So it's an actual stun or special move then. Okay, an actual knockback would not be useful against a spider, but a stun or slow down is since they would be much more slower, remember you can't outrun spiders, damn rapists.
Yeah, the idea being it will help with certain mobs, like spiders, keeping them from jumping at your face. That combined with more monsters, which as we know is planned, including some that hopefully the shield won't work as well against, that might ignore it, where using a bow might be the ideal way to kill them.
Also, I didn't remember having a hard time running away from spiders, so I tested it, and got away pretty easily. It was on normal, I assume their speed doesn't change based on difficulty though.
Everytime I try to run away from a spider it catches up to me...
Then again I haven't been able to play as much as I used to anymore... (damn college)
Spiders can move a little faster than the player if they decide to do one of their long jump things.
Atainted's shield is pretty much exactly what I've described, except of course for adding the shield bash thing. I'm not entirely opposed to the shield bash, as long as ALL it did was stun (no damage) Perhaps it could be something that only Full Shields could do, and that it cost double durability. Small Shields shouldn't have that type of functionality.

Ah, I guess I just get lucky and they don't jump as much for me.
As for the shields, I imagine all shield ideas are pretty similar,(if not essentially identical) I just mainly had to explain it to lead into the bash, which would work great the way you describe imo.
@GreyAcumen
Agreed
Shields can do the stun but it does no damage and it greatly damages durability, because well using a shield to hit someone isn't really smart now is it?
And small shields shouldn't be able to do this, also I'm pretty sure I posted in one of your threads, or at least voted.
Actually, using your shield to hit your opponent is pretty basic technique, the rough equivalent of a shoulder check. It's just generally when you have a shield, you'll also have a melee weapon to go with it that would be even MORE effective.
And yeah, you posted in my 2x2 thread, but only said "shields only" and never got back to me about what issues you had with the other ideas.
You seem to be trying to turn this into a WoW clone. I think it's fine the way it is; the monsters are more oriented towards the building aspec tof the game. Creepers are meant to smash the player's stuff, not as a combat mob, etc.
WOW clone?
WOW is turn based faggotry, I hate WOW, it has no gameplay whatsoever and like most RPGS out there it's just grinding. How is implementing a roll/dodge manuever, or a shield that's activated by pressing the sneak button turning this into wow?
@atainted
I don't think so, try it out yourself, plus as previously mentioned it would spice up combat a bit y allowing players to be much more stealthy, or it can just help them run away WITHOUT having to leave a ladder behind or always be packing them.
I was talking to the first post, actually. I just forgot to hit the submit button and then finally hit it an hour later.

