I feel we are too limited in what are minecraft characters are capable of doing. For living in a vast world with growing potential we are considerably limited in our ability to interact with it. So I've come up with a few simple suggestions of things I'd like us to be able to do.
Crawl: Very simple. The players presses a button and the character falls to all fours. Similar to "sneaking" this will cause the players to move considerably slower, and not allow him/her to fall of ledges. Unlike sneaking, however, a player will not be able to use tools while crawling. But this action will require at least a 2x1 piece of flat space to execute and will allow the player to crawl through 1x1 openings.
Kneel: When the knee button is pressed the character fall to his/her knees (this would of course necessitate that our minecraftians get knees. lol) or maybe sits down completely. While kneeling/sitting the player would be little more than 1m tall, not be able to move, but would be able to use tools. This would allow a player to dig 1x1 tunnels that can be accessed by crawling.
Ledge grab: Our character is supposedly 1.7meters tall but is utterly incabable of getting over anything more than 1m high. In many instances it is either undesirable or you are unable to make a short enough ledge to jump up on to. The ledge grab would allow a player to jump and grab ledges of 2 or 3m high. From there the player would either be able to shuffle along the edge or pull him/herself up.
Run: It's been suggested a few times before but for the sake of completeness I'll list it here as well. Holding down a particular key would allow the player to move a little bit fast than the current walk speed. The would also manifest itself in being able to jump a little further after getting a running start. Right now it is possible to leap at most a two meter chasm with at most a 1m increase in height. With a running start a player should be able to clear 3 maybe 4 meters with no increase in height.
To simplify the clutter that so many new actions, and thus so many new keys, would create I suggest that "sneaking", kneeling, and crawling be combined into a single key. Pressing and holding the key causes you to sneak. Pressing it once and releasing it causes you to kneel. And pressing it twice in quick suggesion would cause you to fall to all fours to crawl. Pressing the key once while in either of the two latter states would return you to a full stand. The ledge grab could be combined with the jump key, as the two are interrelated. Holding down the jump key would activate the ledge grab function and pressing the forward key would cause the player to climb the ledge. Running too could be combined with it's most closely associated key. Pressing and holding the "W" key causes you to walk forward. Pressing it the key twice quickly and holding on the second press would cause you to run. Thusly four new functions can be given to the player without needing a single new key.
