I was using an underground waterfall near some lava to get myself some obsidian. I would wall off the water flow to hit parts of the lava, then using careful block placement and careful mining I would gather the stuff with my diamond pick axe. At one point I was trying to direct the flow and accidentally put a block up high on the water flow, and it disappeared. I mined all around the area I had plugged but I had destroyed the water spawn block or whatever it is.
I know it's just a game but that's pretty lame. I'd like to see more realistic water in the game.
its minecraft not the real world.
you can plug up water and remove it. You cant do that is in real world you say?
You cant punch down trees into perfectly square cubes either.
Speaking of realistic water, we filled an area ~34x34 and then down to the ocean floor with sand. We then built a giant sphere with a diameter of 32 to fit inside. After removing all the sand, the water flowed into the box as if there was a wall there (like a waterfall) instead of filling back up with water as you would expect in the ocean.
then take a corner out with a bucket. it'll come back.

Minecraft must NOT turn into the next WoW or Runescape.

Depending on what you want the obsidian for, it may be faster and easier to carry the buckets of lava around, place the lava where you want the obsidian (use dirt to keep it contained) and put water on top of it. Only the lava placed with the bucket will be obsidian, though - lava that flows turns into cobblestone.
Don't place the water DIRECTLY onto the lava - it'll just vanish. It still needs to "flow" onto the lava so place it at the edge of the pool and let it flow out. You can then scoop up the water block you placed and the water that flowed out will vanish - so you should only need one bucket if you're careful.

Yea, I learned a lot last night with a couple buckets of water. I didn't know I could basically create water like this. Thanks everyone.
If I had known what I was doing I would have just dumped a bucket of water back into the empty void I had plugged and I'd have my stupid waterfall back, but the way everyone described above is even more useful. I use controlled pools with careful mining. I let the water flow into the area I just mined the Obsidian out of, that way I never lose a block in lava ever again.

I see a lot of people with elaborate water systems in their homes, is there a way, without hacking, to create a water source I'm not aware of yet?
put water in a 2X2:
then take a corner out with a bucket. it'll come back.

Ok, but can I get that to flow? I've never really used buckets for anything, can I dump water on the lava to make obsidian?

Also you can do it this way

The blank spot, will fill in and you can take it each time.
