Thanks Vexed, I haven't been following the suggestions too much recently so I didn't think of making one of those.
Also, I'll say it again- The reason I don't support scaffolding structures being completely destroyed by taking out their base is because:
A. You could only build vertical structures if you used the cactus logic
B. It would be to easy to grief players trying to build
C. It's already ridiculously easy to take down scaffolding (one or two punches without a tool) so why make something easy (compared to destroying any other block but perhaps glass) even easier?
perhaps the scaffolding could be place vertically as long as the base is touching a secure peace of land. and perhaps you SHOULDN'T be able to be taken down in 1 or 2 punches and should have the same durability as wood. BUT you could safely disassemble the scaffolding if you right click it would show a progress meter that would fill up (taking longer based on how many connected scaffolding there are. when the bar filled up all of the scaffolding would be in your inventory or if your inventory was full; on the ground. and of course griefers would be a problem. that's why people have the whitelist server mod

Eh... Making an entirely new deconstruction mechanic to suit a single block does not sound like a good idea. I think everyone's overcomplicating this-
The scaffolding blocks already make it far easier to use/deconstruct than the existing dirt scaffolding and doesn't require any new features or mechanics. Just a single block, and a crafting pattern.
Lets try to keep this simple, considering it's not a very game-changing or important idea.

Pretty simple suggestion. Planks can be turned into scaffolding.

I have some alternate suggestions for the recipe, if I may.

Sticks and wood, just like it appears above. Basically, the ladder recipe, with a plank instead of the middle stick. Is placed as a free-standing ladder along one block-side (like a door). Other blocks can be attached to either side, or along the block-side the ladder/scaffold has been placed. IOW, top view:

... where is the scaffold; are legitimate for block placement.
As for making metal scaffolding?

Works the same way. The freestanding ladder is made of iron (or iron and stone); again, materials are exactly what is shown.
... and, on a somewhat related note, I'd love to see metal ladders:

deconstuction would make this a thousand times easier, and the concept is simple

Can't say I read all the replies, but I support. It would make construction projects feel more like construction projects (in a good way).
Edit: read back through, and I must say that as long as it still gives back a scaffolding block when it's broken, it shouldn't have it's own deconstruction specifications. That, and you should be able to climb it like a ladder on all sides as suggested.
No, the deconstruction makes this a thousand times more complex.
the concept of DECONSTUCTION is simple. The addition to scaffolding makes it more complex. perhaps for every peice of scaffolding there is it adds .5 seconds to the deconstruction meter. so basicly: 1 scaffolding = .5 sec., 2 scaffolding = 1 sec., 3 scaffolding = 1.5 sec., and so on

The only change I would suggest considering is perhaps using 5 sticks rather than wood, making it even cheaper.
Other than that, just Keep It Simple, Stupid. They shouldn't function as ladders, that would make ladders completely worthless. They should act like any normal block in terms of deconstruction. Using any other system would be needlessly complex and would create more issues.
This is a game about mining, and a couple big things about mining have not yet been taken into account. One is that mine shafts may collapse, and thus need shoring up (sand and gravel don't quite fill this void). The other is this: Scaffolding.
Even though we can use giant stacks of dirt, sand, or gravel to get us up where we need to be, isn't that sort of like using a brick for something it wasn't designed for? I don't mean we ought to lose this functionality, but really it would be much neater to be able to construct scaffolding to take us one step closer to the feel of real miners.
Also, visually, scaffolding would stand out. I recently had a project I was working on where I thought about bricking something in with dirt, and then realized that when I came back to it from a different angle, I might not be able to tell the dirt from other dirt around it, and therefore I ended up using cobblestone instead. There are a few instances in which it would really help to be able to tell that you specifically built in that area, and that it wasn't just normal landscape; scaffolding would work well in this instance without being as time-consuming to take out as cobblestone.
I voted for scaffolding to have ladder sides, but now that I've read the arguments pro and con, I think I prefer it without. Or maybe you could attach a ladder to the sides you need to climb on.

My YouTube channel is currently on hiatus, but I hope to get back to it at some point. Content is fairly random, but can be enjoyable, and is mostly game footage (mostly random Minecraft clips) from my nephews and me. Most popular MC vid so far is the one Vechs laughed at on Twitter!
I leave my polls open. You can recast your vote any time you want.
Personally, I enjoy any future prospects of "support" for mine shafts and large player constructs. Scaffolding would be key in both of these applications.
On it's own with current mechanics, however, it's simple and effective enough to warrant implementation.
complexity isn't a bad thing, and deconstruction is a simple concept/mechanic
needless complexity is. We already have a perfectly good block destruction mechanic, there is no need to supercede that for this block. A cheap, fragile block that is thematically designed is all we need.

1. (in this case im assuming that we will be unable to climb the block) if you were to fall off the side of the scaffolding while collecting it, what would you do? seeing as how it would be unlikely that someone make a set of stairs for the scaffolding and are more likely to pillar jump(im taking this part from what i saw of other minecrafter's building styles) how would they get back up to start re-collecting
2.Hey enduar, Whats your opinion on this

Two hits (so hardly a moment of your time) is as fast as I think is necessary. Anything more complicated/faster would be overkill.
Someone mentioned breaking it like a cactus, but that's too easily griefed and thus not practical for multiplayer, and possibly glitchy regarding horizontal construction.
Simple block. Simple implementation. Easy fix to a minor aesthetic detail. :biggrin.gif:

Yes, I agree. A cheap, fragile block is best.
