like frogs. A dam-building beaver mob would be pretty awesome too.
In real life beavers have been known to build some pretty big nests in water using a mix of mud and logs. Their structures usually rise out of the water like little islands or mounds. They sometimes get so big they block the flow of water which is why they get called dams.
So in Minecraft they could be like small randomly generated beaver homes built on lake bottoms with just enough of the tops sticking out of the water to be noticeable. If the player swims out to one [or crosses a log bridge to one] the beaver nest can be entered and explored or converted to a player home or something.
Also for rivers where water is supposed to be flowing there would be more gravel and stone on the bottom than anything else.

I like this, it would be cool if there was a scenario customization feature, where you could turn off mobs, turn off nights, or adjust water/land.
These Ideas are amazing! I only have one problem... How deep the water can go. If U were to make some part of water go a huge way down, it would screw up a lot of building options, and the only way to regain the building options is to increase the amount of land to bedrock, which isn't a bad idea in itself BUT notch has added a code for every "X" amount of block there is an "Y" amount less light needed to spawn monsters. Now sadly the light in minecraft is very limited. So if u were to make minecraft deeper then monsters would start spawning in the highest levels of light or more. The only way to fix THAT though is to either change the code of the "level of light to spawn monsters vs. the deeper u go" to "the level of light to spawn monsters vs. the closer you get to bedrock" which would be hard since monster won't spawn often unless u go REALLY far down. The other idea to fix this is to add more levels of light, but this would be extremely time consuming cause of how many mobs work the current levels of light used. My point is that this is a lovely idea but the ocean can not go that far down, it would be messing with the code and world a lot.
Other wise I love the ideas! 's for u!
edit* one more thing I just remembered. Notch has already mentioned something about more sea mobs, different boats and scuba suits. I think someone has been lookin at the forums :wink.gif:
I think its a great idea. One problem tho, the rising and falling water thing (In the vid) it looks awesome buuuuuuut... Well, I was just wondering what kind of hit this would deliver to FPS?
I loves my text packs but I'm affraid I would have to downgrade to keep up. I just dont want my FPS going

I like this idea a lot, maybe it could be a choice when generating a world? Because you couldn't very well go back and change preexisting chunks...

re: tsunamis (& earthquakes too)
The idea of natural disasters where blocks can be destroyed sounds exciting at first but I think would be too annoying in reality. How would you feel if your castle / house /monument you'd worked for hours on was damaged or destroyed? I would personally feel cheated. The only thing in the game that has this ability at the moment are creepers, and they're pretty controversial. If you make the player's creations unsafe then it'll diminish his inclination to make them at all.
I must admit, I completely agree. To you I give x3 plus a egg:

I can see where this would obviously be true, but two other possible options would be (one) for players (who want to be "safe") to play on Peaceful, or (two) perhaps the constant threat of creation destruction would cause Mine Crafters to come up with more ingenius ways to keep destructive forces (most especially Creepers) away from their castle, manor, log cabin, etc. (Lava motes, anyone?)
A tsunami that demolishes just about anything, perhaps could be stopped with a sufficiently thick wall of stone, and maybe it would need to be repaired each time lest the tsunamis slowly (over time) manage to breach the defense.
For an earthquake, perhaps a new (or previously created) block could be placed as a flexible (?) foundation. Perhaps something made from slimes? Or from a sponge? Maybe one of the new underwater plants/mobs/etc could be the key to this flexible block.
Another anti-earthquake possibility - a block that could be used as a foundation that floats on the water and is able to move around a little (buoyant base?). I realize that building a house on an island, and then removing all the dirt blocks underneath the initial above-water layer of (ie.) dirt would have the same effect, but I'm just throwin out a suggestion.
Anti-volcano? Go with the basic trench to reroute the lava flow - it's all down to the Mine Crafter for this one.
It sounds like modern oil drills. A bit high-tech for the general view Minecraft has so far.
But what I'm trying to say is that it is like a simple, pushed wooden contraption similar to a Hand-pushed mill. It would be easy to move, as it drops all components when destroyed, and the rails can simply be picked up. You would stand on a wooden platform above the drill which would move with it. You would be able to operate all the drills systems and collect the resources. I'm not talking about a huge large, coal powered automatic drill that will automatically become the best mining machine in the game. It would be slow to move but would break blocks fast.
Still sounding a bit too modern? I still think it's more Minecrafty than a redstone mining laser.
Sounds better now? Feedback please?
Anyone?
Still a bit too modern, but that is better than a futuristic mining laser. But it's all up to Notch anyways.

I once saw a chicken push a creeper off of a cliff. I never looked at chickens the same way ever again. That is of course until I needed feathers.
I prefer modern things as minecraft does seem to follow an increasing tech curve. However, I think the drill idea is way to needlessly compliacted. underwater charges could accomplish the same thing much faster. I would be in favor of a much larger super drill that made a 30 X 30 hole though.
Why not just make it a new cart type? When you push it into a dirt or stone block it slowy breaks it like mining. You would have to put new rails down manually.
