Tool Chest
Has several slots for tools in it and When placed next to a workbench it automatically combines with it and alters what can be crafted based on what tools are inside.
For example you might require tools of a certain material to craft anything of the next hardest tier material. Or you could put a mortar and pestle in it to allow dye to be ground from flowers. It might also affect which object is crafted out of the same recipe so you can have a styalistic choice rather than simply upgrading it to unlock all the recipes.
Codex / Research Table
This is more for when the recipe list expands but obviously you eventually need a way for people to learn and keep track of all the recipes. A question mark on the crafting matrix can open up the list of recipes maybe one that can filter out only those that include the material or materials currently on the grid.
I'm sure you would have done something like that anyway but I'm thinking you could have a way to discover them yourself without having to look them up.
If you've never played the flash game Doodle God look it up. It's an interesting game based solely on that premise. For a research table I'm thinking you could have two slots for items and if there is a recipe involving those two objects you will "discover" it and have it added to your codex. I'm not sure that simply adding any undiscovered recipe would be best or you could maybe have some kind of system of luck or consumable items involved as well.
You could also have this unlock certain recipes that wouldn't be craftable even if you knew the combination ahead of time, since your character has to learn it.
Also, you could allow a toolchest to be connected to the table and have a system similar to what I wrote above.
Shield
Made out of stone, iron, etc. Goes in an additional clothing slot and is automatically equipped with a sword. Increases armor for attacks made in front of you and has a chance of blocking arrows and other projectiles. Both of these properties increase when the shield is held up with Rclick, but the sword can't be used at the same time as this. Other armor is nerfed to compensate.
Backpack
Goes in an additional clothing slot and doubles your inventory from half the current size to what it is now.
Not much reason for this but whatever. Maybe there are alternate things to go in the slot so you have to choose between them. Like scuba gear. Or a jetpack.
Mop
Cleans up water. Why not?
Rudimentary Shapes
Raw materials can be crafted into various simple shapes like half-blocks, spheres, slopes, etc. for cosmetic purposes.
Smoothing
I'm not sure how this would affect the art direction of the game but it probably wouldn't be too much trouble to simply cut the edges off certain types of blocks (like dirt, trees and anything affected by gravity). This would make tree trunks nice and octagonal as well.
So for example if A = air, liquid or leaves, S = a smoothed block and U = an unsmoothed one:
A A A S U
S S A A U
S S S S S
In a vertical cross-section would smooth like this:
With the lower-right corner unsmoothed because of gravity.
It would probably be a good idea to also allow a single smoothed cube to be walked up like stairs.
Vehicles, Wheels, etc.
This game could really use a dune buggy, especially if combined with the "smoothed objects work like stairs" idea above.
I realize this would probably mean large changes in the game engine but I think it would be very worth it to eventually support moveable constructed objects as well.
Mini-Cubes
This is a little more ambitious but I think it's a cool idea.
Raw materials and possibly certain other objects can be cut into a bunch of cubes maybe 1/8 scale. These blocks could then be crafted together in 3D to create a placeable custom block.
So say you place your stack of mini-cubes or one of these custom blocks onto the crafting matrix. It automatically changes to a 3D editor that can craft up to a single regular-sized cube (8x8x8) for the personal crafter or 2 cubes (16x16x16) for the workbench.
Sky Whale
Self-explanatory. Frankly I'm surprised this hasn't been included already.
