I really like the ideas for the light arrow, knife, and portable grill. Very good ideas, in my opinion.
As others have said though, your cons for the on-the-go versions of tools don't really outweigh the pros, therefore making their larger counterparts obsolete. I say, none of your damn special abilities, or in other words, being usable as two tools. The only one I say should keep its special ability is the Hatchet, which I think should be able to be used to clear leaves faster. :smile.gif: For all I care, anything else about it can be forgotten.
I also like the ideas for the sling and stone bullets. Not really much to elaborate on.
I don't really understand how the satchels would work though. It sounds like you're implying that when you "put it on the ground," you're dropping it like an item, not placing it as a block. This being the case, how would you open it? I don't know if this would be an easy addition to the game, if even practical. If this were possible, Notch probably already would have made it so that if you break a chest, it still contains its contents. But it doesn't. It ejects them all out.

I actually like that you think they're overpowered, as it balances out those people who think they're underpowered and solidifies my belief that their pros and cons really do balance out.

They are placed like blocks, but not full blocks that can be built on. They're placed like flowers and torches and minecart tracks and redstone dust and ladders. The game will still treat them as taking up a block of space, also, Notch probably didn't include the option for balance purposes as much as for difficulty of coding (actually, I would imagine it would be more work to code the items bursting out)
The "disappearing when out of range" deal is actually pulled from how mobs act when you move out of range. This, and the fact that it can only hold 4 slots helps balance out it's advantages, compared to being able to just pick up a chest without its contents dropping.
I like most of these ideas. What worries me is the satchel mechanics. Although I do agree that inventory space is extremely limited and some more slots definitely wouldn't hurt, I just don't like the proposed satchel idea.
I have another idea that might add-on to this. What it could be that the 2x2 tools are stacked, but limited, kind of like snowballs. Maybe stacks of 4, 3 or some other number. This way, hand tools could be more of a higher-storage tool rather than the 3x3 ones.
Imagine this, you could have a large shovel that you can only carry over your shoulder, and there is a few hand shovels that you can carry easily. That would be the principal used here. It would make sense that way, since a 3x3 is large and cumbersome and use up more space.

Let me suggest some recipes for handheld explosives:
All explosive bags here can be throwed like snowballs, but have shorter range. is cloth or paper (no matter what, you'll get the same thing).
When bomb is thrown, the fuse is ignited and bomb will explode in short amount of time.
Bombs are not stackable.
Gunpowder Bomb.
Explosion is very similar to one from TNT, but 2 times less powerful.
Pro:
[*:j2mc1fyw]Can be thrown
[*:j2mc1fyw]You need only 3 portions of gunpowder to craft it
[*:j2mc1fyw]Can be crafted in 2x2 grid
Con:
[*:j2mc1fyw]Less effective in comparison with TNT.
Shrapnel Bomb.
Explosion deals significant amount of damage to all objects, mobs and players in 3 blocks radius, but does not destroy any blocks.
Pro:
[*:j2mc1fyw]You don't have to worry about damaging you structures.
[*:j2mc1fyw]More uses for splints.
Con:
[*:j2mc1fyw]Should you craft arrows or bombs? You have to decide.
Incendiary Bomb.
( is hell cobblestone)
Explosion turns every air block in 3 blocks radius into fire block. It deals no damage by itself, but sets on fire everything in this area.
Pro:
[*:j2mc1fyw]Fire, fire, fire everywhere!
[*:j2mc1fyw]Enemies on fire become more visible in the dark.
[*:j2mc1fyw]Can be used for entertaiment (fireworks).
Con:
[*:j2mc1fyw]Fire, fire, fire everywhere!
[*:j2mc1fyw]Burning enemies takes time.
[*:j2mc1fyw]You have to go to the Nether.
Flashbang.
( is lightstone dust)
When exploding, it blinds every mob or player in the 7 blocks radius for 5 seconds. No damage is dealt.
Pro:
[*:j2mc1fyw]Blinded enemy is usually defenceless.
[*:j2mc1fyw]Large area of effect - you can blind several targets with one bomb.
[*:j2mc1fyw]Can be useful in PvP
Con:
[*:j2mc1fyw]Effect lasts for 5 seconds only.
[*:j2mc1fyw]No damage is dealt by explosion.
[*:j2mc1fyw]Large area of effect - you can blind yourself as well.
[*:j2mc1fyw]Lightstone is hard to get at the moment.

Most of these are decent ideas, but sounds like they'd do better as actual TNT replacements, with the sand replaced with the other material. Either that or use powder bombs as the base and use modifications of the dynamite recipe.

I don't see a real use for the trowel or the mini hoe but the knife I kind of can, and the mini pick definitely, I mean am I the only one whose ever been mining really far underground, fall into some sort of pit and realize that 1. their last pick is about to break, 2. they don't have a crafting bench with them, and 3. their almost out of torches, and can hear mobs moving around not too far away. I mean that's the only real reason I could see for a mini pick, but that kind of use could save you one day.

