When I saw this I instantly thought of the Kraken. Like only 1 spawn in any one world and it cant move from where it is but if you go near it in a boat it leaps out of the water and starts of a scene similar to that at the end of pirates of the Caribbean 3. Obviously giving it impossibly high health so you have to work with loads of other players to beat it and when you defeat it you get like insane amounts of treasure like diamonds and gold.
Absolutely loving this thread btw hope notch notices this.
I think that notch should start putting work towards the oceans & lake. I think they decided to put blocks of air in but I think it would be cool to capture air with a item called "a bag" & go up to the clouds & take a block of air. Then add it with glass or something so you can put it on your head & breath under water for awhile. The oceans & lakes in Minecraft should go more deeper & have underwater caves, that can also connect to other caves that leads to the surface.
I love the wealth of ideas that this thread comes up with, but I think ideas as to how to implement fish tanks and aquariums are scarce.
As it stands, even when marine mobs get implemented, you'd either have to trap mobs by building the tank around them or somehow lead them through dug out channels that connect to the tank and trap them that way.
To make things more practical, most or all aquatic mobs could drop eggs that, when placed underwater by the player, would spawn one mob of the type that it dropped from. If marine mammals are among the aquatic mobs, one could just say that the mobs drop "pearls of their lifeforce" or some hand-wavey item akin to redstone dust.
This way, populating aquariums large and small would only be a matter hunting the desired creatures as oppose to clumsy methods of trapping or mob spawning blocks (via mods or a changed system for them).
limitations to air? that seems very....limited. How about a rebreather? Infinite air without any resistance, use as long as you want until you die. You can just add a new slot to the armor for it. or how about.Different layers of the ocean.Layer 1, the top coral reef one. layer 2 going deeper like underwater caves formed by water itself. And last but not least 3. Bed rock, or as I like to call...Deep sea. Dangerous monsters lurk in the depths, and be careful to approach the light, it could be either an underwater volcano or a mob who attacks after being one block away. Flares is a good idea but theres already jack-o-lanterns which are too rare so I agree with flares. Maybe use the red dust lights?. water proof electricity? :biggrin.gif:. or how about a submarine made from two flares at the very top corners. glass in the middle of the two, iron ignots every other square than the middle, and a special block like a....submarine shoot made from crafting 4 iron ignots in a square shape. That way you'll be safe in the ocean while being able to breath while also having light. but the submarine has limited air space. About 5 minutes of it. you either have to go up to get more air or swim with your re-breather. Finding special dungeons like underwater broken pirate ships with a mob spawner inside it with a crack right in the middle. ;3. to make buildings underground you have to make a closed off structure, better if you bring glass huh? thats my ideas for underwater adventuring. I had space adventuring ideas for minecraft too! I got very good ones too
The idea of many a submarine that can last about 15 minutes of air with 6 blocks of space inside and one command block like getting on a boat. I wanted the idea of the submarine for the purpose of staying safe. If your with the rebreather, sure you can breath as long as you want but your as hostile and unsafe as the next guy, plus you have no light, you'd have to put a source of light like in caves and torches. I was thinking of having a submarine to 1.be safe 2.have room to put temporary furnaces, chests, etc. have like a wheel on the front and and entrance on the top of it. You click on the entrance and you go inside, to get out click on the door again, to maneuver the submarine just click on the wheel. Win win. And the submarine has two lights flashing in a circular motion in front of you never stop flashing so you don't have to put down torches while you ship flows safely through the dark realms of the undersea. thats just me I guess.
I read it in the comments, and I thought for a little while. Hey it might be a good idea, all we have to do is even it out with players who want inf. air to those who don't. So rebreathers under water is inf. air but your unsafe from the mob. The sea is pretty dark so theirs bound to be tons of monsters. And a submarine, safe but limited. Say if you want to build the city of atlantis with a bunch of glass you can take the submarine down avoiding any mobs then get out and plant flares to keep them at bay while your constructing and build it quick. Coming night fall the water is darker than ever. I don't know it seems like a good idea. Everything has to work in a matter of balance and control.
2. Water, and Lighting
OK. So if you ever so much have set foot into an ocean, you know light and water do not mix well, at all. It becomes near pitch black after a small amount of blocks. This discourages a great amount of underwater exploration, and in all, makes the seas very depressing
Minecraft is awesome. Real men play Minecraft. Go Minecraft!
Krakens would be nice, but all those tentacles..
Indeed. Even if it isn't part of this thread, I would be happy to see any improvement.
Yes, notch should.
And he should take most of the ideas from this thread or I will kill him... Not really.

[SSSS] [Skeleton]Support nice ideas. [Spider] [Zombie]
Biome Terrain mod fixes that
Anyway, this is a great idea, seeing that it is very hard to get much benefit out of oceans
Thats kinda hard, since the world is 1.8x the Earth..
theoretically!
Nono, (s)he's right. It is almost all earth.
(sorry qwertyz D:)
