I understand both sides of this argument. On one hand, creepers have quickly become iconic characters in the game, but at the same time they're an extreme nuisance. While in singleplayer you can simply change the difficulty mode to peaceful in order to avoid the irritation, creepers in multiplayer could quickly become a catastropic troll fest of people leading creepers to other people's bases and blowing them up.
Personally, while I don't think that Creepers should be removed completely from the game, or that their mechanics should necessarily be changed, I do think that maybe how often they spawn and where they show up could be tweaked. Zombies, Spiders, and Skeletons are typical monsters that we see in many games, so it makes sense that they would show up frequently. But consider this: What if creepers were beasts that existed solely down in the cave systems? It would be a nasty surprise, but certainly one that would instill fear into the player and stress the importance of procuring some type of armor before venturing into the depths.
Imagine a player new to the game, digging down deep into his personal world in search of resources. He opens up a pocket into a deep cave. It's dark, but he notices the glint of something shiny in the rock. Could it be gold, iron? Perhaps even diamonds, with any luck? In his excitement he sets up ladders to take himself down to the floor. He dug pretty deep, and was only able to make so many torches because of how little coal he had. He's maybe down to two or three now, but he goes about lighting his way a little bit anyhow.
He sets up the first torch. Diamonds glinting in the rock in front of him. Then, out of nowhere, he hears that awful hissing sound. Turning around, two of the hideous greenish creepers are staring at him, eyes black and their mouths agape. With a final shriek, They suddenly combust, taking out the rocks and the player with them.
Perhaps a melodramatic account of what could happen, but again I think that this would be an element that would immediately show the player, "Oh crap, I didn't know this was coming: Next time I'll have to prepare myself before going down." I think it would add a greater sense of treachery when searching for resources, which could make the game a bit more exciting than it already is.
I've got one world I'm playing which seems to be spawning creepers left and right. Previously, they didn't bother me much- occasionally I'd run into one, but so rarely that I kind of enjoyed it.
But this one world... hoo boy. They spawn all the time. One night three of them lined up outside my house, just waiting for me to come out. I had to dig a side door just to get out. Later on, I got jumped by one while digging some surface coal... and then another, and then another. All the coal got destroyed.
At one point I dug a spiral staircase up to the top of a mountain... and when I dug my way out, a creeper welcomed me at the top by blowing himself up in my face as I removed the last block.
The clincher for me was when I was making my underwater dome- I'd just finished making the top layer of the glass dome, and looked up... and saw a creeper treading water directly above me.
Screw that. Peaceful mode it is.
It seems to me that if you have to switch over to having no monsters just to get stuff done, they might be a bit over the top. I like scary monsters you have to keep an eye out for- I don't like monsters that know where I am even through walls and who seem to spawn constantly.
I'd like a setting somewhere between "tons of creepers" and "no monsters at all".
Creppers in multiplayer is the feature Im looking forward to!
Imagine you are exploring the world and manufacturing your house and whatever and there is nasty creeps trying to kill you. Survival would mean you would need to stay out of trouble and day time risk it by going outside to get wood, food and materials for armor.
It adds dimension to the game and excitement!
And what of the griever that herd creepers into peoples homes?
A griefer would pack it full of dynamite and hide a pressure plate. Creepers would be too likely to explode during herding and may despawn
Creepers are like THE monster of Minecraft; they represent everything evil to a Miner - ruined construction, death, and lost items. This actually makes them a great foe, one of the biggest challenges in the game currently. I believe them asploding underground is waaaay moar evil than at your base; you can usually rebuild, but a creeper asploding a vein of diamonds is just being mean. ;_____;
Any old monster can kill you in any game, but few of them can force you to rethink your strategy so much because every other game has pretty static terrain in the RPG genre. FPS are just now getting heavily into asploding terrain; try camping in the latest Battlefield and see what happens to your delicious cover. :biggrin.gif: I'm looking forward to MOAR mobs that can damage/affect terrain in different ways, like some kind of tunneling beast or such, or even a creature that builds things. It's such an underused concept that's finally getting design love from newer games.
But yes, another source of gunpowder may be in order as well. Maybe a craftable gunpowder! There can never be too many things to craft in this game for me, ever.

