dude, nice idea but probably not the most popular. this is more of an expansion/mod/hack game mode that only some people will play if it ever gets going
First you would probably appreciate it if I point out a typo in those graphic necromancer interface samples you created. You forgot the 'n' in necromancer.
*Facepalm* How didn't I notice that?
I am for anything that adds more RPG type content or possibilities to MC. That being said though I personally usually pick non-magic using classes in most RPGs I play as a personal preference. I prefer fighting classes, thieves, or charismatic/diplomatic/trader/parlay types for their maximum npc dialog/roleplay options. For some reason spell-casting just never captured my interest as much. In fact, I perfer non-fantasy RPGs though rare to find good ones like Fallout 1/2.
But there is no denying that fantasy RPGs wouldnt be such without magic users and they certainly add spice to the game - especially in fulfilling the role of the evil overload that must defeated before his minions destroy all that is good. The existence of necromancers would be one way to explain the existence of undead and other fowl beasts introduced by certain mods such as werewolves/wraiths/golems/etc.
This probably should be kept as an addon mod though and not made an official part of the game to allow other mods to offer an alternative explanation for the existence of undead not to mention the exclusively minecraftian creepers and Nether mobs. I like the versatility of Minecraft and the possibility of playing it in a completely different theme when one gets old. If the base game were to adopt to many fantasy style elements that would make it less adaptable to other themes like sci-fi, survival horror, or whatever else you can think of.
But.. it is a medieval fantasy game :tongue.gif:
Nah, I see your point. Not exactly going to just scrap the thread, but, yea.

I noticed that this thread has been up for a while now, but I don't think notch will implement necromancy since he is trying his hardest to keep the game so it is inoffensive to everybody who plays, necromancy is a sin in certain religions and some people just believe/feel that fiddling with death is immoral.
( Not me, who collects necromancer books and bones in his houses basement in elder scrolls :tongue.gif: )
However I think the fact that he is making it easier for the players to use mods now means that he is willing to let players implement their own idea's, so this necromancy wont become a reality unless you can find somebody who can code it for you, and make it a mod.
Goodluck with it :smile.gif:

Not a mod yet, but im starting to learn modding now. Will keep the idea a suggestion, but once the modding api gets into the game, I'll start playing around with it. I wouldn't expect it in-game for quite a while though..

Just realized something. If a summoned spider can climb while you ride it then you can generally go anywhere you want.
Yea, is why it takes a tome of mastery :tongue.gif:
Horse (if/when implemented) would generally be faster than the spider, and spider can't climb on rooves (and thus not over things sticking out of walls), so it'd be fine.
Quote from CreeperCommando »
My two cups of cents, everything are suggestions:
should be sometimes maingame implemented, although with 'a create new world option'. and balanced in into teamPvP's.
(^This could be done by implementing some time-consuming factors that limits you from both, say, create an army and mass-producing arrows, guns building fortifications or whatever you need to do in multiPvP... -> only one or two players in team can thus specialise)
Minions:
As I've come to understand, we're having a three tier system of minions? I'd think balancing could be done by these principles:
Tier one:
Weak, fragile, fast yet easy to produce.
These are your meatshields only good to group on smaller numbers or making the creepers have, errr... premature explosions...
The easy to get newbie help in the beginning.
Most resources goes into tomes and necrotables which makes it harder to build the army size than to resupply it.
Dies in sun.
Weaker than skellies and zombies one on one, maybe around .6 - .8 of mobs in fightingforce, dead tiles (see ncrotables section below) buffs them maybe to 1.1 - 1.2.
I'm thinking like the first one or three skellies you could get in diablo 2 as necro :smile.gif:
Tier two:
Harder to get and expensive but the longlivers + workhorses when used correctly.
Needs Necrotable for performing the arts, and maybe amulets too.
More of the variety here, like workers, archers, swords/pike -men -errr skellies, or so to say...
strength maybe around 1.2 fightingforce of zombie/skeleton-mobs, dead tiles buffs them maybe to 1.8 - 2.2.
Maybe Takes damage in sun?
Tier three:
You'll probably only be able to make one of these during one PvP game kind of things.
Stronger than a good player, something the enemies need to poop their pants and then organize a killsquad to kill kind of thing.
Few different with some good abilities, like meele champion that is immune to ranged damage(!), or
the undead necromancer which randomly (but slowly) summons his own smaller army with his own supplypool (for example first 3-5 tier ones then 2 tier twos) and so on.
Extremely hard to craft and probably also means a bit of dungeoning for materials.
Can easily hold its own when left alone, dead tiles GREATLY buffs them maybe a multiplying their fightingforce 2-3 times...
Necrotables:
Quote from Mr Torb »
C. A limit of summonables at once, perhaps added to by building more necromancer's tables (think starcraft's supply depot.).
Really like this idea. but if you tweak the supply system so that when you have a tome with you you get +1-5 supply or so and then every table adds additional +3-5 supplies (makes creating your first skelly easier, but harder to get an army for balancing)
There was an suggestion of creating dead ground around the tables where the skeletons bound to that specific table can 'breathe',easier programming would be to skip the bound to specific table part, sounds like scary programming solutioning ahead...
Instead of making them take damage by being away from necrotables, nerf the minions and instead give these deadgrounds a buff aura to ALL undead , even hostile (maybe even highlightspawning?), in terms of damage up, health/armor, a very slow health regen and resist to sunlight?
One thing to consider is IF the necrotables should convert grass and dirt tiles (maybe others like cobblestone + smoothstone?) into 'dead tiles' like the dirt into grass mechanic, in other words it slowly spreads up to a pretty large area albeit in a very, VERY slow rate which is a solution to grieving possibilities.
I'd like the deadgrounds to be able to generate like a black mist to create more of an atmosphere, maybe the mist decreases the lightlevels of the sun well enough to protect undeads inside it? May be both a hassle and problems with it though...
Sorry if rementioning anything, reading 19 pages seems a bit to much for me...
The tiers are more implied than anything. There is a clear cut cheap-but-weak type of summon, but from then on there's a variety of summons, who are slightly different in strength.
Dead areas buffing troops is interesting. I could throw a poll up and see what people think.
Lich sounds like a pretty cool summon, but may be exploitable (if you can summon more than one, or in multiplayer) 'less its like 1 basic zombie every 4 days. And if there's supply, the lich itself would take up about 10 of it itself.

