How about a "Hell Guard," which would guard a hell portal to help prevent ghasts, or on the hell side, keep the area around the portal safe. They would wander freely between hell and the normal world, so there is no guarantee that they will be in the dimension they are needed in.
Tome and Soul amulet in the first two slots.
= Soul block = Bucket of lava
They are 2x3x2 mobs (like the blood golem) and their attack deals 5 hearts of damage, but they're slow, and you can only have one assigned to a gate. They can take 20 hearts of damage. Their eyes can glow red if a ghast is near by. The ghast will lose its ability to shoot fireballs until it leaves the vicinity, or the guard leaves the dimension. The guard also has the ability to remove ghasts from the normal dimension, but it takes two hearts of damage doing this.
It might need a bit of editing, but still. What do you think?
Maybe if the summon goes bad, there's a chance that the mob may spawn as a pig? It might be a good laugh. Or perhaps it disintegrates and covers your floor with useless blobs of stuff.

Sounds interesting. The craft looks like a portal though. What are they supposed to look like?
Edit: would be funny for a slight, slight chance of a necromancy making a harmless mob on failure. Would be funny to be summoning a blood golem, diamond sword out, to have a pig poof out.

Are you saying minecraft shouldn't have zombies and skeletons?

I don't know what it would look like. Probably like a blood golem, but black, and emitting a faint glow.
This summons a happy joyful pig which will walk around turning any mobs that attack it into happy joyful mobs. All happy joyful mobs have pink hearts floating around them and they won't attack you until they are destroyed. On the other hand, they don't do anything for you either. Also, because they're pigs, they die pretty quickly.
This creates a dirt zombie. It digs a pit two blocks deep for it to hide in. It then looks just like a dirt block. When a mob steps on it, it jumps out of the hole. The force knocks the mob back four meters, and it takes one heart of damage. Then the dirt zombie attacks like a regular zombie, but not light sensitive.

Hmm.. Camo mob concept is interesting, though for a zombie to camo sounds a little odd, and not much point for camo in a summoned mob. Something like a spawned mob, maybe something similar to the mite in the "tunnel mite" suggestion, with a "burrowing" ability, would be interesting, and suggestion worthy.

I like the borrowing idea, might make for good traps in PVP.
I also enjoy the idea of having harmless mobs appearing in failed necromancy tests.
Hmm, I didn't consider pvp possibilities (due to the fact that i always play sp), which would make camo creatures great for your hidden bases. I was stuck on the concept of a 6 foot tall zombie jumping into a hole in the ground and blending in.
Edit: I sounded a little dickish. I meant that it would be nice if it were a golem, or specialized mob made for the concept.

I was thinking more of a 1 by 1 creature jumping out at you.
I'm working on that. By tomorrow you should see a new thread by me with three new hidden 1x1x1 mobs.
Looking forward to it.

I only wish that I knew how to mod. Torb, this is an absolutely incredible idea that I am absolutely in love with. If you were to implement this into a mod I would download it the MOMENT it was released. I am personally not a huge fan of golems being associated with necromancy, mostly because they were never living in the first place; however, the flesh/blood golem is a lot more related. But that's just my personal preference and a small quibble. Using tiered tomes for the different sets of minions (basic for basic minions, blood for minions with abilities) is great. I love the redesigned table and recipe that Isla posted under it along with the red background for the menu.
As for the problems with the bleak, maybe you could redesign it to look a lot like a mini 1x1 ghast that floats around you. It would float a lot slower and hover maybe a block above the ground and give all the same bonuses with all the same restrictions you planned. Creating a "mini-ghast" would also justify the projectile idea, maybe even combining the idea with your ghost plan. The projectile would deal a small amount of damage while debuffing. Perhaps an item necessary for its creation would be an essence farmed off of the ghast much like soul shards are farmed off of skeletons. Special arrows could be necessary to farm it making a high material cost the price for such a powerful minion.
Anyway, like I said before I absolutely love this idea, and I would donate much time and effort into helping with it if at all possible.

When I go into my favorite server's pvp zone, I will have an army of zombies at my back! XD
