There isn't a way to remedy this, other than what you said (lifespan). There are plenty of unique downsides to the crafting though. Most summons burn up in daylight, and the ones that dont are costly. But that only hinders the effect. For those who want to build an army (for asthetic purposes, or otherwise), it would quickly become a pain to have to constantly replace troops.
Typing this, I've thought up a few other possible solutions.
A. is still reserved to lifespans.
B. A limit of how many undead can follow you at once, thus making it more valuable to have better minions (in that you cant have a hoard of friendlies, also doesn't stop you from making a castle guard).
C. A limit of summonables at once, perhaps added to by building more necromancer's tables (think starcraft's supply depot.).
D. A built in ai that builds some sort of home base, and provides actual resistance after you amass more than 5 troops (think 1st person rts, which might be lame, or super awesome).
E. Pvp might be a solution as well. But thats a given.
These seem like all the possible solutions to me. But if anyone thinks of another, they can feel free to say it.
Oh, and its not silly to cater to the interests of someone who finds a big gaping flaw in the idea. It can only get better with a closer look at balancing issues. Even if you don't necessarily like the idea, your imput is always welcome.
Last note: What I meant by "having it stabbed before being taken over" was more along the lines of just having a " has been stabbed" flag set so you can cast the spell with the tome, instead of an extra, one-purpose-item drop.

Zombie Follower
It cannot attack, it cannot do anything to help you besides- summoning more "useful" minions. This connected to my Alternate Dimensions idea. The zombie follower will stay near the necromancer table. It will increase the success rate by 1%. You can make more followers to increase succsess. Killing them will give you an OtherWorld essence where you get a screen showing multiple new monsters to do your evil bidding.
Hmm. A minion that you summon that buffs you slightly, and then can sacrifice to summon more powerful monsters, is a very win idea. Now if only there were a monster, that could be powerful and summonable without being OP, but also demonic enough to require undead sacrifices. Hmm..
Let me suggest some things for that:
Demon- You would need chains (Better rope) and some OtherWorld Essences to summon this whopper. It can be ridden, making it the ground counterpart of the majestic dragon. The demon can be your personal giant transport. Its twice as big as you and it runs very fast. It cannot go in the light, It needs to kill to stay its essence in the mortal world, it has weak defense and offense. A transport?
Spirit- A zombies forgotten side. The spirit is found from a zombie follower along with an OtherWorld essence. It will appear as a semi-transparent block. It can block other mobs but not the player. It cannot go in the light. It can also be destroyed unintentionally (creeper booms, skeleton arrows). It can hold any mob forcing to get through for only 20 seconds (cough, 20 seconds=summoned army attacks and kills it). The main goal of the spirit block is to be a sentry. When it sees a mob it will shout (indian ololololo shout) and will move and stare at the mob. Its stationary, never moves.
Jack-O-Man- jack-o-lanterns plus OtherWorld essences plus dead corpse equals Jack-O-Man! His head will just glow. It can shoot fireballs (weaker Ghast type fireball) and make fire appear from the ground. Perfect for a guardian. A good combo? Spirit screams, nearby Jack-O-Man will be alert and shoot fireballs at the mob. Sound OP? Well I guess so. The pumpkin head, ironically can be burnt. Light will not harm it though
Scarecrow- A use for the wheat! OtherWorld essence plus wheat plus sticks plus hoe equals Scarecrow! The scarecrow will guard your crops. If there will be animals nearby it will attack it. (fences best friend or replacement?) They will harvest when moving and attract the wheat like magnets when it is told to stay. Crop warrior FTW!
Cacti warrior- A use for cacti! OtherWorld essence plus cacti equals Cacti Warrior! The warrior is a living cacti. It shoots its barbs at the enemy. When its told to stay it will become a normal cacti but with eyes. Moving mode=ranged protectior, Stay mode=melee barrier.
Tweak, accept, decline it all you want. :biggrin.gif:

Actually, I'm starting to get into this now. Skip the lifespan limits.
- Each Necrotable can only have a limited number of summons.
- Necrotables may not be placed too close to each other (placing a Necrotable too close to another will destroy the previous one, but the minions attached to it will be transferred to the new one, provided they are in range, otherwise they will be destroyed)
-Grass and Leaves of trees will turn brown and eventually die out(leaving just logs and dirt that will instantly revert any attempts to till it) in a radius around a placed necrotable, which will allow the player to know the radius that they can place another table without breaking the first one. Nothing except mushrooms can be planted in this rnge either.
- Summoned minions may only travel beyond the range of their specific Necrotable for limited periods of time(a single night) before they either need to be back inside that range or will be destroyed regardless of daylight.
- Destroying the necrotable will destroy all minions created on it.
This would allow you to build up a semblance of an army, but if you wanted to use it all at once, you'd likely have at least part of the minions destroyed after that single night was over.
Last note: What I meant by "having it stabbed before being taken over" was more along the lines of just having a " has been stabbed" flag set so you can cast the spell with the tome, instead of an extra, one-purpose-item drop.

