While Flint & Steel is easy to make, having to burn through a piece of iron in order to make one can be a pretty steep price if it's early in the game. As an alternative, the Bow Drill allows you to use sticks, wood, string, and paper to start fires. It takes 4-5 seconds to start a fire, and also requires 1 sheet of paper be used as a type of ammunition for starting each fire, but it's durability is the same as the Bow (which currently is infinite)
How do you mean Paper? There is no paper in the recepie and non of the things in the recepie requests paper!

Just like a bow uses arrows, a bowdrill uses paper.

I once saw a chicken push a creeper off of a cliff. I never looked at chickens the same way ever again. That is of course until I needed feathers.
imageshack is apparently having a minor issues with the specific server that the smaller banner is on. It should be back up by tomorrow, and if not, I'll reupload the image so people can switch to that one.

Wouldn't work. Your feather would end up falling into the bucket. It wouldn't be a quill then, it would just be an ink covered feather.

Arrows aren't part of the recipe for making a bow either, but a bow wont do much unless you have arrows to fire from it. Same thing for the Bow Drill. Each time you want to use the bow drill costs 1 paper, and if you don't have any paper in your inventory, it wont work.
There is only one problem I have with this crafting grid. Many of the 2x2 crafting grid items still require the use of a smelted ore. If you are in a pinch and you don't have an oven, but you have raw materials you are screwed... unless you have a crafting bench on hand. But that defeats the purpose of this, since your justification for making the smaller tools is that ultimately, you need a crafting bench.
If we were able to use the raw materials to craft our item, then this has some real emergency utility. Of coarse, the durability on most of these items would have to be simply terrible in order to discourage their use, but if you absolutely need them, they are there to save you.
I actually have an idea for that, which I had been planning to keep secret.
If a gold or iron ore block is next to a lava spring block, it will have a very low percent chance of dropping the gold/iron ingot instead of the gold/iron ore block. The chance increases with how many sides of the block are touching lava, being surrounded on 5 sides by lava would only BARELY give you the same odds as getting flint from gravel, but with that much lava, you also risk the ore touching the lava and burning. If you don't have ore near lava, you just need to mine the ore, carry it with you to where lava is, and then mine it, and if you don't get the ingot to drop, then you'll just have to place it back there and mine it again, which will take up more uses of the pick you're using to mine it.

I guess you didn't know that you could make wooden mini tools?

Wooden and Stone tools say "hi".
But look at it from another perspective. You're already well off in Minecraft and you've got some smelted ore on your person because you decided to take some when you left your base.
Your main pick has broken, you've fallen into a cave, and because it's been taking up SO much of your inventory you just happened to throw all cobblestone you've picked up into a nearby lava lake earlier.
You have Sticks and Iron on you.
But no planks for a bench.
Why should the recipe for the Hand Pick NOT include Iron, Gold, and Diamond? The situation above could very well happen.
This a completely stupid questions but wheres the download link?

I am endeavoring to remember that you are a miracle, a wondrous human being created in the image of God and that I shouldn't wish for your balls to spontaneously combust.

Ohhhh... there are wooden tools?! I must have totally missed that. /Sarcasm.
First off, I really do like this idea and I am not trying to detract from it in any way. Personally, I think it is one of the most well thought out and intriguing suggestions on these forums. I am simply saying that if you are in a truly desperate situation chances that you would be carrying an ingot are pretty slim for iron hand tools. True, you don't need the iron items if you simply need an escape mechanism, but at any rate, that is the only problem I see with this suggestion. Any way, GreyAcumen at least takes this problem seriously and he/she seems to have an idea to get around it.

I understand your point, however, this situation doesn't make much sense considering that the 2x2 crafting recipe also allows you to turn those sticks in to planks with which you can make a crafting bench, to then turn your iron ingots and sticks in to full mining picks. Unless you are speaking of the highly unlikely scenario where a person might carry around a bunch of iron ingots with only one or two sticks on their person.
But as to your later point, no reason. I never once said that those recipies shouldn't be included. I was simply saying that they might see more use if the player were aloud to use the raw materials, but at a significant cost. Perhaps they just have to mine that last block of diamond but their last iron pick broke. Instead of a long hike back home (or your nearest re-supply chest), you could make a quick hand tool instead that would only really be good for a few uses. Again though, if the OP has an idea to solve this tiney problem then I have 100% support for this. I am already at 98%. I just had a small question about it is all.

The whole time reading that I thought it was a real mod... I am severely disappointed no. Although there are many good ideas here.
This. :'( I was so excited to download this and giggle with joy at having a much improved minecraft...but alas, it will not be so until someone starts modding this. (has anyone actually modded in at least some of these?)
