Really awesome and I hope Notch adds it or something close to it. With respect to toughness - I think it should be a 'raid' mob. Requiring 4-5 people in SMP to defeat. It should not be killable by a single player.
Nothing else I can say :-)
Yea, if it requires a lot of people to take down, so be it. Dragons are not to be trifled with unless you're prepared to suffer the consequences.
I believe that a dragon should be solo-able, just make it really difficult to.
I dont believe dragons ahould be immune to TnT (just give it more hp), but i can stand for fire/lava immunity because it dwells in that stuff!

Not immune to TNT, but maybe it only does 25% damage to em.
So I'm guessing you're wanting a fire dragon, and probably skip all the other 'types' that get normally imagined alongwith. Fire/Cavern or fire/dungeon, or whatnot.
According to the pictures, you're going with 4leg, 2wing, firebreathing.. muscley. Ok. (Sorry., talking to myself.. and apparently, typing to myself too - for focus). Im wondering however since you're having issues with the wings..
I know you mentioned western as your preferred dragon. Im not familiar with the block-aspect of designing though (is there some info on that I could look up? just curious) - for 'more realizstic flying' (yes, I know, its a DRAGON) would you be able to hook up the wing along the length of body from shoulder to back leg, instead of just at front shoulder?
I'm guessing triangles won't work, because they're not blocks, and this would be the other issue you're running into?
Do you need the wings to fold up fully, or would you be satisfied with partially folded up for the dragon to walk around in the narrower tunnels? Is the dragon supopsed to be able to flap his wings for flight, or does he use magic with wings as support/gliding?
Could you use a somewhat hidden 'middle joint bone' for the places that need to fully bend? This may make the dragon much bigger though, unless you can use something similar to how ladders/etc fit on walls. (scratch that - as I said I'm not familiar with the block stuff yet)

me - "I feel like being evil today."

me - "So? I'm not doing it for the money."

Okay, lets see... you can't have the wing connected all the way along the body, as that would intersect with saddles or players sitting on em. Triangles would probably work but I'm trying to avoid them, I think I have it figured out. The wings should be able to fold up fully, again, I think I have that figured out. It can flap its wings, has to for flight. I can just use invisible joints if I need to, and I probably will.

@Fae: Sorry to butt in, my two cents.
"narrower tunnels" have you seen the size of that thing?? Unless it gets disappointingly small or absolutely enormous caverns start forming I'm guessing dragons are going to an aboveground kind of thing.
Yes, dragons are sky creatures, you won't find them underground. That's not their territory. They might have a lair or cave or something inside a mountain, but they won't be found in cave systems deep beneath the surface or anything. A creature that uses the sky to its advantage for survival won't be living underground.
Not immune to TNT, but maybe it only does 25% damage to em.
Time to Smaug up
Gem and stone/obsidian plated dragons will be the new fear of minecraft.
Of course, killing one drops whatever they were plated with :>
Dragons should patrol the skies and defend the skies as well. If you think you can just make a heug watchtower jumping up on your dirt and committing suicide to get back down, then no more of that cheap crap. A dragon should fly around because it would be EPIC to see that in the sky, and its shadow fly over you! It then sees some spire of tower in its sky territory and blasts it to hell before returning back to it's nest to rest, let's say at night.
It should not always go out to patrol the skies, but do it enough times for you to be awed at it's amazingness and for it to blast down your high up spires. (Only if it lives near enough to the surface to fly around. these creatures need to stretch their wings u know)
That's a nice dragon drawing.
Somehow the 5x5x5 size keep getting stuck in my head.
It's big enough to be imposing, yet not big enough that they'll have trouble maneuvering.

I like the idea of dragons with different armor types, along with different colors, but I dunno... might have to be one or the other.

Yea, the point of dragons is to have a wandering sky mob basically. And a really damn hard bossfight.

It's a, uh, model, but your comment is appreciated either way. 5x5x5 might be good for the body mass, but trying to cram the entire thing, including the wings and tail, into 5x5x5 space is a little too small.
That's a really good model. I like the original wings more, they seem to fit better with Minecraft's theme.
Also, what program did you use to model that? Looks like Blender or MilkShape to me.
Yea, I personally like the original ones just as much as the new ones, if not more. I only made the new ones to show people why making new ones wasn't a good idea, which is sort of a paradox... anyways, I use 3DS Max 2010.
Yet again another great idea, and visual provided by you. Two thumbs up again, this should in the game, as of RIGHT now. If not that is a sin to all humanity.
Good job man, looks amazing.

Firebombs, should they be implemented, they should be immune to.
