and to all who say these are to over powered, in the long run, you are better off with the full size tools as the require less materials in block for block comparisons...

I really do like the Knife idea, except I think it should only be craftable with a cobblestone and a stick. Mainly because I don't think that it's a great idea to be used as a replacement for your sword, but as a throwing knife.
Also, I understand that this topic is meant for more uses of the 2x2 crafting grid, but wouldn't some of these just make the standard 3x3 square pointless? I mean, sure the tools are weaker, but you can simply make more of them.
Other then that, great ideas, and I hope they get added to Minecraft :biggrin.gif:
You'll consume more materials faster and the tools are generally less powerful/slower but are useful for being on the go

Speaking as someone who always gets lost in his own caves, I would cheerfully strangle somebody to get my hands on those directional arrows in the first post.
I totally agree that there should be more 2x2 crafting recipes. Maybe not all of these, but something more. I also fully support the ammunition slot idea. It's always been a bit weird to me that arrows just sit in your inventory... it seems like weapons should be equipped the same way armor is. And I assume that wouldn't be too hard to implement into the game.
Directional markers are also a good idea, although I think the proposed image/materials for them is a bit weak. I also like the idea of making flint from gravel, although I wouldn't mind having to use more gravel in the recipe.
Specific recipes that have a lot of potential: Knife:
Knives would be NICE. I'd move the crafting recipe to resemble current swords a little more, though. Resource over the stick instead of diagonal. Also, if the ammunition slot was implemented, I would suggest that a player can hold only 1 sword, but 2 knives. That way, two diamond knives would be a bit more powerful than 1 diamond sword. And the player would look awesome wielding them. I'd suggest that swords have a wider damage range, but knives do more damage close up.
You know... heck. I'd love to wield two swords, even. So I'll retract the whole "only 1 sword but 2 knives thing" and just go with the "sword has wider damage range, but knives do more damage close up." I would like to eventually hold two swords.
Sling:
I would prefer to call your gravel "bullets" some other name like "stones" or "pellets" or whatever, but the sling is a good idea. And I agree that it would have to be weaker than the bow.
Boomerang:
Ah heck...why not? It wouldn't have a lot of use, but it would be fun. The only use I could see was if the boomerang could pick up things across chasms (like the zelda games do). But that's probably some sort of copyright infringement, and the last thing we want to do is to turn minecraft into a wanna-be zelda game. So zilch that idea. Boomerangs aren't necessary, I'd say... but they could be fun.
Full Shields:
I agree that shields should defend when you're sneaking, and operate on the all-or-nothing basis until they are destroyed. Perhaps a different arrangement in the crafting recipe, but a good idea anyway.
Torch Arrow:
I was a bit skeptical about this one, but the idea of being able to shoot torches across chasms is too awesome to ignore. But I ONLY like this idea if the arrow emits light while it is in flight. There would need to be coding for it to be a light source, but it is ESSENTIAL to the idea of the torch arrow. I don't care about firing arrows anywhere if they magically light up once they land. I would need to see the light in flight. And then it would be awesome.
Coal Blocks:
Compressed coal for fueling powered minecarts and furnaces. GOOD ..... IDEA. Not only for smelting, but for building as well. Not everyone wants to use obsidian to get their black, and coal blocks might provide some interestingly flammable structures.
I'm not so hot on the hatchet/stick and sapling ideas, but the ideas mentioned above are what I believe to be the cream of the crop. I would be very happy if they were implemented, and they're good ideas that fit in with the current system of minecraft.
okay, it does seem like there is a significant increase in viewership, so I have poll number 3 back up for people to vote on. Remember, all the old polls can be found at the bottom of the Opening post.
The Hatchet would only be implemented if Trees were made to only drop Logs when broken by an Axe or Hatchet
Let's think about this now ... Trees require hatchet or axe to cut down, which requries wood to get, which requires hatchet or axe ... hmm I don't like where this is going

You should have left 4/5 (2nd run) up for longer.
People still don't get it, and that explained it pretty well.
I think the hand tools are a great idea (I only started playing recently and I already know how often one can find themselves far below ground and a great distance away from their toolbench when one's tools run out), and everything else is acceptable at least.
However, I think that there certainly needs to be some balancing depending of course on actual testing. The only thing I think needs balancing even without seeing a test would be the hand tools. Although they have the reduced durability, this method allows 64 unmade picks to be stored in 4 slots. Having 192 of any material but cobblestone may be unrealistic, like I said I haven't gotten far, but even with 10 per slot that's still a huge inventory space reduction, and time reduction. Almost nobody would use full except for diamond. I would say that additionally all the hand tools should take longer than full sized, making it more of an OMG I JUST FOUND DIAMOND AND MY PICK RAN OUT thing. Or maybe not, being able to craft tools on the spot with only slight downsides could be considered a good thing.
The hatchet/axe required for wood seems reasonable and sensical (Seriously, has anybody here tried breaking a meter block of wood with their bare hands?) if saplings are made easier to gather and, yes, rod crafting were reversible in a sense. Though I wouldn't mind a completely reversible (4 rods makes 2 wood) or if you could get the rods back by simply
[] [] []
so that wood could be a compact storage for rods equivalent to ore blocks. Not key, but seems reasonable to me.

The thing that you're forgetting is that by that logic, people can have 64 FULL picks stored in just 4 slots as well; 3 stacks of 64 material, 1 stack of 17-64 logs (16 of which can be converted into 2 stacks of 64 sticks) and the remaining 1-48 which can be converted into workbenches as needed)
The point of the hand tools is they give short term solutions to those running short on wood, or who are simply unprepared, or just simply gives them a more convenient option in terms of organization.

The only thing is that Ore Blocks aren't really useful for crafting anything. (unless you count the golden apple, which I don't) Wood and sticks are both useful in different ways for crafting different things, so beign able to craft that way would let you have no need to think about whether or not to convert wood to stick (or vica versa) at all, by having sticks craft to wood at a loss, people have options, but still have to think about what they're doing.
here's my solution to the overpoweredness of the hand picks.
they should be the same speed as a regular pick, but with half as many uses, and they should yield no drops. therefore, they would only be for digging, and not for mining.

They already do have half as many uses as a full pick, and if they aren't going to mine anything, then you might as well work by hand. They cost exactly one stick less than a full pick, so it's pretty much impossible for them to be overpowered.
