But its a skill that a basic archer(such as myself) will learn within an hour of practice. We don't have to charge the wing on the pickaxe, you just swing the appropriate amount. Why should you need to skill to pull back on the bow? I think its actually harder to fire a bow half-pulled back than it is to pull it back all the way.
I believe the firing rate should be left alone. This is mine craft not real life... if it was real life it would be sims.
It doesn't NEED to be realistic in order to be fun. He wouldn't have made minecraft if he wanted a realistic game...
that's why there's Giant spiders, bow wielding Skellies, Zombies, And the EVER memorable creeper. (I guess we shouldn't forget slimes but i never seen one so....)
Edit: I do not want to sound rude if I'm coming off that way. Sorry guys and gals.
So? Also last time I checked me driving a car that can go upto 500 mph in a videogame does not translate to IRL skill on driving cars.
It's a videogame
@Vaylen
The issue with that is that you can still shoot at the other mobs attacking you or just time those intervals JUST enough so that it won't matter.
The arrows ALREADY bounce off mobs if you shoot too fast. The arrows that bounce doesn't do damage.
Yeah, but you can still just "spray and pray" and just pick up whatever arrows miss at the end. There's no need for accuracy, and accuracy should always be an issue with ranged weapons.

When driving at 500mph, the game is simplifying it for you. Its a video game, it takes a complex, difficult task and makes it easy and fun. This suggestion takes the easy part of firing a bow and makes it difficult and annoying. Hence the difference. As it is, firing a bow is a fun and simplified version of firing a bow. you don't have to set up the right stance, you don't have to aim down the arrow, you just fire. That is fine. Its fun. All its lacking is a rate of fire limit. The suggestion that you have to manually draw back the bow and fire adds an annoyance, and is forcing the player to micromanage a skill that should be a seamless part of the process.
Hahahahah, that's not real micromanagement at all, even operating 4 stoves to cook 8 slices of meat on each one with one coal for each is much more micromanagement then that. Not all games have to guide you by the hands to give you an awesome expereince.
It's just people like YOU who finds the drawing of the bow annoying, while some wouldn't.
Don't state a personal preference as factual facts.
Okay guys, down! heel! shake! roll over! Play dead!
I suggest that we put a rate of fire cap on the bow. say 1 or two shots a second. Then add a "Power shot" using the unused middle mouse button with the extended draw.
I don't know about other people, but I prefer when my skill actually has an effect on how successful an action is preformed, at least for intuitive tasks.
It's not like people are suggesting that you partake an epic struggle to reach behind your back, select and arrow, nock it in the bow, struggle to pull back the bowstring, have your aim shaking as you struggle to hold the bow steady before finally releasing your shot. Just hold right click to pull back, let go of right click to shoot, holding less than max amount = shorter distance fired. No big deal, people.
Plenty of games implement this simple bow mechanic, and plenty of people can attest that it makes sense and feels right to do it that way.It also helps the immersion as you feel more like you're using a bow instead of a regular gun.
The only reason I can see for not wanting to implement this is if they rely to heavily on being able to use it as a machine gun.
I have hated it every time I have seen it in a game. It does not even resemble using a bow. The reason games that use it have it is to add skill to a game which is generally revolving around it. You generally have to gauge how much power you need to kill an enemy, and you want to use as close to that amount without going under as possible ,to maximize your kill rate. Minecraft would not benefit from that mechanic. Firing a bow at partial strength just results in inefficient use of ammo, not an increased kill rate. When it takes 5 full arrows to kill something, firing faster arrows at half strength is never a beneficial tactic. It just makes consistent accuracy harder.
And if it doesn't directly effect the arrow damage, then you have linked the effective rate of fire to range. If I can drop arrows on the enemies head I can get a much higher rate of fire by barely pulling back instead of having to pull back fully to get max range. There is no good reason a bow should be able to fire faster at a shorter range, yet that is exactly the implication of this mechanic.
Who said anything about damage being less when you hold it less? it just doesn't go as far. You're bringing up some sort of issue with that, but I can't figure out what it is. And I've used a bow, you CAN fire a lot faster if you don't put the effort into drawing the string all the way back, but it doesn't go as far. If you want to try to get close enough to use the tactic of essentially dropping arrows on your enemies, go ahead, but I prefer to shoot at them from further away, like a ranged weapon is intended.
Also, if you have enemies so close to you that you need to fire so fast that your arrows would only be dropping straight down, you really should be switching to a sword.

No, not really. Pulling out the arrow and notching it in the string is the vast majority of the time involved with firing an arrow. The actual draw takes a fraction of a second. Furthermore, trying to fire a half-drawn bow is extremely inaccurate. When its fully drawn, everything lines up and you can get a consistent shot. Aiming occurs after the draw. A half-drawn bow would be extremely difficult to use. No, you don't get any benefit from partially drawing a bow.
I would only be for the bow having a delay if we see the bow notch and draw the arrow back. The only thing I currently don't like about it is it can fire faster than it can damage enemies, but I do like that it is responsive. It's just up to the player to compensate.
