Yea, the tome of mastery (excellent name, btw, was just going to call it the "web tome" XD) will require a blood tome to make, which requires the mats of a basic tome to make, thus making it more expensive than all three. Though, I think it would be preferable if tomes didn't have "uses", since in any situation where there is a monster you can take control of, there is likely either an angry necromancer nearby, or another monster. Perhaps if there are uses, a tome reverts to a lesser leveled tome when its uses are used up?
Also, how about when holding the master's tome, you can select monsters from afar (Aoe select?) and then while they are selected, point at where you want them to go (or what to attack) and right click? That way, you could direct your army from a mountain top, preferably in a rain storm, while screaming in an ancient language.

~ I've thought about the phrase 'Money is the root of all evil' and I have to disagree. Evil isn't dependant on an object. I say that want is the root of all evil.
Update. Added spiders, ballista, and the tome of mastery. You guys tell me what you think of them.

I think the master tome should be harder to make. Maybe with trophies from creepers (gunpowder) on either side?
Sounds good. Will do.

Thanks. Looks good. Fixing now. Also adding glow zombie.

I love the graphics for your new items! And I think the ideas are good. Although I'm not sure that I would want them in Minecraft. I think a great alternative would be to create it as a mod, and then anyone that wanted to could use it. Unfortunately I can't quite put my finger on why I would not use it myself... I apologize for not being terribly helpful.

Its alright, I respect your opinion, and its understandable if some don't see this being implemented.
Now, update: Added glow zombie, changed the necromancing table's recipe.

The problem I have is that this stuff is pretty occult and players come from all sorts of different religious backgrounds. I think this could turn a lot of people off of the game while not providing much benefit (It's not any cooler than the alchemy already proposed, and alchemy isn't religious it's just an archaic science.)
Also I'm sure notch will steer clear of this. He wouldn't even call the Nether "Hell"!
At the same time by all means make a mod. It's the beauty of indy games.
Right clicking with it will cause an explosion FX and sound but will not yield any destruction, it will summon 5 non-hostile creepers who you can control to go kamikaze enemies or walls, due to the fact that the book requires 124 gunpowder, it lasts forever, but requires a 30 second cooldown between creeper summons. the cooldown will only start when the last creeper goes boom or dies.
= The Tomb of 's
Summons holy creepers, same as above but these creepers don't deal damage to the terrain, only monsters. Holy creepers are white with golden eyes and mouths.
I feel pretty bad, Torb. You've been a really good supporter of my 2x2 Crafting Grid and I think some of my other suggestions too, but I just don't like this idea at all. It's overly complicated, and just has so much completely new content needed to make it work, rather that fitting in with existing materials.
It also just increases the already drastic gap between starting players who are just struggling to survive a zombie attack and the experienced players who are barely troubled by any mobs at all. Since it is something that requires you to go up against a number of skeletons, it's pretty much impossible for a beginner player, who would really benefit from summoning these things, to have any chance at being able to take advantage of them.
The player who is experienced enough to take down the skeletons will get to the point that they can pretty much take anything down and not need the summons, so if they do use them, it'll just make the game that much easier and less interesting for them.
Ultimately the real problem with this has to do with what you ultimately are accomplishing: You are getting the game to play itself for you.
Yes... not only is the game masturbating, you're TEACHING it to masturbate, and then you're WATCHING.

Made me laugh. Yea, I can see your concerns, though. As for the new players not getting any necrocrafting, any alternitives to skeletons, for getting soul gems then?
Edit: Hmm... im mulling it over in my head. I mainly had the idea of being able to summon a helping hand, and to prevent abuse made it where you had to fight skeletons for it. But you make valid points. Any suggestions on how to make it blend with normal minecraft more?

Unless you can maybe cut the hand off of a zombie(when attacking with the necrodagger, but before the zombie actually dies, similar to how sheep drop wool) and be able to cast a spell on it with the dark tomb so it can use your necrodagger to attack while you're at a safe distance. Maybe have it so using it this way will destroy the hand and dagger when they kill the skeleton to make it drop the soul gem. That way it's faster and easier for more skilled players to use the necrodagger directly, but less skilled players can go up against weaker zombies cut their hands off with the necrodagger and use their hands to go after skeletons more easily.
I agree with this 100%, it should be implemented into the game for A.I to be on your side, or, like this, there should be roaming NPCs and you should have a call button, if you right-click them it opens up their inventory, you can give them things, and if you call them again, they stop (to say defend your csastle, House etc.)
You could simplify the proccess by having it just need to be stabbed before being taken over, using a "is stabbed" flag in the ai's script, so as to avoid having an extra drop that only serves one purpose.
But it makes me feel bad to simplify your idea, because you feel bad not liking mine D:
.. That said, I think you missed the middle ground when you posted. Most of the population can take on a skeleton, barely. For those people, it would be like getting a helping hand. An army would be too difficult for them to make, so they generally would stick to 1-3 minions, and some would adopt a long term goal of getting the more advanced undead (spider mount, anybody?). With the undead all eventually dieing of combat, it serves as a constant goal for the moderately, or even lesser skilled players.
This post was written before, but I accidently hit the back button, so this is more poorly worded. :C

So basically you would make it so stabbing a zombie with the Necro dagger has a chance of turning it directly into a minion without all the voodoo rituals? That might actually be feasible.
Still... The problem with the overall idea is that it snowballs drastically. 1 minion gives you a good chance to get a 2nd minion, 2nd minion makes it easy to get a 3rd, even though one might die along the way, eventually you gather up enough minions that they kill enemy mobs before the enemy mobs can fight back.
And really, being "just barely able to kill a skeleton" doesn't last long, at least not in my experience. Once I was able to take out my first 6-10, I started noticing the patterns and weaknesses, and it soon became "I can ALWAYS kill a skeleton, provided it doesn't ambush me."
This idea isn't really something that interests me personally, so it's silly to cater to my interests. I'm just pointing out balancing issues. Unless the minions only have a finite time they can survive PERIOD,(unrelated to their health) they're just going to keep building and building. And if they do have a finite time that they exist before wearing out, how long would that be and still be worth the rituals and all the trouble?
It's not really my thing, so my ability to guesstimate on the costs vs benefits for this is limited.

Gives you a Creeper Rune.