1) there is no mini hoe, but both the hand pick and the trowel have hoe functions
2) yes, you've basically got the gist of the use for the hand pick, the trowel is mostly so that people have access to the basic tool functions without needing to know or have the workbench with them already.
3)(not to you specifically, but in general) Why is everyone talking about the weapons and tools now? I've already changed the poll over to the Travel Gear. i was really hoping we'd be discussing that stuff by now.
I'm not sure why, but of all the suggestions in your original topic, the directional markers are the only one that I genuinely dislike.
Perhaps it's the recipe (sticking a flower on the end of a stick doesn't sit right with me). Perhaps it's the thought of how a cave would look stickered with jolly red and yellow arrows pointing everywhere.
I do of course see their usefulness, particularly when coupled with signs, but something about them just screams 'no' to me.
I personally think putting a flower on the end of a stick is a completely believable way to indicate which end of the stick is "pointing"
As for how cave systems will look? Well, that depends on the individual player. if you don't like how they look, don't use them. I still believe they're excellent to have as an option.
Still, thanks for giving the feedback on why you don't like them.
What else we got in this one? Paper recipe yes, as I've mentioned before.
The bow drill is an interesting one. It uses (in total), 4 sticks, 3 string, 1 plank, and then 1 paper per use? So it's a more complex recipe than flint&steel, but a cheaper one. However, I'd say that both string and paper are not particularly common items for the adventurer just starting out. But, they are used differently, so it would even make sense to use the bowdrill later in game (after all, paper and wood are all renewable while flint and iron are not). Overall I think this is fairly balanced. I do have a question as to how using paper fuel in it will work though. Will you have to craft the bowdrill along with a piece of paper:
[] []
and then it will be charged for one use? Or some other method?
No, there's no crafting. Think about the way the regular Bow works with Arrows right now. The Bowdrill works the same way, but instead of using arrows as ammunition to shoot at things, the Bowdrill uses paper as ammunition to start fires. Otherwise there is no "burn duration" it just starts fire the same way that flint and steel does. (not at a distance, I'm just talking about how each use of the bowdrill uses 1 paper, the same way that each use of the bow uses 1 arrow)
Satchels are probably the most controversial suggestion here. You seem to have thought them out fairly well. I'm sure I'd use them if they were introduced, and leather definitely needs more uses. However, if you destroy a placed chest, its contents spill everywhere; I assume this is to avoid having to have stacked chests remember what they each contain etc. Would satchels do this too, meaning they had to be refilled every time you picked one up? Since they don't stack, they wouldn't present the same issues as chests, but there may be other coding considerations I'm overlooking. If these were introduced, I'm sure it wouldn't be long before people were clamouring for some way to mark/identify satchels :biggrin.gif:
The whole point of the satchel, and the reason why they don't stack, is so that you can pick them up WITHOUT spilling their contents. That's also why their storage space is only a scant 4 slots.
How does the GUI for satchels work? From your image, it seems the satchel space would appear permanently above the inventory slots. Is that always there if there is at least one satchel in your inv., or does it only appear when you ... I just realised you can't actually SELECT items in your inventory - clicking them picks them up. So yeah, how does that work, particularly if you have more than one satchel on you?
No, you've completley missed how the satchels function. You can't access their inventory directly at all. You have to put the satchel down each time you want to access it's contents. Once you've placed in on the ground, THEN you can access its inventory the same way you'd access the inventory of a chest. The difference is that you can then pick the satchel back up without its contents spilling. Needing to place the satchel each time you want to access its contents balances out the ability to expand your inventory by carrying a bunch of them.

This is a screenshot of accessing the inventory of a double chest:
The inventory for a satchel is accessed the same as a chest, but since each satchel only has 4 slots to store things in, you don't get the 27-54 slots that a chest or doublechest has.
when you are CARRYING the satchel, you CANNOT access its inventory. You have to place it on the ground first.

um... what? They already use torches.
Are you saying that they shouldn't use torches until after torches have limited lifespans? If so, why should I come up with a different recipe in the meantime?

i dont like the 2x2 tools. it ruines the wood punching part of minecraft. i mean, you still have to use wood to make sticks, but it pretty much eliminates the NEED to build a workbench. it also eliminates the trip up and down your mine, i know it sounds weird, but it actually just makes more sense to me not to have those tools. the shield, slingshot, and everything that isnt a tool like the handpick, is great though

I don't see how it messes up anything about the wood part of the minecraft. I don't see why you SHOULD need to use the workbench. You start out with a 2x2 crafting grid, you should be able to handle basic survival on that alone. The workbench should be for the advanced stuff like Permanent Storage(chests), Smelting, Boats, Minecarts, Ladders, Buckets, and tools and weapons that last longer and work better.
And you can already eliminate the trip up and down the mine simply by carrying a workbench with you. I just think doing that is stupid and the hand tools are a better alternative to that.
