Hey Everyone,
Another idea here for what I think a use for books and bookshelves could be.
It involves stats, items, crafting recipes, etc.
First, I'll get bookshelves out of the way. Simply, a bookshelf would work as following:
-Each bookshelf can hold FOUR books. (Seems low, but if it held a more realistic ten, you'd only need one or two ever)
-To look in a bookshelf, you right click on it. It has four spaces, each space can have a book placed in it. If you right click on a placed book it opens it, left clicking picks it up, it can then be moved to your inventory/etc.
Now for the books, this is a bit more complicated:
-Books would be opened by right clicking them.
-Books would become non stack able.
-Their would be three types of book, each type is explained below.
Type 1 - Regular
-These are the current, craftable books.
-Once right clicked, it will appear blank. It allows you to name the book, change the colour of the book and most importantly, right whatever you want in it.
-These books could be used to write stories, fan-fics, journals, whatever. Others could then read them and edit them unless they are locked/published.
-When you don't want someone to edit your book, its content can become locked. Once you publish a book, it can no longer be edited, but it can be reproduced, that way you can give them out on a server, or hide them around for people to find or something.
Type 2 - Pre-Writes
-These are simple, these are pre-written books that can either be very common, or very rare.
-Basically these could be mysterious stories, fact books about mobs, or just basically be easter eggs.
-I suggest that a new player starts with one of these books, an instruction manual! It would give a very basic overview of the game and explain the controls. I may write what I think could be in this book at a later time.
-These books would be perfect if more rare items, like records, were added. Also if anyone wrote good fanfics for this game, they could be implemented into the actual game for all to find.
Type 3 - Recording Books (Stat Books)
-Basically, these are books that you record the things you do. I personally find these sorts of things very interesting.
-I would propose four of these books would exist in this game in total.
-They would be the Stat Book, the Monster Book, the Achievement Book and the Item Book. These are basic names, obviously. Each one explained below.
The Stat Book records basic things, including:
-Distance Travelled
-Unique Mobs Killed
-Total Mobs Killed
-Total Blocks Mined/Dug/Exploded/Etc
-Dungeons Found
-Times Died
-Hearts Lost
-Time played
-You get the idea.
This would be, in my opinion, a very interesting stat holder which unlike most games, is implemented in a very interesting way.
The Monster Book
-Stores every form of mob you encounter, friendly or not
-It tells you basic information about them, shows an image of one of them, and shows you how many times you have killed them.
Just an interesting way to log your mob encounters.
The Achievement Book
-Obviously, stores your achieved achievements if they are ever added.
The Item Book
-This stores each block/item you have picked up or destroyed (as some blocks may not be able to be picked up).
-Stores how many you have picked up, if its a block stores how many you have dug up/mined/etc.
-It shows there actual name, to avoid confusion (some people calling iron steel, etc).
-Shows crafting recipes that you have found, for example, when you craft a bucket for the first time, it will add that bucket to this book, and on that items page it will show you the crafting recipe for the item. If an item has multiple crafting recipes, it will show one crafting recipe as hidden, until you discover it and use it.
Useful for remembering crafting recipes. Another cool thing to have.
Now, your probably wondering what the point of bookshelves are. I really don't know, they would still be for aesthetics, but at least they would have some function.
I don't know how well I explained it, what do you guys think?
The only time you'll find a story or something is if Notch himself implemented it, you can't randomly find randomly written fanfics.
Thanks for all the support guys, some good ideas being thrown around here too. :smile.gif:
Edit: Sorry guys, I realized I didn't really contribute or answer any questions. Very tired at the moment, and sick. In bed at the moment so it's not exactly easy to type.
I think if you had a book destroyed, like a stat book or manual or something irreplaceable, I'm not sure, but there would have to be a way to replace it. I can't think of much at the moment.
As for the txt file being able to be used to make books, great idea. That's all I can say. As long as you cannot edit manuals/stats/etc in a text file.
Also yes, the book cases would be for storage, and you could carry them around if you wanted, I agree that it would be annoying to not be able to carry your books around.
