I like the idea of all of it, but the only thing i think about is the boomerang.
It should be more like you throw it at the mob how many times (it depends on what material it is made out of) and they die.

I have another thing in my head.

should be a painting of a creeper because they drop gunpowder, same with string = a painting of a spider, also with bones = a painting of a skeleton, last of all, a feather = could be a zombie.
They are just my ideas of what i think would be cool.
While there already is a painting of a creeper, a full-sized one would be awesome.
the larger banner has gone down again along with a bunch of other images. I'm going to have to find a new image hosting site for these files. So far I'm leaning towards Imageshack. If anybody has suggestions of a different decent, free hosting site that can handle animated gifs, external embedding, and high bandwidth usage, let me know. So far Photobucket and Tinypic are just not up to the task.
I'm pretty sure there's coding in place to prevent the player from spawning in a vast desert, I'm also pretty sure that Minecraft doesn't actually have biomes large enough for a "vast" desert to exist, and either way, what does that have to do with this suggestion, spawning in a vast desert would screw the player equally as bad whether this idea was implemented or not.

Ive had it happen. It was cool up until I realized I had no wood for miles.

I once saw a chicken push a creeper off of a cliff. I never looked at chickens the same way ever again. That is of course until I needed feathers.
Still, making tools from sand isn't really something this suggestion is meant to deal with. At that point you either accept the cool backstory that implies of you being stranded in the desert (in which case wandering for miles to find something to make tools from is just part of the deal) or you start over with a new world.
Also, I made some additions to the shield description, namely allowing shields to be used from the quickbar in order to equip them. Much the same way that Arrows would be right clicked to equip them to the ammunition slot. Personally I think ALL equipable items should function that way, but that's something for a different thread.
AMAGAD. For heaven's sake GET A NEW FREAKING BANNER. With a topic as popular as this, everyone who supports it has the banner, and it's so freaking annoying. It's flashy, and I can't tell what the heck the items are without staring at it, waiting for it to loop back.

Love the ideas(especially light arrow and flint), but I'm not so sure about the recipes. They sort of devalue the crafting bench, which i think is kind of central to minecraft. I mean most people would largely ignore crafting benches if they could just make a mini pick or whatever. Please though, I don't mean to be rude, and again, love the ideas!

The mini pick takes the same amount of materials to make a full pick minus one stick. It takes a lot longer to mine with and has much less durability. It's a waste of resources to make them unless you have to.
Edit: I have an idea for the knife. By putting it next to a flower in the crafting bench, you could get a vine/stem. My ideas for the vine aren't 2x2. But it would be cool to make vine ladders for treehouses and vines that you can swing on.
Edit 2: Idea for vine involving 2x2

The flowers are vines and the blank box is a random tool. You could use this to restore 10% of an item's durability. Would be useful for getting one last ore before heading back up.
Hmm, why the decision to make normal sand the 'light grey'? I understand that the natural sand isn't white, per say (it doesn't REALLY match any of the colours available) but I'd have thought for consistency with the wool spectrum it would've made sense for it to be white. In any case the normal glass you get from smelting sand - with the default texture pack - has white(/pale blue) highlights, and I'd have thought white was more analogous to clear than light grey.
Not complaining here, the coloured sand to glass idea is great and I'd love to see it in place, particularly if the glass could cast coloured light, just curious as to your reasoning on this one.
Lets face it, regular sand makes CLEAR glass. White sand makes frosted glass, gray sand makes gray glass, and black sand makes black glass (though since it's not fully opaque, it's still going to end up being a dark gray) with that in mind, do we really need another shade of gray for glass? In my opinion, losing a shade of gray is far less important than losing something like brown, or pink, or yellow.
EDIT: Your recipe for an inkwell and quill is one of the best I've seen around, too, though most of them are similar (naturally). Bowls definitely could use a bit more love - none of these silly, unnecessary glass bottles or anything- and the graphic looks great.
Thanks. All my work either uses or mimics vanilla minecraft. I just flip things around, cut pieces out, mix them together, or use the color palette of one item but the pattern of another. I've very rarely ever created anything completely from scratch (the boomerang may be the only thing that I've made so far that didn't use the base item of something else to start with)

It's entirely intended to be too difficult to tell what the items are without staring at it, that way you actually visit the thread in order to find out the details.
It also pulls the focus away from any one specific item and onto the overall idea of expanding the recipes that can be feasible on the 2x2 grid.
I'd say it's doing its job nicely.
You will be getting your wish though. I'm planning to move all the images over to a new hosting site and I need to update the new recipes anyway. I might slow it down by a few ms, but not much.

because if we just gave you it as a mod, you'd be bugging the mod makers(and/or me) about fixing or improving things instead of bugging notch to implement it, who is much better equipped to ignore all of us.

Ok I see your point. What I don't understand is why this 2x2 crafting thing is so important, I mean if being able to craft on the move is that important to you, just bring a crafting bench with you.

Yeah, but at that rate, why even have the 2x2 crafting grid at all? Instead, just replace that with "auto workbench maker" slot that only takes up one space and can only hold a workbench, if you aren't carrying a workbench, then any time you pick up 4 pieces of wood or more, they'll automatically be converted into a workbench.

That's a good idea. The 2x2 crafting square at present doesn't (and in my opinion shouldn't) serve much of a purpose besides crafting a workbench.
