I like most of the ideas but if you have to have a hatchet or axe to chop wood how would you get a hatchet or axe... they require wood :sleep.gif:
well, lets see... there's a recipe in this list for crafting sticks from saplings, and a recipe for crafting wood from sticks... why don't you tell me how you would get wood for making the axe or hatchet?
Now that leaf decay has been reintroduced, a use for the stacks of saplings acquired (sticks/topiary) is something i can get behind. but i don't like the idea of requiring a hatchet to chop down trees... I just don't like the concept. punching trees in minecraft is kinda iconic. Perhaps if tree variants were introduced. (like hardwood trees as compared to softwood trees.) I could see compromise if hardwood for the sake of example required an axe/hatchet. but my opposition is based primarily because it's iconic to start the game off by beating down a tree with your bare hands.
And i like how he 2x2 tools are all inferior to the 3x3 grid items. in a pinch they will be handy, yet they won't be desirable to make very often.

you do realize that you still would be able to beat a tree down with your fists, right? that would actually be a fairly efficient tactic for making the leaf blocks wither for easier gathering of the saplings to make wood. Even if that wasn't good enough to retain the "iconic feel" then you could still go for the option where Log blocks drop wood planks when broken by hand, or just have that on easy or hard.
Yes I do realize that. I did read the entire section about chopping. I didn't think about the withering part i will give you that. And incidentally that itself is probably enough to make me change my mind. With that prospect in mind i think i may just vote for the plank system.
Boomerang:
Yes, that's right, you can already make your avatar look like Link, you've got the sword, you've got torches, bow, explosives, and I've already suggested Shields and what are essentially Light Arrows, so why not just go whole hog and throw in boomerangs?
if you're doing this LOZ Boomerang thing, you have to have the Boomerang able knock off Skeleton's heads like in Links Awakening, Minish Cap, Etc. I'd definitely switch to a Link skin then!

I'm so Hurrrr, I herp derps!
now this MAY have been mentioned already, but the shields are AWESOME
shields should have their own hotkey while their in the shield slot so you can pull them out quickly in a bad situation, like a skeleton fires an arrow and you have 1 heart left and you cant dodge, you just press the _(i dont know what it should be! maybe "Q"?)key and be SAVED! same goes for swords/knives.
also, they are SPADES, not TROWELS. and they should look more different from their larger counterparts.that goes for all the mini-tools.
why has noone noticed
that this guy

the DROP KEY (q) for sheilds?

When I saw this I hoped it was a mod that I could use, and was disappointed when I saw that it was just a suggestion. More than anything else I've seen on these forums, these ideas should be implemented. I made an account just to post this in fact. Having this implemented would improve the game tremendously.
the only thing i dont like, is the handpick, or that it nearly only has advantages.
1. you dont really often use a pick(axe) as a weapon, so you dont care about only 2/3 damage than a pickaxe.
2. you can use it as a hoe, so its 2 tools in 1.
3. it has same mining speed as pickaxe, and mine same blocks as its big brother, maybe you should make that it has only 2/3 mining speed of the pickaxe, thats the only thing i really care about.
except the little thing with the handpick (point 3, above) i love those ideas! i hope notch put them all into minecraft
You forgot one thing. The handpick has half the durability of the regular pick. Which means that half of the valuable resources spent on it are wasted (because for one stick more and a 3x3 crafting grid you would have a normal pick.)
And also using it as a trowel uses double durability too so you get even less uses for it. if you use it there.
Handpick is half as effective as a regular pick and it is only 37.5% as effective as a hoe. granted this can be used in a pinch but if you have access to a workbench you have almost no reason to make this. (which is the point of the tool, a substitute that can be useful in a pinch)
Wow... you can't make up your mind, can you? Everything you claimed about hand tools being too powerful in your first paragraph was completely negated by everything you said in your second paragraph about how you could accomplish the same thing by using the workbench.
Meh, my point in paragraph 2 was simply that it's so easy to carry a crafting bench around that I dont see anyone past newbies using the 2x2 tools. (though I LOVE the idea for newbies, like everyone else I was confused as hell on how to craft stuff, if my best friend hadnt been into MC and explained it to me, I probably would have given up after a while bc I'd likely have not realized (1) patterns and (2) making a crafting bench)
Also, ironic thought: Combine the hookshot mod and this "will-be-mod" with a boomerang and light arrows... all we need is for Herobrine to like capturing a princess... lol
I like pretty much all of those ideas. They don't seem to be overpowered for gameplay, maybe a few mobs will keep a better balance (having more weapons than mobs seems unnecessary), and these ideas fit minecraft very well imo.
I really do like the Knife idea, except I think it should only be craftable with a cobblestone and a stick. Mainly because I don't think that it's a great idea to be used as a replacement for your sword, but as a throwing knife.
Also, I understand that this topic is meant for more uses of the 2x2 crafting grid, but wouldn't some of these just make the standard 3x3 square pointless? I mean, sure the tools are weaker, but you can simply make more of them.
Other then that, great ideas, and I hope they get added to Minecraft :biggrin.gif:
I dig this but I got a little beef with it, only wood, and mabie stone tools should be able to be crafted in the 2x2 grid, Anything with iron or gold or diamond should need a work bench to be worked for obvious reasons.

that's because it states at the beginning that ALL hand tools have that reduced durability.