Once again, thanks for the support guys. Your awesome.
I'm going to try and clear up the first post sometime tomorrow, and answer ore replies too. :smile.gif:
Very nice idea, it would add some purpose to bookshelves
EDIT:
-> Books could also be collectable, randomly appearing in hostile enemy villages or dungeons, could even be part of an achiev. Collectable information rocks :biggrin.gif:
Pretty good Idea :biggrin.gif:
Yesterday I just think I could Write down this Idea
Seem not...
This is even better than my Idea <.< Good Work :biggrin.gif:
Btw I dont know if your talking to me but English is not my first language << sorry
Also I would Add a fourth Type of Book Those who they have notting written on them for those who don'T want to compliquate themselve to decorate And If the Costum difficulty/option http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=89821 (this topic) is added It would be a good Idea to say if we want that our Bookshelve would be Customizable or not
Also there could be coloured ink from Paint (Idea like that >> )
I love this idea. It would feel more 'realistic' writing in game happenings while in game rather than in a blog or whatnot. Plus, if there's a physical book in the game in abandon houses or old caves, you could almost place older players who may have quit into legends.
I have some ideas about the books like:
1. Adding like what type of color cover on it like this in the Crafting square:
[] [] [] Blue meaning any type of dye and glass meaning left over.
2. Add pages to your book if you run out of space (Note: to make more realistic, the one added page can be placed anywhere, and can only add two pages.
>.> totes sorry I didn't look earlier... I made my own post, and I guess like... Here's my version, you tell me what you think, yes?
While prancing about my single player world, crafting mines and such, an idea of a story formulated within my mind, in which I send my map to friends, for them to play as a lost soul who finds himself within a community. As they travel, they go through the mines discovering more and more of what happened to the people, untill a final dramatic conclusion, in which the horrors that the last resident had gone through is revealed.
The problem is, I want to be able for them to find out the story on their own, and I had gone through a few idea's, thinking of maybe sending them text files with passwords on it, and signs throughout the mine with the password written on them, so that they can be opened, or having just signs with the last heroes message scrawled on them.
Finally I decided the best possible idea would be if bookshelves held books, which could be read by right clicking.
Probably a silly idea, but you've already implemted ink sacks into the game, so why not have writing? As a general idea this was how it would work. [at least in my head]
You build the bookshelf, it hold an inventory of 3 blocks, which can only be filled with books, and they can stack, and be joined together like chests [they have an "no access" side, but other then that, the top, bottom, front and sides are joinable. If another bookshelf if placed on one of these area's it shares an inventory with the shelf next to it]
You can create books, which begin as "Book" when moused over, and when right clicked while holding in a hand will open for editing on the first time. You can edit book's Titles [for example, if you wanted to take the book with you for later study, but didn't want it confused with other books, call it "Book A" ]
Editing a book require a feather [quill] and an ink sack. One Ink sack offers you 100 [More possibly] characters of writing [Not including spaces] and books can have a maximum of 5000 characters. Since that's an awful lot, a page system would also be nice, where pages can only hold 500 characters.
Review:
1) Books are editable
a) Books are edited only once
:cool.gif: They are "readable" after the first edit.
c) Book's can have titles given by the player.
d) Book's have 10 pages
e) A page can hold 500 characters of text
2)Book shelves can hold books
a)They can hold up to three [More if you think it's needed]
b)stacking/building near each other increases the size of the bookcase [much like double chests]
3) Writing
a)You can, as a player, write within books [Referring to 1]
b)Writing require a Feather and at least one (1) Ink Sack
c) An ink sack can write 100 characters worth of text, not including spaces
d) If you erase/delete a character, and have not expired your ink sack, it is returned to the sack

I don't know how well I explained it, what do you guys think?
Wha-? Left licking? XD
Don't worry, I understand it was a typo.
Anyway, pretty good idea.
No one else going to reply? :|
Short post, but there's nothing I can fault about it :smile.gif:

2) Add writable books.
3) Look at the spike in Minecraft fan-fiction!
(also, you spelled "write" wrong) :tongue.gif:)

I also play video games for the internet, too.
