Pretty simple suggestion. Planks can be turned into scaffolding.

5 wood makes 16 scaffolding blocks.
Scaffolding would be a semi-filled block (meaning you can see through it like leaves). It would appear like a box with x-shaped braces in it (you would be able to see through the struts).
The important part about scaffolding is that it would be very easy to deconstruct (one or two punches) making it excellent for construction (making dirt stacks obsolete) as it's easy to take down and build up in many ways.
Very simple. Very useful. Takes out the somewhat ridiculous dirt scaffolding that is currently used. Is also more aesthetic, as far as construction projects and make-shift support columns go.
I searched before posting- This idea was suggested elsewhere, but has not had it's own thread (This idea, specifically). Due to the simplicity, but overall usefulness of it I should hope it would be implemented.
TL;DR
A cheap, dispensable, easy to deconstruct block made of wood that is slightly see-through and can used as scaffolding.
New Developments and Suggestions:
Sides of Scaffolding acting like Ladders (Gustav0 and Myself)
Uncovered surfaces of scaffolding adopt a solid wood top so you're walking on solid ground rather than struts (Postronicman)
Scaffolding blocks require more blows when hit with a tool than with your hand making accidental strikes while mining or working on scaffolding less likely to destroy what you're standing on. (Mad Danny)
Scaffolding blocks do not hinder the passage of liquids, allowing water to pass through it. (Mad Danny)
As an addition to the above idea, scaffolding could alternatively be made of Iron so that it could be constructed in Lava. (Mad Danny)

~ I've thought about the phrase 'Money is the root of all evil' and I have to disagree. Evil isn't dependant on an object. I say that want is the root of all evil.
I think that if a scaffold block has no solid block on top of it, the top dimension should have a solid top and the sides of the scaffolding should be edited in recognition of the solid top. It would kind of be like how the texture of a dirt block changes when grass grows on it.
Good idea, but i don't think it would work well. i just use dirt as scaffolding, theres no need for acual scaffolding
Well the idea is that it's even more easily destroyed than dirt, thus making it obsolete and introducing a more logical, aesthetically pleasing block to take it's function.

When you break it down do you get the scaffolding back? Or is it just one time use? Also maybe the sides could act like ladders?
Yes, you get the scaffolding back. Easily put down, easily picked up. It's meant to make for hassle-free building.
As for the sides acting like ladders... Well, I'd hate to see the function of ladders be overridden. I'm not sure about the details, but judging by the number of scaffolding blocks you get out of the formula, you would probably get far more scaffolding for the wood you've used than you would for ladders, meaning if someone isn't cramped on space the scaffolding would make ladders obsolete.
So I thought about it, but elected to leave it out and simply have ladders alone serve that purpose. It makes a little more sense that way, no need for redundancy.

Also a good idea that makes the whole thing look better. I don't see how it would be too incredibly difficult to implement, either (though I believe it will require it to be technically two blocks, unfortunately).

One of the thinkg I "hate" most about having to use dirt as a scaffold is that if I fall down (let's face it: I can't hold in "shift" all the time) I can't climb up again, and placing dirt in the shape of a stair takes so much longer to destroy.
Well, I think the abundance of these scaffolding blocks should make it less messy to use larger surface areas of them. Also, the deconstruction time for "staircase structures" would be greatly reduced thankfully, so the whole process could be easier.
I'll go ahead and update the first post with these new ideas. Thanks for the support guys!
Edit: I've altered the first post and the poll, so everyone will need to resubmit their votes.
Nice idea, I agree that they should be able to replace ladders, but what about the ability to climb down them (like to place a block on a lower level) also the programming to make it so if you destroy the bottom block it all is destroyed (which is the best idea) already exists, cacti and reeds already do this. Lastly, 5 planks should only make 5 scaffold, since these are easy to make and reusable
The amount you get per craft is debatable. I chose 16 at first because I didn't want to make it 4. Also, is it even possible to craft things that aren't exponents of 2? (2, 4, 8, 16, 32, ect)
Being wary of things that look like essential basics of the code and not just Notch's weird fetish for 4's and 16's in the crafting table.
I was thinking about the numbers a little, and I thought of 3 good totals, either 4 reusable ladder-sided blocks(this is 2 more than you could get in ladders for the equivalent wood, but it takes more space than a ladder), 8 reusable non-ladder-sided(because I think 16 is too much), or 16 one use ladder-sided(especially quick to deconstruct because you can just light them on fire since you won't get them back anyway). if you make the design something like

then the 4 reusable ladder-sided is only 1 more than equivalent ladders.

And I agree, we need scaffolding, it also needs to function like a ladder too, and why are people so conservative about new block types? Especially ones that many have been wanting for a while.
Mostly I'm trying to keep the material usage balanced so that scaffolding is easy enough to make, yet does not make other items/blocks become obsolete (Except dirt as a scaffolding substitute).
I'm wary of making the sides climbable mainly because it just doesn't need it, really. It's a dual purpose that a ladder placed against the side of a scaffolding block would do just as easily.
I understand it's uses as a safety-net coincide quite well with the topic, but it also might make things a bit too easy as well as the stated ladder/scaffolding dual-purpose redundancy.
I suppose that's why it's left up to a vote, however. :biggrin.gif: We'll see which is more popular, I'm not really much against it.
At first I didn't like the idea, but after reading more of the thread, I have changed my mind.
The way I'd like to see it is:
- Gustave0's craft formula (I'm unsure about the amount received)
-2 or 4 "ladder" sides
-Needs a block below it in order to be placed (another scaffold would work, but not things like ladders and torches)
-If the bottom scaffold (or the block below it) breaks, they all break (like cacti and reeds)

Thing is, not everybody build and deconstructs perfect towers for scaffold. Some make platforms, and the reed/cactus system for determining what can stay and what can't doesn't support that. Sideways rapid deconstruction would be needed, and burning is not always an option. A additional system would be needed to allow placing on the sides. Thing is, I can't think of a decent system. Maybe have an additional block, perhaps generated by scaffold which collapses when there is nothing next to it. Like this:

With being scaffold and being support. Support can be generated instantly by scaffold when there is no block directly beneath it, providing the scaffold with support while allowing it to collapse when the bottom is destroyed.
That entire idea just spawned while I was typing. I think I may have had too much ice cream.