Being squeamish and having OCD is not a great combination. Could it not be changed to "Essence" or something along those lines?
life energy? but anyway I would love to try this as a mod mabey, on my current world I forgot spiders can climb over walls so I got pwned, then creepers somehow got over also, a few skellies should stop them and free string.
summon idea, shadow hounds, giant dogs that you can ride, a little faster than spiders, can attack, needs tomb of mastery.

Squeemish Necromancer... lmao! Yeah I think Necromancy is supposed to be pretty damn gorey considering the fact that all of their magic has to do with animating corpses and the main ingredient for their casting recipes are flesh and blood. Even their parchment for scrolls is made of human or some other creature's skin. The cryptic passages scrawled in blood. Think Book of the Dead from the movie Evil Dead.
love the idea but there are changes i would like to make
the first tome i think is too hard for beginning players at 2 -maybe 2 and 1 ?
the tome of mastery seems like it should be hard to make, but at 2 string it's easy
rope should be added no matter what, it has too many uses otherwise
im not 100% sure what is meant by the blood meter mentioned by the bleak
by the way, i think LULZferBAKON's idea on page 8 is too great to resist, maybe increase the cooldown to 5 minutes or so?
Great, another person trying to turn Minecraft into what it's now, an RPG.
Seriously, every suggestion I see is either "Notch, add some stupid fetch quests to earn ingots so I don't have to mine them even though thats the point of the game!" or "I want to use magic and runes from complicated, hard to navigate menus" and "I want to upgrade all my weapons and put magical Orks blood on them to put me up to a level 52 dark crafter!"
I mean, come on guys. Minecraft isn't an RPG, it's a sandbox that is based around building and survival. But NOOOO, because it has swords and things so it must be a magical RPG with crappy copy and paste weapons, armor, and mobs!
I'm sorry for my epic rant, but I just had to get it out.

Hmm.. Not sure how the rant applies much to this thread though, excepting the fact that it involves magic. I mean:
The menu is as simple to navigate as any other crafting screen, less two additional slots are hard to grasp.
The game already has crappy copy and paste weapons, armor, and mobs; this suggestion doesn't change or add to that fact.
Necromancing isn't that common in rpg's. Sure, the bad guy might be some evil necromancer, but how many times have you got to make an evil fortress with undead minions?

Exactly! If Minecraftdude can rip apart a cubic meter of log into 4 cubic meters of planks with his bare hands, and press together diamond with a hammer, a saw, and some tongs, and have it not be magic, how can re-reanimating the dead in a world where skeletons occur naturally be magical? :]

Eh, the gold is to make it a bit harder for players to get it within the first 5 minutes of the game. Gold isn't exactly hard enough to get, though, where by the time you get gold Necrocraft is useless.
Yea, I botched the tome of mastery's recipe a little. It does need a blood tome in order to be made, though.
Heh, my train of thought exactly when I added it to the skeleton's crafting recipe.
The blood meter is an idea we tossed around in order to make Necrocrafting harder without making a completely random chance of failure. The blood meter fills up while you hold down the summon button. If you let it go at the red zone, the summon fails every time. In the yellow zone, it fails half the time, and in the green, it is a guaranteed success.
The blood meter would be somewhat fast of nature, so it would require a bit of skill to get that skeleton every time. The bleak would slow down the blood meter by a %, so it would be that much easier to summon things.
Yea, I'm thinking 'bout adding a creeper summon.
