i agree with you on all accounts, but i know you know that neither of us have seen a really good, long, minecart system on ssp without inv edit. as for the onyx, thinking about making a seperate thread, or maybe the maker of this one will se it and add it on to his ides.
as a follow up, i want to see what anyone thinks of my two ides-
thank you in advance for your support, criticism, and other suggestions.

-being able to smelt obsidian. it would be harder than smelting diamond, but create onyx, which has the same abilities and properties as diamond, exept for being a little less durable, but can still mine obsidian. this is because it is much harder to mine, but you must keep in mind, how often do you see diamond? now, how often do you see obdian?
Obsidian should only be able to be melted/smelted by lava, and really, there's not enough reason to make ANOTHER material to craft items with. If anything, it would be better simply make obsidian have the same mining speed/ability as diamond, but a durability equivalent of stone or wood (since it's effectively glass/rock) Since obsidian requires diamond to mine for use in crafting, this would allow people to extend the use of their diamond pickaxe by mining it, and then making all their "diamond equivalent" tools with the obsidian they mine, but to get an equivalent number of uses to diamond tools, they'd need to fill up their entire inventory with obsidian tools.
- changing minecart track recipe. think about it, you have a 48 block walk to your mine from your house, which is still short. you would need 18 steel ingots. there and back, 32. now that dosent seem like much, but it almost completely takes any chance of making a nice long, minecart system and blows it right out of the water. i think either the recipe should yield more tracks or it chould ude different materials.
I had seen one suggestion to be able to make smooth stone minecart tracks, they had proposed this to replace the iron minecart tracks, but I suggested it as a weaker supplement to the iron tracks (minecart's top speed is reduced, and/or has a chance of breaking when you move over it, and/or loses speed faster, etc)
However, this has absolutely no connection to 2x2 crafting, so this is not the place to discuss that idea at all.
So, has anybody asked how you could build hatchets out of wood if only hatchets and axes could collect wood?
It would basically make the tier one resource unobtainable since wood is required to fashion them...

Sticks:
This allows players to use excess saplings to go towards creating Sticks. This is primarily aimed towards making it feasible to implement the game mechanic where Axes and Hatchets are required to get drops from breaking logs, and not when broken by hand.
Wood:
4 sticks crafted together = 1 wood, yes, this is not equal exchange, since 2 wood can be used to craft 4 sticks, but this prevents the player from simply crafting back and forth between sticks and wood whenever convenient. This is another crafting recipe primarily focused on making it feasible to implement the game mechanic where Axes and Hatchets are required to get drops from breaking logs, and not when broken by hand.
I dont like how on the banner it only shows wood and diamond tools
The wood and diamond efficiently convey that 2x2 covers everything from wood through diamond and doesn't stop halfway up the teirs. If I had included stone, iron and gold for every single tool, it would have pretty much doubled the length that it takes to cycle through everything as well as the filesize.
About the new poll:
I want the full Shields but I think the small Shields are a bit unnecessary.
Even though the thread is about 2x2 crafting, I kind-of agree. I like full shields, but not really the half shields so much.
I can see that a lot of people wouldn't want to pull out a workbench every time they want some armor... But on the other hand, I don't see people using the half shields enough to make it worthwhile. After all, players are probably going to craft their shield at the work bench when they make all of their other armor. So they'll just make a full shield anyway.

That's provided they still want to make a workbench at all. Also, don't underestimate how useful something is when it is THE ONLY option players would have for armor without the workbench.

I guess that's true. We've all been taught to lean on the work bench a little too much, maybe.
I am not sure if this has been stated already as I was reluctant to read through 26 pages of responses but for the directional markers why have 1 stick make 4 markers? Doesn't really make any form of mathematical sense to get 4 markers that would (in theory) need a stick each to produce out of just one. Surely the ratio should be 1 stick = 1 marker? Apologies if this was already discussed. Other than that my personal opinion of the hand tools is that I dont know how much use I would find for them. As much as I love your enthusiasm in trying to make a 2x2 grid have more crafting utilities, it just really is not that hard to make a regular workbench or 2. I am all for the new items, specifically I think the idea for markers is actually very neat and is one of the items that would be an essential addition to the 2x2 grids capabilities. Like you said, it would give an extra (non-decorative) purpose for flowers and I think would turn out to be a handy neccesity for any minecraft explorer starting out in their new world. Personally I could see the directional markers fitting into the game very easily, the other stuff I am not so sure about...bows, boomerangs although nifty should (in my opinion) be left to mods and not the actual game.

It makes no less logical sense than 1 stick making 4 arrows.

Of course not, which is why there are ideas that cover skills the workbench would otherwise be needed to craft, and things that are completely unique and don't have a workbench counterpart at all.
