Ok, so there might be a thread about this already, well, there is, but it's locked now. Anyway, we should have gears and other mechanical things, as a counter-part to redstone. We could have gear blocks, and you'd need to place gear blocks in a line, connecting from a power source to the output system. Also, you make 10 gear blocks with each craft, which might be too much, but considering all the iron needed, and the fact that the gear blocks take up space and you'd need lots to connect things, means that it should be OK. Just so you know, half blocks are gear blocks and red mushoos are redstone dust.
Input/power supplies are: Waterwheels, attached to flowing water, which would power any gear blocks connected to it (No distance limits, unlike redstone). Windmills, which would supply constant power, but would have to be built a certain level up (Above the clouds, I suppose). Cog furnaces, which would look like a normal furnace, but with cogs on the side. I wouldn't have a space for ores if you clicked on it though, and it would be designed for portable power. Lava furnaces, which would be made of metal, and you'd place it near lava to power it forever. Good for permanent, portable power if you happen to have a bucket of lava as well. And, finally, a redstone motor, which provides power to gears if activated by levers, sun sensors (See bottom), pressure plates or buttons, but not redstone torches. Used to connect redstone technology and gears. Here's the crafting thingies:
Gear block:
Windmill:
[] []
[] []
Waterwheel:
[] []
[] []
Geared furnace:
[]
Lava furnace:
[]
Redstone motor:
And here's some output devices:
Minecraft booster (Credit to Tufty, who gave me the idea on another thread):
The cobblestone can be replaced with wood, who more style. Who the hell you fit one block into another block, which is the same size, I have no idea, but it happens. This block gives an energy boost to any minecarts that drive over it. Of course, it has minecart tracks inexplicably, and automatically, attached to the top. Actually, to partially solve the block inside a block problem, this makes 3 boosters.
Fan:
Mostly just for decoration really, but it could be used to cool water into ice or something. Or power windmills. You could use a waterwheel to power a windmill that powers a pump that powers the waterwheel, which is probably a great (Albeit impossible) idea. Then again, it could work, if you started the whole thing with yet another power source. Also, powering a windmill with a fan, you could say you were environmentally friendly, forgetting to mention, of course, that the fan is powered by coal from a huge TNT-powered strip mine. Serves 2 (It makes 2 per crafting template thingy).
Pump:
This helps power a waterwheel with itself, and not only that, you also get 3 for 1 here. When you place it, next to water (Including diagonally vertically, but not diagonally horizontally), it makes the water flow away from the direction you placed it from, if it gets power and there's no blockages, such as in front of the outflow or blocking the entrance. If not powered, no water could get through, making it an alternatable floodgate.
Lava pump (I blame/thank dwarf fortress):
Just like a pump, except better! Stick 3 of them in the same direction to shoot lava up to 20 metres!*
*20 metres not guaranteed, batteries not included.
Floodgate:
[]
It would look like an iron cage/spawner, but when you closed it, the gaps would be filled with darker grey metal. When open with water/lava above or next to it, the gaps would look like water or lava. It could be opened and closed with either gears or redstone, and you could stand on it. If possible, Notch could make sand fall through it when open (Which would probably open up loads of ideas for computing), and maybe dropped items too.
Feel free to post any advice, suggestions, compliments, opinions, complaints, or some other things. Also, side thingy:
Sun sensor, activates like a button when hit with a certain amount of light, such as from dawn or people placing torches. Useful for timers when combined with things like floodgates (Blocking off a lava flow when switched off). Oh yeah, and, as you might've noticed, it connects to redstone, not gears.
Please don't criticize my friends post. You can put down ALL my posts you want just not this guys please.
I'm not criticizing.... oh wait I am. If you want people to tell you your idea is the best and greatest idea ever don't come here. This is for discussion and debate.
SO how is this better than redstone.

