Why not the hatchet? And do you mean JUST not the hatchet, or do you also mean that it shouldn't have the logs need axe/hatchets to mine? I'm a little curious about your reasoning.
This is another crafting recipe primarily focused on making it feasible to implement the game mechanic where Axes and Hatchets are required to get drops from breaking logs, and not when broken by hand.
This will make the game impossible. You NEED to punch a tree to get your first wood. You need wood for your first axe.
<trollin>Are you implying that we wait for a creeper to amble around and aim the explosion to get the wood? You would have to destroy 4-5 trees and lose half your health to get enough wood to make some tools!</trollin>
Note: Those <trollin> HTML tags are for joke implementation without being too annoying; don't hurt me for doing this.

Every time that someone on the support forums doesn't say anything after I tell them a possible solution, I assume that they are having too much fun enjoying their fixed Minecraft to reply.
So are you only joke trolling about the creeper thing, or are you joke trolling about not realizing that you would be able to make sticks from saplings, and then make wood from sticks under this system?

Just Joke Trollin for the creeper thing.
Edit: The Sapling thing could be voted out. Maybe. It's in the poll.

Except it specifically says that the axes required to mine log blocks is dependent on those recipes, and take a look at the figures, there's a pretty strong lead for those recipes.
depends on what the thread is focused on. If you're thinking about doing more 2x2 stuff then please add it here. There are already threads focusing on weapons in general, and also threads focusing on improving combat in general, there are also bows and arrows specifically, and the stuff related to crafting saplings should probably fit into the farmcraft thread. If you're looking at more 2x2 crafting grid recipes, please just add them here.
Otherwise I don't really see any problems, but I still recommend doing some more searches on your topic, and resurrecting something that already exists if it applies to your idea.
he asked me about that so I believe he is wanting the ranged items for his thread >_>
i do prefer if you put the majority of ranged ideas into the current Rangecraft thread (which I am getting around to naming it) and just like them instead of repost them in a new thread :/
I'm not sure if I've said it in this thread before, but I think that craftable tools/weapons should only cover wood and stone items. The idea being that inventory crafting is supposed to be simple crafting, I don't see iron and diamond tools being very simple.
Hopefully some form of a tech tree gets into the game, and more advanced materials require more advanced benches to be crafted into tools. So I don't see why it'd make sense to be able to make, say, an mini-iron pick in your inventory but be unable to make a real-sized one without an anvil or something. There's also a balance issue, I think, that good tools should at least require a stationary surface to work on. Inventory crafting should be for early game and emergencies/screw ups, so metal's not really needed.

Minecraft logic isn't the same as real logic. If diamond and Iron aren't really useful for emergency tools, then that will be its own enforcement, but the recipe itself should still work. Besides, what if you use the workbench to make the handpick? not having the recipe for it would restrict the player from making it at all.
Small shield = most easily crafted defense, the only one that can be done without a workbench, and the only one that can be done with wood instead of needing leather, metal, or diamond.
Hatchet = As stated in the description for the item, its primarily aimed at supporting a system where log blocks could be made to require axes/hatchets to mine them. This would additionally be supported by adding the recipes of "craft saplings to sticks" and "crafts sticks to wood" which would allow the player to gather wood before being able to mine log blocks. The hatchet would be the fastest way to get the ability to mine logs if the player was just starting out, and if the player accidentally ran out of axes while mining trees, the hatchet would be a cheaper option.
Hand Pick = Emergency tool when you happen to only have a couple wood or sticks and some residual cobblestone(or maybe some iron or diamond), but no workbench and not enough wood to make a workbench AND still have wood for making a full Pickaxe. It also means that you can get into the meat of playing minecraft while only relying on the 2x2 crafting grid you start out with and not NEEDING to make the workbench THE VERY ABSOLUTE FIRST THING YOU CRAFT EVERY SINGLE TIME YOU PLAY.
We're on to the last poll everyone. I've added 3 blocks that I've had percolating in the back of my head but just haven't had a chance to do the art until now. After this poll runs, I'm going to look into posting a proper version of this post over at Get Satisfaction. Hopefully I'll have the Aether thread ready to be formatted for Get Satisfaction as well.
You're entitled to an opinion (you did put it in your signature after all) but it's not terribly helpful. It's a banner for crafting recipes, what exactly were you expecting? Is there anything specific that would make it NOT "ugly" ?
I was hoping I had made it short enough that you could stick it in a signature by itself and not have it generate a scroll bar on the side of the signature but apparently that didn't work out. I may see if I can shrink it a bit more and repost it. The width was planned to be set so that you could have the browser window about as narrow as possible and not have any part of it cut off (unless you were cutting off the actual minecraft page itself)

only if all other blocks collapse when you break their supports too. Otherwise that's what an Enchanted Axe would be good for.

And ... err.... How to modify signature? And the banner looks... ugly. Apologies, but it really looks somewhat terrible.