Oh, well, that works too.
I like where your headed with this. The necromanced monsters needing a recharge is a creative way to deal with the balancing issue. I think necromanced monsters should get longer periods of time when outside of their table though. It also would also be nice if they could recharge at any table. Might get complicated if you move bases, or if you have a big army with 20 identical zombies that need recharging, or if your exploring and want to set up camp somewhere with your one minion.
Also, spiders shouldn't be drained if they are an alternitive mount that you cant ride at night. Your opinions on this?

It's not really intended as a recharge, it's more like the area outside of the range of a minion's home Necrotable is like water to them, and they slowly run out of air. In order to take a breath they have to get back inside the range of their necrotable.
For balance purposes,(though it might require completely rethinking your summon list) you could have the summoning work on a mana pool manner; where each necrotable has say 8 points that can go towards total summons, and lowest level summons count as 1 point (summon 8 total) but can't go outside of the immediate range of the NecroTable. 2 tier count for 2 points(summon 4) and are summons that can move outside of the range for a single night, but have to come back to their own Necrotable each time. 3 tier cost 4 points,(summon 2) and they can move outside of the range of the necrotable for a single night, but can get sanctuary at ANY necrotable. Final tier is your highest summon which uses all 8 points to do, it's still limited to a single night away from sanctuary, but on top of being able to use any necrotable for sanctuary, it will also treat the immediate area around the player as sanctuary.
i don't know about the spiders. If you have to summon them, they shouldn't have to function the same as regular spiders. With what I just suggested here, I'm not even sure how spiders would fit into it.
Ah, but the only issue with that is that it simply forces your creatures into being guards. Makes all but final tier monsters useless for any out-of-base locations. If a player gets his hands on his first zombie, what can he possibly do with it? He can't explore that cave thats over there, 20 meters away. He cant scout at night. They should all get energy from all tables, with tiers getting longer return time.

First of all, you're restricting the "dead" effect of the Necrotable too much. I was thinking more like a 50 block radius. Second of all, you can move the Table by placing a new one within range. allowing 1st and second tier minions to be moved by limited degrees. And placing a new table outside of the range can allow 3rd tier minions extra range.
Finally, it can still be set so that 1st - 3rd tier can still use you as sanctuary, but if they're past their time limit and wander outside of your immediate vicinity (or if you go off on your own without waiting for them, or fall suddenly down a pit and can't get back to them) then they'll begin to take damage, whereas the highest tier has its time limit completely reset just by being near you.
Quote from Islacrusez »
However I'd be careful about the idea of the table causing damage to plantlife, both grass, crops and trees, as you open up a lot of griefing options. (Worse so would be the Tome causing similar effects)
That could be toned down so that only grass and leaves will die, but things can still grow. Trees that grow in this area will form brown leaves that wither after a day.
I already addressed your previous posts. The "using the player as sanctuary" assumed that the player was carrying a book with them. Though it is worth considering that the player needs to be holding the book in order to give orders and act as sanctuary on top of the stuff down here.

That would mean that you could have your undead army, but if you were actively army-ing with a low tier minions, you'd have to keep the book out at all times and not be able to do your regular adventuring stuff.

Ah, if the player acts as a temporary sanctuary, then it makes it more accessable to players just starting, and it would be better then.
@ Is Well, what about soul blocks. They could be used for that effect. Would it be justifiable for you grey, if the soul blocks acted as a neutral one, but necrotables only provide for the monsters they summon? Due to the fact that they are much harder to make.

If the dagger was gold, it would weak enough in terms of durability, and take some work to mine (you'd need to make an iron pickaxe to get it) but obsidian is a little rough, since you'd need a diamond pickaxe to get it. It can sometimes take a while before newer players manage to stumble onto enough diamond for the pickaxe, so making the dagger obsidian is a little too much. (unless it's a more powerful dagger, like the gold dagger breaks after only a few uses, but the obsidian one has the durability of diamond)

So basically, they can only spend so much time outside of the range of the necrotable before they take damage. After this point, if they are near a placed soulstone or the player actively holding the dark tome, they wouldn't take damage, but would begin taking damage again as soon as they were out of range of the soulstone or player w/dark tome. In order to stop taking damage, they would need to be brought back to their initial Necrotable.

Stage 1 - Basic Necromancy, most materials required to use this is found on earth.
Stage 2 - Advanced Necromancy, most materials required is found on earth and in the nether.

Am I getting that right?
Also, perhaps there could be different branches of Necromancy?
Some could specialize in skeletons, others zombies, etc, etc, etc, and for each different type of necromancy, a different ritual blade is needed? Or different blades kill different enemies better?
Pretty much, but if it's balanced right it could actually make for an enjoyable mod, instead of only being a "neat concept" that isn't fun to actually use at all.
Yes, we need to get a modder up in here. The idea is getting too complex to get in, and we need to work out balancing issues.
