Thank you for your well considered reply. You make some good points and I can't argue against any of the main ones in terms of validity (especially the ones near the end) because they are an accurate representation of how you see the game. (And if that sounds sarcastic, it isn't meant to be, it's genuine.)
Let's just say, however, I don't agree with them for the equally valid reasons of how I perceive the game.
I think simple guns would be an absolutely acceptable addition to MC (especially the musket types already suggested) and, when considered against the game as a whole, I don't see the complexity of crafting them as a reason to reject them
I think they would fit the theme perfectly (as a lone survivor in a strange, hostile land a gun would be pretty high on my wish list) and are certainly not out of step in a game with gunpowder and TNT IMO.
I think it would be easy to balance their addition without them being overpowered or pointless. Remember, I have suggested slow loading musket type weapons. You couldn't sit and fire, fire, fire but they might allow you a nice starting shot (or an emergency shot) when trying to hold out against an army of mobs closing in on your base.
I don't think they would be over used (if properly balanced) and I don't see how people using something that they like a lot is over use anyway. People play for fun and if they enjoy playing with a particular aspect - even if it is every single time they play - it's not over use because they are having fun. If people don't want them, they don't have to make them. Player's choice.
In PVP they probably would be used a lot but any PVP game worth its salt has the ability to tailor server rules and if you want a no guns server, you should have the option to set one up. Of course, you are thinking of gun use in PVP negatively. Personally, I think that it might be great fun to have a bunch of gun-armed players.
I don't think they would make the game much easier (again, if properly balanced). I do, however, think that after crafting my gun and the ammunition for it, it would be satisfying to take down an enemy, or at least hit him hard, after getting the rewarding "crack" sound from a gunpowder weapon.
Yeah, I would like some sort of blunderbuss weapon, which, while having a fraction of the fire rate, and much more difficult shots to make, does not suffer from the dropping like the arrows. It would still be just as strong.
Also, keep in mind that this is a discussion, not a "NOTCH SHOULD HADD M4s CUS I PLAY MW2 AND I WANT ROCKET LANCHARS HURRRRRRRRR". I know Notch said there wouldn't be guns, but I don't think a simple blunderbuss would ruin the gameplay, even though it could possibly hurt the theme.
What I really want is a shield. It could protect you from direct blows, but only be able to take a certain amount of hits. It wouldn't shield you from back-side attacks, though. It would mostly help against skeletons, as you are at their mercy, in the current build, if you're caught in the open.
Something like this, I'd assume:

As a guy stranded in a strange world I find it incredulous that I can even craft a sword considering that I lack a proper forge, anvil and hammer.
Actually in my personalized textures I've made the wooden sword into a club and the stone sword into a mace of sorts.
We should probably be starting out with clubs and spears as our weapons, maybe rocks for throwing. Needing to collect a lot of resources to make a proper blacksmith before we can get swords or metal armor.

I would enjoy the added challenge of setting up a 'blacksmith shop', especially if we were rewarded with new, advanced weapons at the end of the process. But realism is a tricky issue with Minecraft - just look at all the uproar about torches going out. Minecraft is a sandbox game, with no forced linear action, and as much as I like the idea, I think maintaining the game's sense of simplicity and freedom takes priority.
So - keep simple weapon crafting as it is. Forge, anvil, hammer could be required for any advanced weaponry introduced with the update.
And the single most useful, non-controversial weapon I would like to see:

The spear. Less powerful melee than the sword, but can be thrown and picked up. Perhaps string needed to tie the obsidian to the middle stick.

time to go to the positives
Throwing tiny tnt bomb thingys at creepers for epic revenge would be epic and epic on top of epic
i wonder....
Putting a bomb/grenade in a roof space sealed with a trapdoor (I believe Notch wants to add those eventually) and attached via Redstone to a pressure plate: automatic bomb drop if someone steps on it.
what is this? block-like "get-all-the-weapons-you-can" massacure? the game isnt in the 21st century. and besides hand grenades would be like adding cars. just defeats the challenge and thus, the fun is no more.

So let's add super meca suits! If you don't like them don't craft them right? /sarcasm.
This is the worst argument ever.

Muncher is right, listen to him, he can cure the blind and make paraplegics walk.
As for melee weaponds, a sword is the only alternative. I would love it if more choices were made, like:
-An axe made for battle
-A spear for longer melee combat
-Larger weaponds with harder damage / slower speed (a large axe, sword or smthing)
-Possibly also a shield that can be worn with easily held weaponds.
As for ranged:
I would love it if a crossbow or something else which can withstand gravity more than the bow can.
Also a short ranged throwing weapond would be awesome, something like a throwing star of throwing axe/knife.
here's a story all of you are going to find fascinating!
after the update i was forced to change the difficulty to easy. Why?
Because creepers kept spawning BEHIND ME!
i could hear the sssss only to turn and meet my death, at least i went with a bang...
you know if yo have tnt and a butten of somesort you can make landmines

A blunderbuss wouldn't be overpowered at all, actually. With a macro, you can fire thousands of arrows per minute, but the blunderbuss would have to be reloaded, making shots only every 15 seconds.
And before someone says it, we all know Notch specifically said there would be no guns, but this really wouldn't be all that overpowered as people think.
Grenades should be added though, like small things that make very small blast effects on the environment, but will do a good deal of damage if you aren't wearing decent armor.
Im a big fan of a trap spring loaded bow. A single block that when activated delivers 3 or 4 arrows in short succesion outwards.
Similar to a furnace, you could interact with it to keep the ammunition stocked up, or disarm via the same method.
Excellent for trapping hallways with a single pressure plate. Or line a whole heap of these up in a row with redstone wiring and a switch and you could fire a whole salvo over a spread area. Great for mob waves.
Smart ppl could even make an automated base defense, using circuits to alternate fire, or delayed fire to various systems :biggrin.gif:.
I thought Grenades would be a good item for use. And grenades aren't only applied to WW2. That's the same thing as saying: Swords??? What is this, Medieval Times?
if Notch said no guns, I'm pretty sure he would say no to grenades also

Sorry to burst your bubble but mainly I think this is based around the medieval times

That spear would've made a spade :smile.gif: how about this for a spear ?

The idea I saw for fire arrows also seems cool.