Every time I come to these forums, I think more and more that I'm the only person who plays Minecraft normally.
Every time I come to these forums, I think more and more that there is no such thing as playing Minecraft normally.
Minecraft, even at this stage needs a creature that can physically alter the landscape, and the creeper is such a large part of the community that i can see hate threads popping up every day for the next 6 years.
The creeper's design is really cool. Its perplexing facial expression tricks miners into pitying them before luring them into a Hissy demise, where its tiny 4 legs skitter along surfaces.
Most of the fan art for minecraft has the creeper in it:

The hole the Creeper left in the earth is nothing compared to the hole it left in my heart.
And what of the griever that herd creepers into peoples homes?
Personally I'd be impressed, that sounds like a lot more effort than virtually every other way you can possibly do something that can be called "Griefing"
I mean really, how does somebody herd Creepers into somebodies home, especially more than one home, or more than one creeper for that matter. It sounds to me like that is a sure fire way to get yourself asploded. Even if somebody could do it I can't imagine they could pull it off without you noticing, And even if Creeper herding became a huge issue, how is the logical soloution to that nonexistant problem getting rid of creepers? As long as there are any mobs and a way to "Herd" a mob into a house, you can "Grief" by pushing bundles of skeletons in.
And what reason is there to get rid of creepers? Difficulty too high? Lower it! Don't like Mobs? Set to Peaceful!
I don't even understand how this is a real discussion though, Creepers are like the mascot of Minecraft. Also, they're one of the most unique enemies in the game. I doubt they would be removed from the game even if that idea recieved a lot of support though, Notch has stated that in regards to game difficulty he would rather err on the side of harder rather than easier. Although even then, It's not like they're that powerful unless you're ambushed, then it's probably your fault (You want difficult, try skeleton riding a spider, those guys are hardcore). Don't forget we're talking Creepers here, probably the most recognizable thing about minecraft. Seriously.
Remember, all of the expeience of playing minecraft can be summed up in this one video:
Sometimes you die, that's just a part of playing video games, it'd be no fun if there were no challenge.
But even then( and I'm going to say this one more time):
You can always set your difficulty to peaceful if don't want to deal with mobs.
Hell, I'll fully give up this argument if somebody can come up with Three (3) logical, legitimate arguments that require the creeper to be changed or removed and cannot be solved by switching to peaceful difficulty.
Normally my posts are better organized than this but I just can't believe this post is even nessecary
Seriously I thought this was a joke thread when I first saw it.

Make your server private then, I don't see why anyone wouldn't.
Creepers are the iconic figure of minecraft. Much like bio-shock. In bioshock Was the main character the center of the box art? no it was the big daddy. Creepers are minecrafts big daddies.

Muncher is right, listen to him, he can cure the blind and make paraplegics walk.
I absolutely love the creeper for the reasons that he makes you bat out of your home into an open area (just in case he landed on your roof), scanning the horizon for any creepers, and if a creeper ever explodes, he creates holes in your map, giving you stuff to do besides digging, and altering the terrain. He's a good challenge, and I love challenges.
At most, I don't like that the range of the explosion is almost so big that you could get randomly insta-killed even if you try to avoid him - maybe the damage should depend more on the distance from it, like taking only 5 hearts of damage instead of 9 1/2 hearts. (Note that I haven't had much experience with creeper explosions in-game - this is just by watching LPs, and the people I watch could generally suck at fighting/avoiding creepers.)
You do take less damage further away from him. I've managed to jump far enough away that I took only a few hearts of damage (that was with armor on, but it wouldn't have killed me regardless).
don't fences stop creepers? in my single player i have a 5-10 block radius fence around my main home with torches. iv only seen a creeper get close once, inside, and the only thing i can think i did was leave the door open, that or he spawned inside.
And what of the griever that herd creepers into peoples homes?

turns the game from just a grindy type game to Lego Survival Horror. All other monsters you get fair warning about because they're loud, Creepers are scarier than the Pyrimid Head in SH2.
The creeper isn't even remotely scary, and adds f-all to the survival horror aspect of the game. Skeletal archer is pretty much the only one that can give somebody a start. The zombie has nice creepy ambience, but no start. The creeper just looks hideously stupid and poorly designed and is incredibly irritating. It would be fine if an exploding creature spawned once in a blue moon, but to have them wandering around constantly makes for some annoying gameplay, and tedious clean up of level design if you're not paying attention, which is fine and all, but when the survival servers go up and you've got tons of people running around, the creeper is going to turn levels into buckshot swiss cheese that nobody is going to bother to clean up. There are plenty of other great possibilities for enemies, this one is retarded and needs to be put down, despite some people's irrational sentimentality over them.
Creepers are pretty much the "face" of Minecraft. Removing them would take a chunk out of the unique MC experience.
There are so many good ideas that could be implemented into this game, it would be so sad to see people commit to such a bad one out of the cheap novelty of its awful design.
You must be really careless/awful at swordfighting if you have that many craters to clean up. The only craters which I really bothered with were ones sapping my house.
I actually have never had a creeper meets house accident, which sucks, I want to know their true power.