@muncher21, I know, but it should come back.
@Death, Yeah, I didn't know that though, but I hope, if he does return them, he'll do my ideas.
@muncher21 again, Yeah, it works fine, but gears are less complex for me to work with, and redstone is limited to certain things, you can't make realistic pumps with redstone, for example. And gears work better with minecraft's theme, not that I care. Also, it give people something else to do, such as making easy floodgates or launching magma high into the air, so that it falls all over their fortress, killing everyone inside. Also... Something... And gears look cooler. And, if you're not so good at mining, you only need iron to make a good redstone substitute, which shouldn't be too hard to get. Also, I reckon Notch should make lava melt gravel into more lava, so we can get lava by "farming" it by feeding it gravel. Yeah...
Also, wow, this thread is getting lots of quick replies, I wouldnt've (Farty, still not sure if this is a word) expected Farty to get on here so fast. And I don't mind criticism much, especially since it was only a question really. And it's not the best idea ever, but I'm hoping it's pretty good. Minecraft was one of the best ideas ever, in my opinion.

Just don't. I'm not here to support or to put down this post, only protecting it. Discuss this without putting it down. Many people have pulled that off and they go along with others just fine. Slowpoke helped me with many things in-game. Even though he turned his back on me he is still my friend. I would not like you to start a debate about ideas which have the sole intention of putting them down. I guess your doing this to point out the flaws but once you have found the flaws you rub it on peoples faces rather than ask the person to tweak or correct it.

A man can only understand the worth of his present for all eternity once he gets to see his future and past just once.
First of all, Farty are you in some way mentally retarded? You want people to discuss and debate the post, but without putting down anyone else's idea? So basically what you're saying is you want everyone to agree with you, and if they don't then to go away. Wow, what a great attitude, you'd make a brilliant leader, very similar to erm, Hitler, Stalin, Mugabe. I think we should definitely all take that attitude, that would make the world a much better place.
Secondly, can I suggest a redirect of this thread onto this one, viewtopic.php?f=1&t=51359
it's not been locked and discusses basically the same ideas, plus has more people replying to it so if you want more people to see your ideas then post them there.

Why? Why can't you just be kind and use constructivity? He's discovered many different things, technologies like water loops and pistons using MClawl/MCzall, so I know how smart he is. And I hadn't noticed that other thread, might have something to do with the distracting title. Also, that's more complex and expansive, and no-body would listen to me if I posted it there. And anyway, this could be an easier alternative for those more complex devices while Notch programs the more difficult things. Also, I already have diagrams :tongue.gif:
EDIT: TOO MUCH POSTING!!! I have no idea who's saying what now, with all this commotion. Can you stop posting so fast? Maybe once every half an hour or something? Just not twice a minute, because otherwise by the time I've finished posting this, youd've (Can you do double contractions like this? O.o) replied again, so my post would be out of date and obsolete. You've probably already posted at least 9 times since I started editing this. Farty, stop posting and start playing! I'm in your SMP base right now, if you haven't noticed. There were gears then they got changed to redstone.
I think gears would have made A LOT more sense than redstone.......I also like the idea of requiring power sources, rather than having the power come from a redstone torch (which never really made sense to me)
Also, redstone seems to be used mainly for turning blocks on or off, gears would be used making objects move.
Windmill powered mineshaft elevator anyone? =P
Hmm... It's a good idea, but I have no idea how the gears would make the platform move, wouldn't it just spin around? Maybe someone needs to post a pulley idea here, or a chain that would connect to gear blocks at the top, which would lower it. Also, you didn't connect the windmill to the gearblocks :tongue.gif: and the windmill would have to be high up, which makes it inefficient when you're trying to go down, I suggest using a geared furnace, since we have a smiley for it, and you can switch it off, instead of having to wait every time for it to arrive back to the top (Speaking of which, how would it get back up? O.o). Thanks for being the only one here with an actual suggestion, and I never said this popularity was a bad thing, but there's too much posting, so when I do long posts like this, it causes problems for me. And I was being quasi-sarcastic when I said to post slower, I doubt you could really time it very well. It'd be a way cooler elevator if it used a windmill to power a pump that pumped lava to a water/lavawheel that opened a floodgate in front of it to supply a lava furnace with power for a minecart booster to haul your coal out of the mines, which goes up to the surface, where you place it into a geared furnace to power an elevator to mine to redstone so you could make a redstone generator for a super-computer using gears AND redstone. Yeah... Also, maybe you could explain how these platforms would work and how they'd be made. I might post an idea tomorrow, if you don't.
EDIT: Also, I've got at least 5, possibly 6, e-mails because I ticked the "send me e-mails when someone posts" button. They need to delay that, so it sends you one e-mail every half an hour, as long as at least one person posts, so you get one e-mail for 5 posts in that time. Yeah...