This man really is a genius. Never have i seen such a clear and well written forum post.
Shield bash could knock up a little and push without putting the monster into red invulnerability. This would make the monster immobile (because they are in the air) and vulnerable to attack if you step forward and slash them. This way, there wouldn't need to be a new stun mechanic. This is just working around the red invulnerability though.
Also, a flying monster would have to be incredibly slow to not be able to catch up with someone trying to climb a steep slope. Another good reason for movement enhancement (allows flying monsters to move at a reasonable pace).
As for ledge grabbing, I like the ladder technique (will try this out) although ladders are expensive. 1.25/log, 5-7.5 per tree, that's a lot of trees. How about climbing gloves? It would allow you to climb walls as if there was a ladder there. All this does is provide the same movement as ladder spamming while not requiring a lot of ladders. It Would have durability that drains fairly fast making ladders a better option for frequently traveled areas. I want to stress that this would not add anything new to the game, it would only making climbing walls more accessible resource wise.
@abstractor
He's for combat improvement, but he's afraid of it getting out of control and denaturing minecraft, reason why he doesn't like the ledge clambering idea. He thinks it will bring in heavy platforming for some reason, thus changing this game's feel. TBH I don't think so, infact as I told him it would open up new possibilities with people building obstacle courses, or even better, TEMPLE OF DOOMS, and other stuff aside from that like allowing for more indirect approaches during combat and improved exploration.
You do realize that the hand pickaxe renders normal pickaxes and hoes for that matter obsolete, right? Why? Because it costs half the wood to make, and can be made in your inventory craftbox, meaning you will only need handles when you go down to mine things like stone.
If you want a detailed explanation about the weaknesses of the handpick, ask about it in that thread.
Everyone is suggesting possible shield uses, wait till the AI get's upgraded, then you may rethink your perspective on dynamic combat and how much the shield can do.
Of course these ideas are based on the current AI. Trying to speculate about what the AI MIGHT be changed to(if changed at all), and then getting behind an idea on those assumptions is retarded. I always craft my ideas so that they would work with what exists NOW, and if improvements are made to AI, then improvements can still be built on top of that base idea.
I personally think weapon type tools, should have their own respective slot for hotkey purposes, it would make switching to weapons in a rush a lot easier and less confusing. It would make sense as well because the shield would also need it's own personal slot.
I've considered this myself, but really, it would be just as simple to remember that 1-3 hotkeys are right above your fingertips, and just always place your weapon of choice in one of those slots. An auto-equip tool on drop/break would be more useful, since you wouldn't have to scramble to pick a new slot when your sword broke in the middle of combat and it would make the other tools more streamlined to use as well
I'm getting mixed readings from you, because at one point you seem to be against combat improvement and then you're for it. You even have a creepers vs. humans mode idea, and don't realize that poor combat will result in the mode sucking, even more because humans can't place blocks. I loled at the creeper tower.
Creepers vs Humans is a Multiplayer Mode idea that is specifically based around attacking each other. It is not the base game that would also mess around with how the single player game handles. It would be an optional server scripted rule set that you would join to play that game. Since one team is limited to being a pure 1 move only kamikaze creature, this needs balanced, and the only way to do that is to restrict humans from placing blocks, but they can still dig pits and carve into mountains and such.
Again, this really would be better discussed in that thread, and not here, but it does at least have to do with combat. And I'm glad you like, or at least were amused by the creeper tower idea, I thought it was a particular stroke of genius for giving creepers a constructive way to use an otherwise completely destructive ability.
Meh. Too much confusing. I want minecraft simple. Playable. You do this, next thing we'll have Stats and skills. I don't feel like increasing my Dexterity or learning "lick wounds".

Proudly wanting Classic Alpha to truly become Survival Alpha. Mobs killing blocks, ridiculously powerful beasts, and insanely unfair gameplay. Classic Alpha is boring. I want SURVIVAL alpha! Eh? Eh? ***** all you want.
I think you need to play some Zombie survival or something, if you think movement is tricky.
You can already make 2 block jumps, I don't see why it needs to be higher. Personally that would be pretty annoying, then I have to make the ceiling 4 blocks above the floor (33% more mining).

Yo dawg, I heard you like autism, so we put simple in yo autism while you autism in yo simple autistic simulator of autism, dawg.
You have 35 posts already on this thread that is not even a suggestion thread any longer. Your attitude all around is not appreciated by many in here, as I'm sure I can speak for themselves on that matter.
Mocking anyone that has a different opinion than yourself makes you a troll. An annoying one at that, given that you are given 35 opportunities to behave and in page 6 still are making a spectacle of yourself. I suggest you STFU and move somewhere else, if this is the best you can do anytime someone has something to say you don't agree with.

I was trying to think of a signature and this is what came up.
I have to agree. The only reason I haven't reported abstractor for trolling is because he's a useful sounding board for explaining the logical reasoning behind my stances on the spirit of minecraft, mostly just by refuting his illogical reasoning.
@Abstractor,
Chillax bro, this is not 4chan, I know it's frustrating but this is a forum bro, civility here is a priority because it makes you stand out much more than being blunt. Sure many of the kids here like to jump on a band wagon and even resort to insults but guess what? Unlike 4chan MODS do do their work here, so relax state your opinions and don't mind dumbasses like Sabata2 who think they're too good for everybody.
Also
@Gorman
Abstractor made an error, ITT we were proposing for a clambering move that lets you hang off ledges and climb upto things that are 2 blocks high, not an actual double jump, the op was proposing that but the topic has verily changed already to something else.

How is a shield block, and rolling dodge too confusing? Not only that but no one was proposing that aside from the OP, but we've long moved on from that onto something else.
Infact the thread is more or less a debate on how complicated Minecraft combat should be. Too simple and we get the broken combat we get right now with Skeletons being the only fun monster to battle, to complicated and we could end up with an adventure game.

Aww how cute. I haven't said anything substantial in this thread and yet I'm singled out as one of the "bad guys" of this thread.
