Square gears exist and I want them in minecraft for more complex machinery. Maybe like water pumps and stuff like that.
For skeptics, I have proof:
I suggest the shape be:

You can get 4 gears at one time.
The advent of gears would require a place to put them on as well - so nails would be a decent addition and simply made as well.

Yielding 4 nails as well. Resmelting nails into bars is possible as well.
Obviously it opens up crafting to make more complex things and one could set up a massive series of gears to move stuff, placing a furnace at one end and using it as a means of powering something (maybe a winch to pull roped platforms up a pulley?) Either way, it should be fun.
Seeing the square gears video instantly made me think of minecraft.
