Actually no, you wouldn't need pipes or boilers at all to make complex machines. It's just a possibility. My system includes gears as well, along with drive-shafts.

Hey, I'm complimenting you by saying your stuff is more powerful if you're awesome enough to use it :tongue.gif:
Anyway, we should make your stuff be higher up on the tech tree, so mine could be about half-way, to give basic (Yet awesome) abilities, while yours could be for more stuff. May I suggest steam cannons? Or... Lava-powered steam cannons that kill , allowing you to turn the gunpowder into TNT to fire out of ANOTHER cannon? Or... wheels! Powered by slave and/or blood flow. Or... Maybe... Use extender-thingies to push TNT toward a wall, then explode it with a steam cannon powered by the elevator system I mentioned previously, so that you can collect coal to power an extender-piston-thingy to crush creepers into the floor and make more TNT... Yeah...
And megadog, only the old gears went on walls, my gear blocks go anywhere, floor, ceiling, the inside of an active volcano, anywhere, and they have gears on every side, as you might see from the gear block I designed and stuck on photobucket, which I might be able to post here... Imma edit this once I've upgraded it, but don't hold your breath (Unless you want to brag about how big your lungs are, in which case, feel free to hold your breath).
I hope that works...
Anyway, my gears-on-every-side idea means no confusing re-orienting, and no axles. That makes it simpler.
Guys download MCNostalgia for minecraft and use it to downgrade to indev (0.31). Next go into the minecraft.jar file and go to terrain.png. There look around for the gears. You will see they were removed and could only be obtained by hacking. Now there is no way of hacking to obtain them or see them first hand because they were removed permanently. I would suggest trying to find an inventory editor that supports indev and maybe try it again. I know there must still be a way of obtaining them!

Gears go on walls, where as redstone dust goes on floors.
Gears have an 'infinite' chain length, where as redstone can only travel fifteen blocks.
Hamumu.com, the site I should thank for helping me find minecraft.

I did a preview, it doesn't work, so here's the link again, any help getting it to work is appreciated. I can't be bothered finding out how on the forums considering my quick google search didn't work... See? That's the problem with me, I can't be bothered. Also, fun fact, the brown background for the gear block is from the chest, and I might upgrade it in a moment.