Mmm. Well, I had missed slowpokes second post, sorry. Perhaps I overreacted. However, your thread is remarkably similar. My system is more complicated, which I think makes it more useful, versatile, and very probably more fun.
I do like a couple ideas you posted here about sun sensors and pumps that alter water flow. Perhaps I'll add them to mine... credit given of course to the owner.
Anyway, sorry for my flame-ey outburst, but I hate people taking my ideas, and tend to overreact swiftly.

Redstone conveys information.
Gears would convey energy.
This means redstone is for changing the state of things between on/off with the possibilty of getting different results with varied inputs.
Gears are for harnessing energy and transferring it for different applications
Hmm... It's a good idea, but I have no idea how the gears would make the platform move, wouldn't it just spin around?
the gears would be placed vertically, not horizontally, so no it wouldn't spin; the elevator platform would have some notches on the side for the gears to catch onto, gears turning clockwise would push the platform down and counterclockwise ones would pull it up...... this doesn't sound so complex to me....

Are you serious? It never really made sense. You are joking aren't you? If you are - which you must be - then I apologise for the following outburst.
WHY THE HELL DOES MINECRAFT HAVE TO MAKE SENSE!!!? Since when has game logic been at all reliable, if you want the game to have realistic circuitry etc. then go make a real circuit, or play a 'fun' educational physics game. Minecraft is a game about a man who upon birth must instantly begin his fight for survival; first he collects wood, using his bare fists to literally punch through the trees. He then must craft a wooden pickaxe which, according to the spatial physics of the game has a 3 metre long pick on a 2 metre long pole. With this wooden pick he must carve a cave out of a mountain, and then using the same wooden pick mine coal. In the later stages of the game this man can perform such amazing feats as collecting boiling hot lava in iron buckets, and creating water falls that literally fall from the sky.
I think my signature sums it up perfectly, the game makes no sense already and we still love it, so the argument that we should change things so that they make more sense in my opinion is a ridiculous one.
I wasn't complaining about redstone being unrealistic, I should have made that more clear I guess.... My problem with it is that A: it's confusing, gears would be a much more simple concept to grasp than weird redstone torch reversal switch thingies B: Gears would fit the minecraft theme more than redstone IMO (not that minecraft really even has a theme).
And jeese, aggressive much wilks? you've been falming nearly every post! calm down!

Passive minecrafter FTW.
Hamumu.com, the site I should thank for helping me find minecraft.
Ok, my idea for gear blocks isn't like the old gears, mine is a block, not something you place on a wall, and it doesn't have any specific directions. Unfortunately, I still don't know how the gear blocks could directly move the elevators. Maybe my brain hasn't fully started up yet... Muncher, to answer your question, it would be simpler to use than all those complex redstone things, it would have more mechanical possibilities, it would be easier to make than it is to mine redstone, and YOU CAN USE IT TO SHOOT LAVA!!! What else do you want? And please, from now on, only post constructive ideas and opinions, try to avoid too much flaming and stuff, wilks, I noticed you haven't posted even a single piece of help here, so I'm going to ignore all your comments so far. Why has most of this thread been discussing whether or not a certain thing is flaming? Also, Qwill, sorry, I didn't steal your ideas, but I should've done more searching. That's what happens when I have a really good idea (In my opinion), I'm just too eager to post it and discuss improvements later, instead of thinking of improvements myself. We need some sort of system, where we can just anonymously post an idea onto a list, then if you click it, it expands into a box with a more detailed description and some ideas for improvements from other people, but no personal opinions. That way, it improves better with a minimal amount of space.
Also, Qwill, I read about your steam system, and all the pipes, and that's the thing I don't like about yours, we need it more simplistic at first, with only gears that would be very simple to set up, just place them next to each other, but later, to do more advanced things like bridges and elevators, you'd need your ideas for boilers and pistons and things like that.
So, a summary: Good ideas, but I didn't steal them, my is simpler but less powerful, I was a little too hasty, and only constructive ideas and advice from now on. Sorry if anyone got annoyed by my posting.
