This my freinds is a solution to all the flashlight suggestions out there.
Starlight glasses are a pair of brightly colored glasses enhanced by redstone. When you wear them in low light situations things look noticibly brighter. Functioning like a primitive form of Night vision. you still wont be able to see well in pitch black, but better than not seeing anything at all.
Functionally it just adds a Red-orange tint to the screen and ups the brightness levels a bunch.
It would be a helmet item. and would deteriorate over time. like it would last an hour before it stops working.
As an added effect looking at regular light or sunlight will blind you if you are still wearing the Starlight Glasses

a similar effect can be seen in this video [skip to 5:40]
I like the idea, and it wouldn't make torches/lanterns useless as they'll still keep away danger as well as make it easier to identify ores that might be missed with the orange filter. (iron gold and diamond might be overlooked through the red/orange filter of redstone light amplification since it reduces the color pallet.)
It's too cheap as it stands, given the tremendous convenience. How about this: = redstone torch, [@] = string

I always have a heck of a time tracking down spiders, so that would help make it a bit pricier, especially if the glasses have to be crafted from scratch each time they run out.
With that, and making it so you can't wear a helmet while wearing these, I'd be okay with it.

Night vision may end up being used, but it'll probably end up being magic based, and not tech based.

Anyways, magic not with standing, what do you think?
