ok this idea came to me and there doesn't seem to be any offical threads about it.
(please correct me if I am wrong)
So I think a gappling hook would make a excellent addation to minecraft. I think it would be useful when spelunking and certainly a time saver. I think the finished product would hace be crafted in seperate parts amd then added together.
First one would have to make the hook which would be crafted like so
[] []
[] []
This would yield the hook on the end.
Rope would also have to be made like so
[]
[]
[]
= string
Rope could be sed for other things but this is talking about grapling hooks.
after both of these things are crafted they would have to be crafted together like so:
[] []
[] []
[] []
= Hook
= Rope
This hook could be flung 6 meters in any direction (6 blocks) and would fly similarly to arrows. (In an arch) When the hook latches the users would right click to draw him/herself towards the hook. The hook would only latch onto certain things like stone or dirt. if it doesn't latch right clicking would simply draw the hook back by the rope. This could also be used to repel down by latching the hook at the top of a click and walking off the side. The player woud descend slowly like they were on a ladder until they reached then end of the rope. Form there they could either climb back up or drop from the hook. Ther possibly could be some way to make it longer but I think this would be nice to see in mine craft. It woulld certainly add an interesting element to combat if used properly.
Sounds like a pretty good idea to me. I joined an SMP server where one of the admins had actually coded these and added it to your inventory. It was pretty useful to have around.
That's what I am saying it would be nice to be able to save the durability onmy pickaxe for actual mining rather then just making stairs to get down or up a steep cliff.
While I like the idea... this has probably been suggested a thousand times.

~ I've thought about the phrase 'Money is the root of all evil' and I have to disagree. Evil isn't dependant on an object. I say that want is the root of all evil.
So many threads about this. I suggest people linger around the forums before posting. But i do appreciate at least trying to search.
I personally would not like to have a grappling hook. I just cant see it as being part of the Minecraft experience. Notch however has mentioned he might actually one day consider adding something like support ropes to do things like lower down into a cave. But i dont really like the idea
For the most part, I agree with Cyrix (as much as I always hate to say that). Please don't post ideas that already have about thirty threads dedicated to them. Maybe a second, third, or even a fourth thread about something might be okay, if the idea varies, but not a 30th or so clone. I also think that a grappling hook doesn't fit the game.
(My disagreement: I want ropes.)

The rope idea I like, I'd love to be able to lower myself down steep drops. Grapple hooks i would prefer not to have, but i suppose Notch could make anything nice.
I just don't like when there is an Option 2 that is so much easier than an Option 1, resulting in making Option 1 Obsolete.

On second thought..that would be pretty funny.
"What am I latched onto here? OH SHI!*
Like I said a quirky little tool that would prove to be useful when spelunking.

Apologies
Ropes would be useful and serve a similar purpose.
