The concept is simple. Rope is a craft of 6 string, (like crafting a door) and each craft of string makes 1 Length of Rope. The longest length of a Rope is 64, obviously.
Using rope is simple: Select your Rope, and right click it to a ceiling block. Once done, a rope will fall from the placed block to either the floor, or until it reaches its max length. A Rope of 64 will end up being 64 blocks long whereas a Rope of 10 will only fall 10 blocks. You can only pick up Rope from the point where it was placed.
Rope, when used, becomes a makeshift ladder system that a player can use when traveling though giant holes in caves. This will allow an explorer to fearlessly dive into cave systems, or allow a player to dig vertical shafts and easily climb to the top, using only one item that can be picked back up from the top. (Having it picked up only at the top is a safety system, so a player doesn't accidentally pick up the rope from the bottom of a deep hole and can't get out. It will prevent a lot of headaches.)
Rope can also be used as a crafting material - maybe generate pulley systems, but mainly for the ultimate Rope upgrade:
Grappling Hook
It's exactly what you think it is: A Hookshot from Legend of Zelda.
A Grappling Hook can be formed by 3 Iron Ingot and a X* length of Rope. The purpose of the Grappling Hook is to make travel across ditches and heights easier and faster by locking onto a Hooking Block from X* blocks away and pulling the player to it. A Hooking Block is crafted with 8 Wood Blocks and a central Cobblestone. This means, you can traverse a section of land, placing these Hooking Blocks as you go, and then your second walk-though can be made easier by using the Grappling Hook to latch from block to block. Another use, would be to connect two mountaintops via a Hooking Block on either side.
Crafting Example: []
[] []
[] []
(replace the stick with Rope)
Another concept, would be to upgrade the Grappling Hook and make it more powerful. Replace the Iron Ingots with Diamond, and you've got a Grappling Hook that can attach itself to any Stone or Dirt block, as if it was a Hooking Block. Then you have the whole world to travel around in.
*I have no idea how long the Grappling Hook would be able to travel. I'm thinking 16 would be a good distance, so make the Rope requirement that distance.
I too was thinking about this and thought this. First I like your string to rope idea. I think that the grappling hook should be crafted on the work bench independantly. Like so...
[] [] []
Which would then be its own thing just the hook but the reason I do it separately is that you could combine it with rope and separate the rope from it as well. But after some usage the hook would finally break. Thus it would have to be replaced.
It would use the same system as the arrows using gravity for it to arc.
So Like with all the other tools, it could be crafted with , , (Silly),
I would think that gravity would be the biggest factor at how high something could be thrown :smile.gif:
I really don't know how minecraft physics work but seeing as I can launch an arrow almost 60 tiles up in the air I'm going to say that's not a good nerf/balancing
How about anything not taller than 10 blocks can be latched onto by the grappling hook?
Ok, i love the idea of having a rope. would make many exporation adventures a bit more interesting.
Here is my take on the rope physics.
Right now i have a similar setup but using water. "why water? what on earth could he mean?" you might be asking yourself.
When you have a water fall, you can sit in it and hold jump to ascend. I have mine shafts with small alcoves every so often to hop out and breath. and a single pit hole at the bottom to prevent the water from flowing elsewhere. so its a single column that i can use to decend and ascend. Either way... Rope can be using these same physics, minus the spreading and minus the drowning. and of course being able to attach it to the bottom of blocks rather then needing to be placed on top of other blocks.
My take on crafting rope is as such.
This makes a rope - ]" title="-<->" /> ]" title="-<->" /> ]" title="-<->" /> ]" title="-<->" /> ]" title="-<->" /> ]" title="-<->" /> ]" title="-<->" /> ]" title="-<->" /> ]" title="-<->" /> ]" title="-<->" /> = the string that spiders drop, or Silk or whatever.
Then you take that rope piece to step two. Reason for this is to provide other uses for the rope item.

This recipe would create a rope with an anchor to stick into blocks.
I also do believe there needs to be a limit on length of rope. I think a 15-20 block maximum length on rope would be just right. so it is anchored and then drops the rope down 15-20 block lengths or until it hits another block.
even that might be a bit too long. but either way, just a rough idea.
In this it shows it can be hung from under a block or on the sides of blocks. and the spot that it is hung from is the anchor point. and then 10 blocks below that is when it stops "flowing" further.
The only spot it should be able to be lifted from is the anchor point (just like water).
I believe this would function well for digging straight drop shafts. hang a rope from the wall or ceiling and start digging right below it.the rope would fall with you as you dig deeper and deeper until it hits max length. at which point you need another rope.
Hope that all makes sense. wanted to put my idea down here.

I really like this and it does make sense. If a way is figured out to include swinging somewhere in the idea, I think I would be in love, :smile.gif:
Oh and it should be noted, waterfall climbing is dangerous, unless you are keeping yourself centered in the waterfall you can fall out to your death, so I would also suggest some means of grabbing on to the rope, which we don't currently seem to have for the ladders either, it rather just seems to slow the miner's fall. Also, latching on/grabbing the rope would hopefully support the notion of swinging or perhaps even rappelling since you could jump away from a surface as you let your self down.
I really want to go zip lining, hooking, climbing, rappelling with all my exploration of the surface and spelunking. Next up, I hope I get to go base jumping and gliding at some point in the Minecraft world as well .. perhaps even ballooning. I wonder if we will get storms with wind and what not... Bah, don't mind me, mind running wild with imagining possibilities rather than limitations... Oh man, then fighting monsters and building structures around those activities!
And make it so that if placed on the top of a cliff, it will 'flow' over the edge. That way I could easily hope off a cliff. Zombies, skeletons, spiders and creepers could not climb them, but a future mob might be able to, maybe goblins or something. Perhaps the recipe for making rope should be the first one suggested, as rope is usually... Forgot the word, but they're usually whatever that word is. Braided, i think.
I was thinking of making simple ropes and melding iron ingots into a grappling hook, then combine the two together to make a grapple that can hang off the side of squares much like torches.. these ropes would then extend down for a certain number of spaces before cutting off.

A grapple shot would function much like a hook shot, but cannot attach to soft surfaces like sand, gravel, leaves, or dirt. The Grapple Shot would only have a certain amount of uses (lets say 10) before breaking. When the Grapple shot is aimed and fired at an attachable surface, you would see a puff of smoke in front of you before suddenly being pulled forward to the target area, where the grapple will soon attach to the wall and a rope will appear down the side of the wall, much like a regular grapple.. like so:

I've got a ton of it, but I can see your point. The three length would work then as awopcxet suggested.
