That's right, fellow Minecraftians. Professor Hawke is at it again, but other than try to help Minecraftia like I did when I invented the Patented Gravity-Defying Device, I aim to hinder rather than help. You see, I have many devious plots for our precious mines, including some that would make you think twice before even entering a cave! This, my friends, is one of the few Anti-Suggestions that have ever been made, so you had best stop here if you wish to remain naïve to the dangers which lurk within the Darkness.
HORROR NUMBER ONE
Gas (Toxic/Flammable) and Coal Dust
It is a part of mining, even today. Gas, trapped within pockets of air and left to brew for thousands of years, simmers in the heat of the Earth. When one of these pockets is pierced (by a pick, for example), the gasses escape into the surrounding cavern, wreaking havoc on miners and their mines. The most dangerous of these gasses are the Toxic and Flammable gasses.
TOXIC GASSES
Toxic Gas appears as a dense, green cloud that spills out of a punctured pocket. When inhaled, this gas causes the player to suffer continuous "Suffocation Damage" (like what you would experience while under water) until they either escape to fresh air (I.E. the Surface) or part from this Earth ("Die," in layman's terms). Truly a sinister plot, no? But wait, it gets even worse from here on.
FLAMMABLE GASSES
If you thought Toxic Gas was bad, prepare for a shock. Flammable Gas appear in large pockets, much like Toxic Gas. HOWEVER, these pockets are larger and hold more gas. When these are pierced, a transparent, grayish gas seeps from the hole and fill most of the cavern. In this state it is somewhat harmless, but if it makes contact with an open flame or explosion (Torches, TNT, Creepers, et cetera), it has the potential of creating a firestorm hot enough to cook (or severely singe) anything and everything in its path! Miners beware, for these Gasses could be coming to a cave near you.
COAL DUST (Kudos to Enduar)
'Tis a mundane chore, mining coal. So easy, anyone can do it. However, I plan on turning this seemingly harmless mineral into a lethal killer. When one mines Coal, there will inevitably be Coal Dust. While it is harmless in small quantities, it can be lethal in lager concentrations. All it takes is an open flame (A Torch, for example), and an entire mine will be engulfed in flames. Coal Dust appears as a black, semi-transparent cloud. Vents must be constructed in order to funnel the gas out of the cave, lest a Minecraftian risk a Coal fire.
-----
HORROR NUMBER TWO
THE MIMIC
Be prepared for a real fight (and fright!) if you cross paths with the Mimic, for it will surely make short work of even the most experienced Minecraftian! The Mimic is a sinister creature, indeed, for it disguises itself as a simple Chest. Commonly found within Dungeons, these nasty little beasties will lie in wait, remaining almost perfectly still (aside from the occasional shudder), waiting for an unsuspecting adventurer to come along and touch it (right-click).
Once alerted, the seemingly innocent Chest will sprout three, spidery legs and the lid will open to reveal a row of teeth as sharp as a Diamond Blade. If the appearance alone was not enough, the creature has a very nasty bite (3.5 Hearts!) and an equal bark, for it will also emit shrieking sounds that echo through the caverns and alert all other Mobs within a 60-Block radius. The little blackguards are fast, too, making it impossible to run from them (though they're not the best jumpers).
The Mimic has its fair share of disadvantages, though. As stated above, it cannot jump very high. It is also very weak, for one can defeat it in two swings of a Stone sword. It will also shudder when inactive (a dead giveaway for the observant Minecraftian), also stated above. Lastly, it cannot swim at all and will sink like a stone due to the weight of the Chest it wears for camouflage and protection. Once killed, a Minecraftian can choose to take its Chest, plus most of the contents the Chest had before the Mimic took-up residence.
So there you have it. A few new horrors that could possibly make their way into Minecraftia. Miners beware! Please, leave all comments, critique and suggestions below. I shall take note of any reasonable suggestions made by other users.
"Toxic gas shouldn't deal damage, but rather have you lose oxygen like you were drowning, just at a reduced rate, since there is SOME air there." -Varkarrus
-sets up a redstone wire to activate a single TNT, detonating an entire cave system for quick and easy clearance of soft materials and mobs- -Enduar, for pointing-out a severe flaw in the Flammable Gasses concept.
"I'd like to see large deposits of coal (and mining them) become dangerous if in large quantities, becoming slightly toxic, or even explosive (As our professor here so accurately stated, more of a burn, however, not a high-velocity explosion like TNT)." -Enduar, for reminding me of Coal dust.
I really like these ideas, though I just suggest 2 changes
Toxic gas shouldn't deal damage, but rather have you lose oxygen like you were drowning, just at a reduced rate, since there is SOME air there.
Mimics should have slightly more health, or only be able to take damage after they reveal themselves, because experienced minecrafters would start swinging their sword at every chest they see.

Other than that, these ideas are good, proper additions to the minecraft atmosphere. It might be neat to introduce things like steam vents as well (on the topic of gasses) to both limit visibility in an area as well as create an obstacle, eh? Only found near lava, of course.

Now that you bring that up, I might turn the "explosion" of Flammable Gasses into more of a "Burn." Yes, there would be minor structural damage, but it would cook whatever is in there, rather than blow it up. Thank you for bringing this to my attention, good sir!
I assume that the gases would be green and naturally rise upward. I don't think that the poisonous gas would enhance gameplay but the flammable one would cool.
Right now, mining at the top of the map (in a mountain) or at the bottom of it near bedrock has few differences (Save the possibility of slimes and Lava). With the next update, light will have a greater factor, which is good to make the lower areas of the map actually mean something regarding danger, but natural barriers would make this more dynamic and creative.
Also, bringing in proper mining techniques into the game that are pseudo realistic (like having to vent your caverns of toxic or hazardous fumes) would make a good addition to change up the same-'ole digging.
I'd like to see large deposits of coal (and mining them) become dangerous if in large quantities, becoming slightly toxic, or even explosive (As our professor here so accurately stated, more of a burn, however, not a high-velocity explosion like TNT).

An excellent idea, sir! It has been scientifically proven that Coal dust can be up to five times more explosive than Black Powder, which is why fires in Coal mines are so deadly. I shall take your idea into consideration.
While I normally detest "Bumping," I see no other choice for this thread.
Yes, Bomber. "Mimics" have been used in almost every "fantasy"-based game to date; however, I believe that the "Mimic" is a fitting enemy to add to the list of Minecraft Mobs.

But yes. I really like these ideas.
I like your thinking. I'll put that in the "Noted Suggestions" area.
The fact that Mimics can only take damage after revealing themselves was one of my original ideas. I'll flesh that out a bit.

Maybe 64?
A fact that was starting to bother me, as well. I shall amend this at once!
