now this MAY have been mentioned already, but the shields are AWESOME
shields should have their own hotkey while their in the shield slot so you can pull them out quickly in a bad situation, like a skeleton fires an arrow and you have 1 heart left and you cant dodge, you just press the _(i dont know what it should be! maybe "Q"?)key and be SAVED! same goes for swords/knives.
also, they are SPADES, not TROWELS. and they should look more different from their larger counterparts.that goes for all the mini-tools.

How about using the sneak button like I specifically stated in the shield section?

Spades: A shovel of varying size, sometimes as large as shovels, though there are apparently hand sized variants as well.
These ideas are cool and all, but I just have one thing to say: No. You can't make the hand pickaxe have the same durability as the normal pickaxe, it defeats the purpose of actually having a real pickaxe, damage doesn't matter. If people want a weapon, they'll craft a dagger. If you ask me, all 2x2 crafted main tools (meaning the sword pickaxe shovel axe and hoe) should have quarter the durability of their fully crafted counterparts. For example, diamond tools have a durability of 256 blocks (256 hits if its a sword), plus 1 additional one before the tools breaks. So a 2x2 crafted tools would have a durability of 64 blocks/hits, with the one final block. The only reason I think this is because 2x2 crafted tools defeat the purpose of a crafting bench if you think about it.

What are you talking about? It already specifically states that hand tools have half the number of uses as their full sized version. 1/4 is too much.
That's a horrible idea. You'd kill the workbench that's become a symbol of minecraft. Make it a mod, but DO NOT try to get it into the game unless you have the intention of ruining minecraft's image.

No, you said the hand pick can mine as many blocks as the normal pick, you said the DAMAGE would be halved. And if a quarter is to much, then I guess people would go up out of their mineshafts and actually use a crafting bench.
Here is where he said it: In the opening post, in the introduction to the hand tools section. I highlighted the info in red.

What I am proposing are hand tools; Knife, Sling, Trowel, Hatchet, and Hand Pick. I know that some of the individual ideas may have been mentioned before, but the focus here is all of them as a whole. These would provide more support for the 2x2 crafting table, and provide weaker, but easier to craft Tools that wouldn't require the Workbench or as many materials to craft, allowing them to be used as temporary substitutes until the workbench and/or more materials can be obtained. These tools would also provide more 2x2 crafting combinations, so that a new player could have a better chance at stumbling on the idea, on their own, that arranging the same materials in different patterns could result in different items being crafted.
(The inclusion of Hatchets depends on Trees being altered to not drop Logs unless broken with an Axe or a Hatchet, along with the addition of crafting sticks from saplings and wood from sticks)
NOTE: For durability, all hand tools receive a -1 to the N value of their material (where Durability = 2^(N+5)+1) so: Wood - 17 uses, Gold - 17 uses, Stone - 33 uses, Iron - 65 uses, Diamond - 513 uses
That's a horrible idea. You'd kill the workbench that's become a symbol of minecraft. Make it a mod, but DO NOT try to get it into the game unless you have the intention of ruining minecraft's image.
So by giving you more options for crafting, I'm ruining minecraft?

Look, if you're going to try to call someone on their own words that have been picked over for 20 pages worth of posts, you better make DAMN sure of what you're talking about:

A Hand Pick made from the same material as a Pickaxe will be able to mine the same blocks as that same Pickaxe can.
See that first part in bold? Durability is listed for ALL hand tools, and that includes the hand pick. See the second part in bold? Do you see "number of" between "same" and "blocks"? No, you don't, because I never said the same NUMBER of blocks, I said they can mine the same blocks, so a wooden handpick can also mine coal and stone, but not mine iron or diamond or gold, a stone handpick can mine iron, but not diamond or gold, an iron handpick can mine everything except obsidian, etc.
That's a horrible idea. You'd kill the workbench that's become a symbol of minecraft. Make it a mod, but DO NOT try to get it into the game unless you have the intention of ruining minecraft's image.

Owned . . .
Also this idea has a lot of advantages:
- Less resources used
- No need for a workbench
- Create tools in the middle of eventful moments (find diamond and no pick, mob spawner and no sword, etc)
- More variety in tools available
- Shields and small shields for advanced combat situations against skeletons and ghasts
:biggrin.gif:
i like most of the ideas in this but i think that the hatchet should be differant
first we should be able to brake trees with our hands but rather than giving us logs it gives us planks or saplings, then a hatchet will allow for log harvesting (same speed as hands currently) and does more damage on enemies.
I'm going to agree on needing to give any high-end hand-tools more disadvantages. It's just too tempting when you can stack 64 diamonds/iron/etc to mine the high-end ore you aren't expecting as opposed to a pickaxe that CANT be stacked. (personally I think the idea of "you cant craft past stone handtools" is the way to go)
Also, right now there is one major problem. I can build a workbench anywhere and when I'm done, break it and it drops a workbench so it's easily portable. (same goes for furnaces) so if I'm gonna do a lot of mining and expect my tools to break, I can carry my workbench with me. If workbences were NOT portable (breaking it drops wood) then it would make a difference. Likewise even if this were the case (which I actually think was intended), I can carry a stack of logs and build workbences on-the-fly in the event I need them (64 logs = 64 benches). The workbench needs to be re-made to require more time and materials, possibly even tools (build a workbench from wood, iron, cloth, etc/whatever, then equip it with a hammer, saw, etc) and to be unable to be broken and taken with you (possibly making each bench require 4 (or more) pieces, none of which are stackable?). This makes the workbench important and prevents it from being portable and easy to make on the fly.
I'm not saying that this is a bad idea, like most of the posters I LOVE the idea of crafting more items in the 2x2 block, but the mechanics of the engine dont add up...
Okay, lets tone the use of red down just a tad when you're not a mod. I am hoping to start modding this eventually, but I have a couple other threads that I'm keeping organized and working on finishing before I get into that.
Anyway, after the enormous response that this last poll got since I added the banner, I felt it was worth seeing if some of the previous polls might get similarly increased response, so I'm doing a second run on the controversial poll, and may do a second run on the other polls as well.

Wow... you can't make up your mind, can you? Everything you claimed about hand tools being too powerful in your first paragraph was completely negated by everything you said in your second paragraph about how you could accomplish the same thing by using the workbench.

REED THIS FORUM MOVING LIGHT SOURCES EXIST
Spades: A shovel of varying size, sometimes as large as shovels, though there are apparently hand sized variants as well.
Trowels: Specifically a small hand shovel.
Hence I chose the term that specifies the hand held variant.

It's certainly worth considering. Maybe have them act as repeater blocks for extending the range of redstone dust.
