Well. Judging by the size of scaffolding I could see a small lag issue when you simultaneously destroy some particularly large scaffolding networks. Also, I could see it easily greifed to outright kill players by knocking everything out from under them at once in multiplayer.
Also, the quick deconstruction of the blocks far surpasses that of other blocks, so I'm not sure the instant total-destruction is really necessary, I think.
OK, 4 ladders can be made from 14 wood, so the ratio is 2 to 7.
if scaffolding were to function as ladders, the ratio would need to be more inefficient than that, like 2 to 8. Like this recipe.

this would make 1 scaffolding.
this is a lot more expensive, but maybe there could be two kinds of scaffolding, ladder, and non-ladder.

Minecraft must NOT turn into the next WoW or Runescape.

I guess scaffolding platforms could be made if the reed system and the leaves system is combined somehow. Scaffolding "pillars" would be supporting the platforms and then you could tear it down in a couple of blows.
Might I suggest an alternate recipe for these scaffolds?
And I don't think the sides of the scaffolds should be claimable. I think if you are required to use ladders to climb up, it will stress the importance of using a variety of tools to complete your goals.
Also, like reeds and wheat, if a "support scaffolding" is destroyed, I believe all scaffolds above it too should be destroyed, but not below. This will add a new form of strategy and sabotage when player-verses-player is released. What's better than sneaking up on an oblivious enemy builder, breaking his scaffolds, and watching him fall to his death?
I just don't really see the need for scaffolding, if it's a free-floating structure I use a stack of gravel or something to get it started but other than that I just hold down the shift key.

Well, after enjoying Minecraft for a long time I finally broke down and contributed back: exactly one adventure map. TRY IT NOW! YAY! Fall of Kingdoms
I'd been meaning to register to post just such a suggestion, and this thread *almost* covers what I was going to suggest.
My variant of the idea involved using ladders for crafting climbable scaffold like so:
[] []
[] []
where = ladder and can be interchangeable with
this recipe would yield 2 scaffold blocks made of either wood or steel (depending on the centre block)
- methinks it would be reasonable enough to craft without being cheap enough to replace ladders for normal ladder function
I was thinking it could be taken down with one hit from any non-tool item and three from tools (for fast disassembly but enough give that one errant swing whilst mining won't drop you), and will go straight into available inventory spaces instead of dropping as a block to pick up like everything else does (see point #3 below for why).
The reason for allowing both wood and steel scaffold are to address a couple of things I encountered:
[*:3t6yufke]the easy assembly/disassembly building scaffold as everyone else has discussed already
[*:3t6yufke]mine scaffolding - I'm sure we've all encountered those hanging deposits just out of reach that result in spidery bridges of dirt poking out in the middle of caves using current scaffolding techniques
[*:3t6yufke]hazardous mining scaffold and temporary bridges - wooden scaffolding would be less useful over lava due to the threat of combustion, hence the availability of steel scaffolding. Re: scaffold going straight back into inventory - if you knock down a bridge of normal blocks over lava there's a good chance you'll lose them unless you're almost on top of them.. in which case you might fall when you grab them. This scaffold style and mechanic would let you fold it back up quickly and safely and give you a chance to catch yourself if you overextend yourself and slip off the side
It would be good also if liquids went through scaffolding so they could be placed into water or lava without destroying source blocks (but wood would burn up in lava of course) and so they couldn't be used to plug leaks, but I don't know if that would be possible depending on how the engine can handle blocks occupying the same space (it's probably one of those issues like why liquids can't flow past doors or ladders)
Thanks, but an addendum to your first post:
You listed my crafting recipe without pointing out that the stick icons need to represent ladders in this case and not sticks - might cause confusion for anyone who doesn't read through the whole thread.
That's why the ladder-siding is an alternative choice on the poll, rather than the main one. I prefer the scaffolding normal, without anything special. :biggrin.gif:
it should have to be connected, if its unsupported it gets destroyed (like cactus)
- usefull for deconstructing
- also goes with hard to destroy with tools
Thanks Vexed, I haven't been following the suggestions too much recently so I didn't think of making one of those.
Also, I'll say it again- The reason I don't support scaffolding structures being completely destroyed by taking out their base is because:
A. You could only build vertical structures if you used the cactus logic
B. It would be to easy to grief players trying to build
C. It's already ridiculously easy to take down scaffolding (one or two punches without a tool) so why make something easy (compared to destroying any other block but perhaps glass) even easier?
Also, the quick deconstruction of the blocks far surpasses that of other blocks, so I'm not sure the instant total-destruction is really necessary, I think.

Either way, I love the idea.
well i love the idea, but there is a flaw in the logic of having ladders for the sides.
16 scaffolding = 5 wood
16 ladders = 56 wood
Errr... anyone else see a flaw?
sooo my idea to even this out a bit
the recipe:
[]
I dunno why iron... It just makes me think of extra support :tongue.gif:
Either that or it could only make 4 scaffolding, which are one time use
Thanks, voicelessbard for the great avatar and sig! (search him in the MC forums)

I see a flaw in your math.
5 wood = 16 scaffolding
7 sticks = 1 ladder
28 wood = 16 ladders
It's still not a good ratio, but it's not AS bad.
