Most of the monsters in minecraft are stereotypical. I was thinking one day about what original new mob could be added, and it hit me: trobs.
Trobs would be distantly related to numerous species, most notably the troll and goblin, hence the name trob. They would be an indigenous form of life that would live in small burrows, mainly in grassy, hilly regions, but also in more wooded areas. They would spawn in light levels a bit below of sunlight, up to sunlight level.
So, how would they act?
They would be a species with less intelligence than either a goblin or a troll, but perhaps mildly more intelligent than a zombie. They would be a neutral mob that wanders around slightly shaded regions, and would not attack unless provoked. When you kill one, there is a chance that you will alert other trobs in the area, who will then organize a hunting party to attack you (As suggested by shodex). You will also aggro all the trobs in the immidiate vincity.
How does this add to the game?
Eh. It would be nice to be walking through a forest and have them aimlessly walking about. Plus, the addition of a new mob is always neat.
What would be my incentive to kill them?
Seeing as they are related to semi-intelligent species, they might have picked up something on their travels.
Here's the loot table:
35% Nothing
15% Stick (can be seen equipped in trob's hand)
10% Pot/Pan (can be seen worn as a helmet on the trob.)(smeltable into iron)
10% Clay/Brick
5% Gold Watch (Now smeltable into gold)
5% Apple
5% String
5% (Random low value object worn on head. Such as sapling, bowl, etc.)
5% Random Wooden/Stone Tool (Anything that isn't a sword, wooden tools more common)
4.5% Iron bar
0.5% Diamond
Anything else they do?
Yes. Smarter mobs have a dislike of trobs. Trobs have a knack of angering anything they get in the path of, either by mindlessly bumping into them, or intentionally provoking their wrath. Skeletons, and (if implemented) goblins, as well as anything of similar intelligence will attack them, and vice versa. It would be interesting if spiders hunted them too. Though, monsters like creepers, zombies, ect. wont care about trobs in the vincity. Having a trob in the area wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing.
Also, they wear pots and pans and buckets as armor, and wield clubs. As suggested by multiple people. Only occasionally though, trobs only wear armor in the first place because they though it looked shiny/odd, and few are proactive enough to use anything as a weapon, besides thrown rocks and sticks/random tools.
Well?

Id imagine that they would be fine to bump into normally, but when aggro'd, they would attack you like a zombie. Though, if they had bows, that would make for an interesting fight, and worth the iron they have a chance of dropping. (perhaps bows could be used with a prefixed-trob?)
They would have the health of a sheep, or cow. So you get the picture of how difficult (or in this case, how easy) it is to kill them.

The only issue with them using bows, though, would be that if they were in groups, they would become a major pain. Its also contridictory to me saying that trobs are barely smarter than zombies.

Maybe have 2 kind of Trobs? A melee Trob, using a club and a ranger Trob throwing rocks? For a bit of variety. And perhaps they could build homes? Since they're not very bright, mud huts and caves? If you attack a Trob near a Trob Village, theres a chance they'll sound an alarm and send out a hunting party.

That sounds good. And I like the idea of rock throwing trobs. Sounds... proper, for trobs. Though I don't see trobs being smart enough to orginize hunting parties. That kind of thing could be left to goblins. They could all attack you if they see you murder one of their friends though.

I would hope that im smarter than an average zombie :biggrin.gif:
It would be an interesting gameplay mechanic, being able to call the wrath of the trob onto myself. So I'll add it to the original post. Though i figured the red moon thing was kinda mystical, seeing as zombies don't usually group together.

What does it bear similarities to? I drew it up in 15 minutes from scratch D:
Edit: Though i do agree that it might be a little generic of a model. Ima make some revised ones, i guess...

It kinda looks like a guy made of sand. I think he was referring, not so much to it looking a lot like an existing mob, but just the fact that it has no... art to it, for lack of a better word. It just looks like, well... a guy made of sand.
I've got no beef with some neutral mobs that only pick on you if you pick on them. How would neutral mobs like this work in peaceful, would they just not appear, or vanish as soon as you anger them, or appear as normal and hey-that's-not-very-peaceful-stop-bashing-my-head-in-please?
EDIT: Since zombie pig-men exist now, my last question has been answered.

Ah i see. Ill try to add some color to the "normal" trob, and make a new picture for the rock throwing one.
As for them being in peaceful, thats a good question. Id have it where either they don't attack you in peaceful, or not appear.

They look like something that would hide in sand.
I'd imagine people breaking sand blocks for glass and have these randomly pop out and start screaming like a mandragora or something.
Woo, trobs. Do you mind if I use this idea in a game?
Anyway, great ida. Although they look more like sand creatures than forest ones.
Dont mind at all. You can use it in any game you like. And I've got a couple new concept models that ima edit in, you guys tell me what you prefer.

i'd probly recommend having the melee and ranged trobs the same color and have no distinction between them until provoked when they would draw their weapons if at all. that way it's a gamble to attack them in groups. and have them randomly drop resources such as, common: Iron, Uncommon: Gold, Rare: diamond. this way we would be very tempted to attack them due to the low possibility of a diamond or decent chance of gold, but we'd also be very hesitant because all the trobs in the area could potentially be rock throwers and would hurt like hell. so the possibility that you have 5 rock throwing trobs and may only get iron would deter you, or they could all be melee trobs and one might have a diamond. that way it kind of adds some suspencence and a gamble type effect to the game.
Also if more intellegent creatures were added such as goblins then have them move a little bit faster, have better drop rates, and possibly but unlikely, increase the chance of the majority that spawn to be ranged.

"The more people i kill, the better the chance i have of getting the right one." -Goblin Assassin-
Yea, they could be carrying clubs, rocks to throw, or some random item. Seems right, for trobs. Though iron armor is kinda high tech for them. Maybe you could throw iron armor at one and it would put it on, but trobs are far too stupid to make iron armor to wear.
@ snooch
Yea, i was saying in the original post that they could drop pots and pans and random junk that you smelt into iron. That would be more fitting than them carrying random ingots of iron. They could also drop a golden watch or something to smelt into gold, and I would like a 0.1 percent chance to get a diamond from a trob.
If anything though, you would have to balance the class table with a good possibility to get a stick, or string, or rock or something, so they dont become the leading source to get iron.
Edit: By the way, a few posts up i had some new example models for trobs, tell meh which one you like better, or if you like the original one better.

I suppose that a small fraction of them could be wearing a random peice of armor or something, which would imply that they found it. Could be the only way to get chainmail?
Edit: But they are supposed to lack intelligence, not replace goblins and hob-goblins.

and yes, agree with katana, they look like sand monsters... maybe they could have streaks of the biome they are in?
green streak = forrest
yellow streak = desert
So they all look the same sorta, but they have differences according to biome (which adds a bit of camouflage)
