Right click while holding in order to hypnotize passive mobs. This includes Pigs, Cows, Sheep, Chickens, Squid, and Spiders during the Daytime. While the hypnosis lasts, mobs will become friendly towards the player. (provided they are not harmed) They will follow, but NOT BUMP INTO the player. Pigs may be controlled while ridden, sheep and chickens may be right clicked on with the fist to shear or pluck them without harming them.(chickens have % chance of giving egg when right clicked on) Right Clicking a cow from any angle with a bucket will give milk. Right clicking on a squid will drop ink without harming the squid. Spiders can be equipped with a saddle while hypnotized and ridden, with control, even allowing the player to go up walls. Hypnotized spiders will still become hostile at night, or if attacked by the player or damaged from falling, and attack the player even if being ridden (the spider will throw the player off when they turn hostile)
Each use of the hypnosis watch takes roughly 3 seconds that the player must be holding it down while aiming at a mob.(the mob does not actually need to be looking at the player) If the player's aim drifts off of the mob during this time, the player will still lose durability even though the hypnosis will fail. Hypnotizing a mob that is already hypnotized will reset the time for which that mob is hypnotized and uses no durability, hypnotizing an unhypnotized mob drains double durability, and hypnotizing a mob that HAS BEEN hypnotized will use normal durability.
I've just finished updating the opening post in preparation for posting it up on Get Satisfaction. I've altered the way shields work to be a little more specific on how they prevent damage and what their durability is, and I've also added some changes to the Satchels, namely making it so they can't be stored in chests either, to make them harder to use. I've also fixed a holdover on the torch arrows still being called light arrows in their description and updated to allow them to be used offensively, but at no bonus.
Sorry, Suasive. It only seemed fair, since your idea had originally been for coloring glass with dye directly, it was Msj2705 who actually suggested coloring the sand and smelting that to make colored glass. Anyone who follows the link will be taken to your thread though.
Love the ideas(especially light arrow and flint), but I'm not so sure about the recipes. They sort of devalue the crafting bench, which i think is kind of central to minecraft. I mean most people would largely ignore crafting benches if they could just make a mini pick or whatever. Please though, I don't mean to be rude, and again, love the ideas!
The mini pick takes the same amount of materials to make a full pick minus one stick. It takes a lot longer to mine with and has much less durability. It's a waste of resources to make them unless you have to.
Edit: I have an idea for the knife. By putting it next to a flower in the crafting bench, you could get a vine/stem. My ideas for the vine aren't 2x2. But it would be cool to make vine ladders for treehouses and vines that you can swing on.
Edit 2: Idea for vine involving 2x2
[]
The flowers are vines and the blank box is a random tool. You could use this to restore 10% of an item's durability. Would be useful for getting one last ore before heading back up.
Sorry to bump my own suggestion but I was wondering what the reaction was to my suggestion?
While I like a lot of the ideas you suggest, more emphasis on 2x2 crafting isn't necessary, especially not hand tools. If you want to craft on the go, bring workbenches. Like I said I like the ideas (not hand tools), but 2x2 crafting just is to easy to access in any situation, it would make MC too easy.
These would be an excellent addition to the game. I particularly like the concepts for shields, topiary, and the sapling-to-wood mechanic (axe necessity included), and I would downright kill to see the quill-and-ink and colored sand/stained glass ideas added.

Do not meddle in the affairs of Creepers, for thou art weak and easily blown to bits.
And Zoo, if these were implemented, nothing's stopping you from STILL taking the workbench around.
It just means if you're willing to live with using resources poorly (handheld editions) you don't HAVE to carry a workbench around.
blew me up with all my stuff

I also added an idea I came across that shows some promise:
