Imagine walking into a cave and being confronted by a mob that would chase you until either you or it died, but you can't kill it. Even the creeper would fear it. I don't think this has been suggested before, as when i looked up 'troll' i only got people whinging about trollers XD. Which is fair enough imo.
I think it would be awesome to have a large-ish mob (roughly 4 blocks high, 3 wide) that only spawns in caves. It would be very hostile, charging after you on sight. It would treat blocks like other mobs treat steps, meaning it would not be slowed by slopes and tunnels unless a 2 block increase/decrease was encountered. Then it would jump.
*Massive damage. 2 hits without armour and your done. Maybe 3-4 with armour.
*Impervious to damage. No matter what you hit it with you can't kill it. Because of it's stony complexion explosions don;t effect it. It's immune to lava too.
*Fortunately slow, about the same as a zombie.
*Only way you would know its nearby would be the sound of falling stones and the occasional grunt.
The only way you could destroy this Troll would be to lure it outside. Unlike zombies and skeletons, it wouldn't burn in sunlight. Instead it would turn to stone, which can then be harvested like any other stone block. There would be a chance for a diamond or redstone drop too.
Let me know what you think. This is a general idea, not a fully fleshed out concept yet.
well it's not invincible, you just can't personally damage it. Its not invincible, and i must admit explosive and lava invulnerablity is a bit overkill. But all current mobs are vulnerable to players, and I (and i would suggest alot of others) don't really want more of the same. I want a challenge when i face a beast, all of Minecraft's mobs can be killed in the same way. Swipe, move, swipe, move. And if you have a bow, it's even easier.
I agree that it SHOULD NOT only take damage from the sun... A player should be able to defend him or her self, not have to just run for dear life... Make it difficult, yes, but don't make it impossible...
Also, I've ALWAYS been of the opinion that trolls should turn to stone in the sunlight also, but that they ought to revert back to troll under moon light...
I think the mob would have potential, but like every other concept it needs to be beat around a bit to get all of the kinks worked out. ^-^
Well every concept has kinks. Ill definitly admit that haha.
What if, it took double the damage of a stone block. HOWEVER this could vary depending on the tool being used.
Hence, diamond pickaxes are very effective against it, but shovels are not.
IDK, but the sun=stone is staying. It's the core concept of the Troll. Reverting under moonlight may be alright.
So instead of using a sword you use an pick. How different.
Well what i want to achieve is something different, far different to simply a different tool. There are community expectations that have to be met as well as good mob design principals. If you have nothing positive to contribute, don't bother writing anything. It seems pretty bloody sarcastic.
Troll idea:
1. Turns to stone under sunlight.
2. Reverts back to normal troll if still intact under moonlight.
3. Only damage-able by fire, diamond pickaxes, TNT explosions, and sunlight.
4. Rare drops. (Clubs for non-lethal damage?)
5. Spawns from bedrock to 10 blocks above the lava level.
6. Spawns everywhere in hell.

agreed. however, as far as spawning is concrened, I'd be more inclined to have it spawn higher near the surface, so that there was a higher chance of having sunlight nearby as well as at the bedrock, where the chance of you having a Diamond PA is more likely. If they are always at the bottom, at what point will the troll come in contact with sunlight?
Im not sure about invulnerablity. I would like to be able to use a sword on it. If it looks like Jsatt suggests, it could be a sort of boss that has long range, aoe attacks, thus making it a big challenge (and something that you wouldn't want to encounter on your splunking trip), but also something that if you are good enough with your blade, you can handle. An invincible mob would be as annoying as an invisable creeper.

~ I've thought about the phrase 'Money is the root of all evil' and I have to disagree. Evil isn't dependant on an object. I say that want is the root of all evil.

what will?
we all know that getting blasted into a volcano by a creeper is not nice
