Gold. Quite possibly the least useful material in Minecraft. Zero durability, not used for a currency, just a decoration. And it's relatively rare. Can this material ever be used in the future??
GPS: We've all been there. "where am i? this mountain looks the same." our current compass' point to our spawn. not to home. nor what there is around us. if gold was used as the center of this device (expensive amount too) and diamond used as the antenna while finally applying redstone dust into the mix, WHAPAM! GPS. this little baby should only show a small amount of land in a corner of the hud. Maybe something similar to Fall-out? Heres a catch if you need one. if you go in a cave, you lose signal.
Compass: the current one points to spawn. what if you could make a more upgraded version of it? take gold and just put it as the "North" of the compass' current build. You can have two Pointer's, one made of redstone, the other of gold.
Self powered cart: i know there are mods out there to keep the cart going. Boosters are a glitch possibly to be fixed in the future. If we could make it so that gold could be used to create an "engine" or a control for the cart, lez do it. if that seems a wee bit too easy, why not make it necessary for the tracks to be electrocuted. a golden power generator needed to allow flow of electricity to about 20 tracks.
Dungeon Detector: Hear the noises but cant figure it out? do you need to just go on a dungeon raid? while walking, using gold within the contraption, the device will make a small beeping noise that gets more frequent as you get closer. no pointer on this one though, just the beep.
My main idea here is to use gold as a semiconductor in future equipment. It's rare, so running around with these items is dangerous. if you have suggestions as to what should be used for tech,or you feel some of the items would cause more harm than good, PLEASE help the community(and notch) and comment below. Remember: your opinion matters.
Extended Compasses idea might cover some of what you're looking for. I consider GPS and "Thing" detectors to be overpowered though.
And you can build powered carts by crafting a furnace with a minecart. I don't know if they really work properly though, but if the booster carts is a glitch that gets fixed, it's almost going to have to fix any glitches that might be messing up the powered minecart from working at the same time, otherwise people are just going to be pissed.
The powered minecart is weak. when used, it can only move at about half of the speed you walk. you'd might as well be pushing your load. the idea is to make it so you travel faster, but even then expensively.
GPS i was thinking to be incredibly limited. it only would show elevation, and relative location. overpowered? it's quite possible, but at the same time, if there is no feeling of progression within the game, the player becomes bored quickly. the GPS,i was thinking, could be used to sort of encourage the player to move outward.
"thing" detector. i see how that can become a problem. it would, if used effectively, destroy the very part of the game that keeps it rolling. it eliminates the fear of the dungeons, allowing the player to decide to destroy or evade.
im hoping to keep the gps idea alive though because if created properly, it could be used to help navigate without the use of cartograph, allowing ingame map making thus giving the player liberty from possibly unnecessary program downloads. don't get me wrong, i love cartograph. i've created civil maps usable on my community's server. in a personal world though, or a world not created from scratch by self, one can get lost quickly.
I like the idea of a GPS. Show me x,y coordinates relative to spawn (where spawn is 0,0). Maybe even +/-Z for depth/height? A notebook would make paper more useful, then you could mark GPS points with notes in your notebook.

You didn't put any redstone dust in it.
