Just about as thick as a door is, and as tall [as a door is thick] too. As wide as a block though. It would sit at the very top and to one side of a block, and would try and sensibly align to solid blocks next to it.

Isn't this the same recipe for pressure pads though? Incidentally, I didn't realise they were pressure pads at first, just thought they were handy 1/2 sized steps. I also used them a bit like what you describe here, though they stick up into the next block...
Pressure pads are made with smooth stone rather then coble-stone and halve blocks ( ) are with three coble-stone.

Thinner, actually. If you place a door so you can get to the top, it would be that thick, and that tall. Lemme see if i can get a picture soon
