So what Minecraft is missing right now is a mob that is dedicated to scaring you. Something you don't want to be attacked by because you know it'll be freaky encounter, even if it isn't deadly. So I was getting a glass of orange juice and I thought of a sneaky spider-like mob that could stick to walls and roofs, not at all inspired by the spider that fell on my head while I was looking for cookies. It would try to stay in dark areas (even if there are torches nearby, it'll scuttle around in the dark patches). It would hiss at you, and best of all, it'd make a nice little shriek and drop on your head if you walked under it. Now I'm usually not a fan of getting scared, but I dunno, sounds like it might be fun.

Here are some numerical statistics. Size: 1x1x1 Health: No more than two sword slashes with an iron stone sword. It's not meant to be a powerhouse, more of a kamikaze. Damage: Drop on head maneuver is a two-heart attack, after that it either retreats or attacks with .5 heart hits. Behavior: Hostile. Stays exclusively in caves, even at night it won't leave them. Will stay out of range of the player as long as possible, finding darkness and standing still until the player gets near. When the player gets too close, it'll scuttle away extremely fast, until it either finds another dark patch to wait in, or it can find a roof near the player. It'll hiss at you while it's idle. It's red eyes glow in the dark for a couple seconds before fading. This happens randomly, not constantly. When you're traveling down tunnels, you might just see a couple of eyes staring at you in the distance, then fade.
UPDATE: People seem to like the idea of these being able to tunnel. Now, as passive behavior this is a little useless, but lets say it can't find an escape route that leads to darkness, it can tunnel into a dirt wall if it has to. They also like to spawn in 1x1 caves.
UPDATE: This needs some clarification. This is not a zombie clone mob that just lives in caves. In fact, this mob has completely different behavior than ANY OTHER MOB IN THE GAME. It is an ambush predator. It hides, and it waits, it runs, it attacks and it retreats. It sticks to the shadows. Its resemblance to the spider is aesthetic only, it shares no other traits.
UPDATE AGAIN: This behavior COULD be applied to the spider, but its really impractical to do so. Most of what you see above would impair the spider's ability to be a skeleton mount.
Seems like it might be a fun little addition to caves.
Hm..
I these remind me of the spiders on this game called "Spelunky" where if you walked under them they would drop down and follow you until you killed them or escaped..
This things could be.. worse than creepers in caves..
heh when I first read the title I thought you meant like a small creature that has the ability to tunnel through certain blocks. I support creatures though that drop from the ceiling. Should make things more creepy.

:SSSS:? I usually **** my pants when I meet a Creeper deep underground.
Yea, creepers can be scary. But that's not their purpose. In my experience, the creeper is there to make you so frustrated at the game you throw your monitor out the window.

rather than create an entirely new creature for this, I'd just like to see this tactic used by the spiders that already exist in the game.
Yea, this is an option, but I still like the idea of a dedicated cave creature, rather than a different version of a mob that you see anywhere. Also, spiders are rather slow, large, and don't make many noises. So once you modify the creature to fit the new criteria, its basically a new creature anyways.

I like this idea, although I think the Tunnel Mites should have 3 HP (1 shot Iron Sword) since they are small and crunchy... mmmm... tasty...
Yea, I still haven't got the whole sword-slash-to-health ratio figured out... 2 slashes with a stone sword, since I want them to be able to land an attack, but hopefully die soon after.
Amazing creatures. Notch has said that he hopes to make the game very easily moddable, so even after he stops working on it, more and more things will be released.
My suggestions for your next creatures:
1. Some type of lizard enemy. Comes out even during the day.
2. A small flying pterodactyl-like thing, peaceful, you hunt it for food and feathers, maybe you can raise one.
I'd like to see that the way it works is that it won't spawn in areas that are even dimly lit, as well that the areas must have a non-transparent block horizontally attached to other ones somewhere above it.
Also, 1x1x1 sneaking through your windows = yus
Assuming that it can jump really high, I'd say it'd be cool for it to eat through planks, dirt, leaves, and cotton to get at the player, but not stone or anything stronger.
EDIT:
My dirt and wood home will no longer be safe.
DIRT MITES WILL BITE ME IN MY SLEEP
I approve of the idea. However, as a personal opinion, I think the model looks too similar to the spider.
Would it be possible to colour it a bit differently? I was thinking of giving it a dark purplish hue.
Yea, I just made it brown for lack of a better idea. A more purple-ish or blue-ish hue sounds better, I'll check it out.

Would it eat through dirt like real mites?
Perhaps, if there are no dark areas nearby, and it needed an escape route, it would tunnel into a wall to get away. As a passive behavior it doesn't seem practical though.

Wood sword does two hearts, each successive tier adds one heart, capping at diamond with five hearts. Gold is the same level as wood.
I think they should have constantly glowing eyes, and make hissing sounds like creepers. That would be awesomely horrifying. Then again, might be a bit too much...
This was actually my initial plan for them, but I think its more terrifying if you just see something small flitting through the light and hiding in shadows, rather than a swarm of them. Also having too many kamikaze mobs hit you at once would be frustrating for players.

Ah, well, now I know...
Anyways, I thought about constantly glowing eyes, but I wanted it to be something that you just glimpse, maybe do a double take, or maybe you thought you might not have seen it at all.
