@Knytt I'm gonna say it again, real slow, so pay attention , okay. Adding two separate ores. Which serve only a single purpose. And have to be used. In conjunction with one another. To serve that purpose. Is. A. Pointless. Waste. Of. Programming. Okay, do you understand that? We do not want the mines to be filled with billions of single service ingredients, which is the way it would turn out if we took your approach to all items.
Who says that sulfur and salt peter would need to come from new ore blocks?
Bird droppings were used in ancient gunpowder for saltpeter. Chickens could spawn bird droppings in the same way they spawn eggs. Thoroughly burned (pure white) wood ash is a good source also, wood blocks destroyed by fire could sometimes drop it. Compost is a source too. Compost could be crafted with any arbitrary combination of organic items, then refined into saltpeter. Saltpeter doesn't have to only have one purpose either. It's an excellent fertilizer and could be used in place of bonemeal in farming. This would free up more bonemeal for dyes.
Sulfur is a little trickier. It could be an alternate drop from soul sand in the nether, since sulfur is heavily associated with the underworld. The same way flint drops from gravel. I'm sure there could be alternate uses for sulfur, it has a long history of alchemy/mystical applications. Perhaps a fueled torch, or flash grenade, that emits a quick burst of lvl 15 light. This would be extremely powerful though, and would need to carefully balanced, requiring large amounts of fuel, or perhaps the recipe could have a yield of 0-1, or both. A fueled fire sword/arrows may be a workable idea also. Smoke bombs that spawn temporary cloud blocks are another idea.
Of course drop/yield rates could be fine tuned for balance. Alternatively, smp servers could have customizable rules for tnt use. For instance, there could be a set cap for how many tnt blocks a player can place in a chunk, and/or a exponentially rising cooldown for each player between priming/placing tnt. The cooldown would reset eventually of course. This could limit over the top griefing with surplus tnt, while still allowing innocent tnt use, like blowing holes in mountains and caves. The settings option may be tricky to implement. It would be a nice option, but drop/yield rates would likely be the most efficient blancing tool.
In conclusion, this has something for three different subsets of minecrafters, the craftable gunpowder wishers, farmers, and cloth fanatics. With the exception of the tnt settings idea, it would be "relatively easy" to code. It would be a big update, but the code base for alternate drops(flint)/egg spawns etc. already exists and could be tweaked/cut and pasted to different blocks/mobs. Some new crafting materials, which is mainly a small graphic and number assigned to it. Craft materials don't interact with the world at all. I know I'm over simplifying things, but it would be waaaa-aaaay easier then adding ore blocks, that's for sure. And your mines will remain unclogged!
You mean like what most people are already doing :tongue.gif:?
Beyond the bowstring that spiders drop, nothing valuable drops from baddies right now. Most people already hole up after their first bow. Gunpowder is nice to play with, but it's not a strong enough incentive to go outside for most people.
IMO the reward isn't really worth the risk - and that's basically why I started this thread (EDIT: Thinking of another thread). :smile.gif: is kinda fun, but it's not rewarding enough to brave the night.
tnt is fun but who said you have to go at night creepers dont burn so wait in you house till nigght and go outside once most or all of the burning mobs die so it would just be geting caught with a spider in a dark area or killing creepers for gun powder
leaveittosteven i believe your far to drunk to be posting on this thread
xD Anyways i don't think sulpher should be CRAFTABLE, but MINEABLE. This isn't fight craft OR craft game (i came up with that...) it's Minecraft 1.5.2+

People tell you to don't look down. But if you don't look down, you don't know if your going to break your legs when you fall. Or whats under you...
I don't think you should be able to craft it. Creepers explode because they have gun powder in. If you want to make TNT then you have to face a creeper which can be quite the challenge. Being able to mine for it would make the game even more boring. It's like me saying 'why can't me mine for bones? I mean, sure skeletons drop them but they could also be buried in the ground. Why don't all mobs drop them? They all have bones!

Agree 100%
I like the 1st crafting recipe with gravel and coal.
Check out the server I play on, timgaming.com. (website and ip)
This is a good idea.I support the overall thread.but if somehow they add guns(hopefully just flintlock ones)it should be a bit easier.
